Brewster beaten in thriller

Post by boxerrob2005 »

Just watched the fight live and its got to be a contender for fight of the year. lykavich was floored in the 7th but he nailed brewster in the 9th and brewster showed tremondous heart to survive that round. lykavich was the better boxer and his speed won him the fight, but there was loads of wild exchanges and both looked vulnerable. Lykavich certainly has a good chance of beating rahman or byrd if he fights like that again. good fights for the heavyweight divison.

Liyakhovich wouldn't beat Byrd, but he would have a decent chance against Rahman.

Liyakhovich is susceptible to body punches and Lamon's only real attack to Liyakhovich's body resulted in a knockdown. However, Lamon's stupidity was that he didn't mount another body attack, Lamon was just head-hunting like a thick tw@t :D

It was a good fight but I don't particularly rate Liyakhovich. Brewster has no skill whatsoever and only relies on his power, that's why Liyakhovich looked pretty good.

I didn't see the fight, but for those who did... any thoughts on Brewster's performance in relation to his fat gut?

Lets just say his gut looked HUGE during his post fight interview. He was in very poor shape.

It's funny cos I was reading a book bout Ali and someone in the book mentioned that Ali came along at a period where heavyweight boxing had begun to stagnate, where heavyweights had decided to go for power and bulk, thus abandoning flair (as such). Then even after Ali's period had passed it was down to the likes of huge punchers like Tyson to take the limelight - but a bit like male tennis, has the whole (size/power) thing actually had a negative effect in the longrun? I.e. it is just plain dull. My question is a rhetoric, I know, but still an interesting point I think.

This could very well mean that within a few months we will have 4 heavyweight champions from the former Soviet. Now I have no doubt that americans will call this the worst period in heavyweight history, deserved or not.

Nice one - meant to post that you could get 5 to 1 on Lyakhovich to win at Skybet (higher than the 7 to 2 on most bookies.)

Stuck £50 on and £30 on the over 8.5 rounds.

DOn't know why I didn't put on Lyackovich points as I thought this ws likely.

Sorry to be 'wise' after event - but after seeing Lamon's gut and thinking about how he has struggled sometimes it was a good bet at 5 to 1.

Deserved but also a sign of the future... in 10 years time I expect the higher divisions to be dominated by fighters from the Eastern block and the next great Heavyweight when he finally arrives will be Russian... :box: :box: :box:

I wonder when a) a Chinese explosion will hit professional boxing and b) when the first decent heavyweight will come out of Japan. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Japanese people are getting bigger (on average) and that some of the 'blame' for this was the increasing availability of western fast food against traditional Japanese cuisine (ie more 'protein').

Well Nigerian Peter Okhello was Japanese Heavyweight champion last time i checked so maybe not an explosion due just yet. The Eastern Block has some good fighters coming through, Ruslan Chagaev, Denis Boytsov, Alexander Dimitrenko and Alexander Povetkin looks class as well. Not forgetting the Beast :TU:

The Eastern Bloc boxing explosion was always going
to happen, heavyweight boxing is going to get better
in the next 20-30 years in my opinion. Another avenue
that is ready to open is when Castro dies/ Cuban goverment
overthrown and thats when Miami will become a major boxing
centre.

That and the rest of the world is getting bigger. Look out for
Argentine heavyweight Ivan Carlos Protti, like Skelton comes
from a MMA tae kwon do/background and is big and with fast
hands.

There are more big latino heavyweights than ever before
fighting in the states. The heavyweight divsion is going to be
a kalediscope of colour in the next 20-30 years... can't wait :TU:

I just hope they start brining in some excitement.... Its great to see the European countries really competing now (not just talking heavyweights but in general) BUT, there isn't ONE fighter from the Eastern Block or even from mainland Europe who I go "god, I've really got to see him".

Loads whose skill I respect, but no one who I can go - who I get a Tyson esque buzz about.

Wladimir is the only active fighter, who I get a bit of a buzz about from the Eastern Block, but thats only becuase he is vulnerable.... Before his chin got exposed he was boring to watch.

I lay all the blame on the glorified fencing that is Amateur boxing these days.

if you check the international forum at boxrec, you will find that many of us were calling it the lowest ebb in HW history SEVERAL YEARS AGO!! john ruiz sounded the alarm bell long before his equally mediocre east euro heirs apparent like valuev, liahkovich & wlad ascended...in fact it was china chin wlad that brewster won his wbo title from!!

and dont get too excited that this heralds some glorious new era of real life ivan dragos...unless denis boytsov turns out to be sonmething REALLY special, expect the HWs to continue dwelling in the mire of mediocrity, regardless of what country the new stars come from!!

sounds like a slavic superiority complex to me!!!

or more likely, just a severe case of wishful thinking brought on by too many viewings of whatever rocky movie featured ivan drago!!

only confirmation that ivan drago was just as much of a product of hollywood fantasy as the cartoonishly unrealistic character of rocky balboa!!!

Watched the fight last night, absolutely superb! It was good quality too, not just two low quality or out-of-shape guys slugging it out... There was great hand speed on display, technique, good chins, a thrilling fight.

Hard to tell how Liyakhovich would fare against other world class opposition as this was the first time I've seen him and it could have been a case of an out of shape Brewster making him look good, who knows?

My instinct from watching him last night is that he would do ok against the other top Heavyweights if he sticks to what's he's good at...

That lead right hand to the body was a strange shot to consistently throw but it worked on Brewster.
