The PPV event that won't be equaled
The PPV event that won't be equaled
Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier held on March 8, 1971 was witnessed live via PPV to 300 million ticket buyers in theaters around the world.
Re: The PPV event that won't be equaled
How much money was made.
300 million tickets buyers around the world. You talk nonsense.
Most countrys in the world are poor, a lot dont have money for enough food and u want to tellme that 300million people bought tickets for a fight.
This 300million is a joke number. Like when some say elvis sold more than 1 billion albums but nobody can truly math the numbers cause of all the copied album films etc..

If 300 million paid to view and both participants only made 2.5 million bucks each. They were the worst businessmen in history.actjac wrote:http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/hea ... -1.2980524

In those days that purse was the largest sports or entertainment payout in history to any individual. . . The promoter however became a billionaire.

No joke. . . 300 million paid viewers in theaters around the world at a time before cable television. This is a PPV record that will never be equaled. For anyone who says Mayweather-McGregor will set the all the PPV viewer record is lying.FastestHandsInThewest wrote:This is a joke right?

I'm not sure why anyone would question that 10% of the world paid to watch the fight closed circuit.

Re: The PPV event that won't be equaled
The Ali-Frazier fight was unprecedented: Two unbeaten heavyweight champions squaring off. Making more money for a single performance than any athlete in history, an outrageous $2.5 million each. Drawing a record-setting Garden crowd of 20,455 and a record-setting worldwide closed-circuit TV audience of 300 million.
For those who struggle to read, the above is taken from an early paragraph in the NY daily news article that was linked to.

It's quoted on a few websites, seems reasonable to me. What did it cost to get into theatres in those days?

Re: The PPV event that won't be equaled
I was 2 years old, I think the Holmes/Weaver and Duran/palomino was my first closed circuit but it was at the Baltimore Arena, not theaters. I'm going to say $20. I don't know the world could satisfy 300 million people in cinemas. It was definitely the biggest fight ever, but 10% of the planet? No way.Tomasino wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Oh, I don't believe that figure.Tomasino wrote:

Re: The PPV event that won't be equaled
It seems some articles are taking the 300,000,000 estimated total viewers as PPV numbers. Like you say it's unlikely there were theatre seats to hold a third of that numberSaadOffTheDeck wrote:I was 2 years old, I think the Holmes/Weaver and Duran/palomino was my first closed circuit but it was at the Baltimore Arena, not theaters.
