Is Floyd already washed up?
Is Floyd already washed up?
Or it was just on the purpose to make Connor look better? Did he wanted make a "drama" fight instead of one sided BS or is he realy so bad now?
Where was his counter punching and defence?

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I don't know if I'd say washed up, but he's certainly past his best. He won't be fighting anymore in all likelihood.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I think we seen one of the reasons why Floyd ducked rangey fighters like Williams and Lara.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Williams fought like he was 5'6". It was mainly his non-stop punching that made him a handful...
Lara would've been one of the tougher matches for Floyd though.

Floyd faced 2 fighters* his entire career with a longer reach: ODLH and McGregor*.
A Lara type of fighter could have negated his pot-shot tactics.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Williams typically didn't use his reach though. He was a punching machine who would walk straight up to guys and then start working inside, which he had the stamina to maintain nearly all fight. He could also keep the punches flowing from odd angles. His physical dimensions make it seem like he should've been a major problem on the outside, but that just wasn't his game. I do think he could've troubled Floyd, but not because of his height and reach as utilized from range.
Carlos Quintana, Lara, and even Cintron outboxed him on the outside

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Washed up? Not really he's not at Roy Jones shot level. The last true Floyd fight we saw was vs Pacquaio and he was pretty sharp, though that was 2 years ago
The mcgregor fight, with respect is no fight to judge Floyd. He was so many levels above mcgregor that he could literally do as he pleased, abandon most fundamentals and just walk forward and land around 60% vs a guy with no defence and chin asking to be tagged. When does Mayweather ever casually keep walking forward vs anyone!? If Mayweather fought like that vs mosely, cotto or oscar he'd get wrecked
There's some truth in option one that he carried mcgregor imo

This. Criminal from williams that he didn't use his incredible rangecrusader wrote:Williams typically didn't use his reach though. Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I think Berto was a good choice for his last proper fight.
Safe bet to keep the perfect record. Shot is a harsh comment though, I would prefer easing into retirement.

Already??!! 40 years old and 50 fights...... jeez, tough crowd.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Yes
It was sad to see McGregor having any successes and hitting him at will in the first couple of rounds.
Errol Spence would have chewed Mayweather up based on that performance.

"Already washed up"?????
He is 40 years old and semi-retired for years. A typical boxer is washed up way before he turns 40.
He would probably still beat everyone in his division. Except for B-Hop there is hardly any boxer who aged better than Floyd.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Considering that his fight with Berto was a lot more competitive than expected, and now McGregor landed on him a lot more than expected, I suspect that he is genuinely on the decline now.

Since Floyd says he is, since he's never going to fight again. Yes, he's seen better days. Past the foolish question, the "already" is bizarre.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
He is definitely past it but he would be still one of the top (probably top 5 or 10, not the best) fighters in his weight category at the moment, in McGregor fight it was like 50% of FMJ actual possibilities though.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Floyd isn't "washed-up" per se, but he is past-his-prime.
I personally don't believe that Mayweather gave 100% during his training camp, because he was returning to the ring for purely financial reasons rather than driven by sporting goals.
I also think he didn't perceive McGregor as a genuine threat... and let's face it, none of the hard-core boxing fraternity gave the Irishman a chance.
During the first three rounds of the bout, Floyd adopted the 'rope a dope' tactic, to make Conor waste his stamina and to also solve the puzzle.
When he realised that Conor couldn't punch and had an extremely porous defence, he treated McGregor's shots with contempt, by abandoning his own shoulder roll defensive technique, in preference to using a 'peek-a-boo' guard whilst walking his opponent down, which isn't Floyd's style.
I also feel that Floyd was capable of closing the show much earlier than he did, but I think he was having fun and he also wanted some form of redemption from the criticism he received for the disappointing Pacquiao bout, so he tried to entertain the fans.
I think if Mayweather had returned against better opposition, then he would trained much harder and resorted to type, by returning to his defensive stylistic comfort zone.
Do I think Floyd beats the likes of Thurman and Spence Jr. right now? I personally have my doubts, but even so, there really isn't any evidence that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mayweather Jr. is "washed-up".

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Badou Jack was the best fighter on the card. That should tell the story to anyone confused.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I don't think this Floyd Mayweather could live with someone like Terrance Crawford now so yes. He's just put a cherry on top of his career, he won't be back if he has any sense.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Floyd is lucky he wasnt fighting a legit contender. He would have got whupped!!
Azumah Nelson got old suddenly, from one fight to the next. Floyd lost it some time in the last 2 years. He was already badly faded when he faced Berto and clearly has lost even more since then.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Floyd already address this himself. "I'm not the fighter I was even 2 years ago" But he knew even if he is washed up, he could still beat up McGregor which he did.

If he fought anyone else on Saturday night, like Terrence Crawford or GGG... He'd of been embarrassed, let's be honest here. Possibly stopped. He's not the world's best anymore.

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
Honestly what fighter was peak at 40 years old and having 50 fights?
It's expected for him to be a fraction of the fighter he was.
It's expected for him to be a fraction of the fighter he was.
Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I wouldn't mind being 'washed up' with half a billion or more in the bank. To answer the question, no athlete can consider their best years to be ahead of them at 40...

Re: Is Floyd already washed up?
I know he's older, but please.
He wasn't really trying to win every round like he normally does.
Thurman barely beat Garcia, and that was more on Garcia IMO.
Thurman looked more athletic, but Garcia was the better boxer.
Crawford has to worry about the power of a 130 pounder.
One good Floyd round, and there's no telling how he'd react.
Spence Jr is a monster, but if he tried to walk Floyd down like Brook, he'd end up looking like Corrales.
So he would have to outbox a moving Floyd.
What's most important is that the Floyd who beat Hatton would beat 2017 Floyd 12-0.
That's enough of a decline to personally know you need to hang it up.
Mentally, it could come into play if he were still fighting the best.
