Should points have been taken off McGregor?

Post by Ade L »

Not that it would have made any difference, but should points have been taken off McGregor for the hammer blows / rabbit punches etc?

No, points should have been taken off Floyd for turning his back, as always.

Has Mayweather ever had a point deduction in his career? I don't think i've ever seen a fighter get away with so much shitt without even as much as a warning.

I believe he had a point deducted in the first Castillo fight for pushing.

Conor was hammer fisting continuously though. The way Conor ended up behind Floyd seemed like it was Floyd's fault. But it was both. Floyd woud cover up, crouch low and turn as Conor was cutting to the side. Then Conor was happy to take the Alpha position and grab Floyd as if he was ready to mate.

There are five people who would have deserved point deductions for various reasons:

1. The kind of person that bets on McGregor with a 5/2 betting line.
2. Kellerman for bloating that Conor will land 0 punches.
3. The referee for being biased even before the bell. Have you ever seen a ref only talking to one boxer during the pre-fight rule-speech???
4. Floyd for provoking a DQ by constantly turning his back to McGregor to entice illegal punches.
5. McGregor for doing the most damage with over-zealous hammerfists in the clinch.

So yeah, McGregor (amongst others) should have had points deducted.
Before anyone trashes him for those punches (with the inside of the glove and aforementioned hammerfists), imagine how hard it must have been for him to permanently keep his fighting instincts in check, by limiting his arsenal to the small number of allowed techniques in boxing.
Of course muscle memory kicks in once in a while and you fight like you always do. He had to drop kicks, grappling, takedowns, submission holds from his arsenal AND half a dozen punching techniques (incl. elbows).

I was surprised how well he was able to keep his muscle memory in check for the most part. He adapted really well after committing some illegal punches early.

PS: I'm surprised that this fight still garners so much interest for all the trashing that's being done on this board. Did you guys enjoy the fight afterall?

PPS: If Holyfield isn't DQ'ed in half of his fights, then not even Golota deserves point deductions. Recently rewatched the two Holyfield-Tyson fights and I gained a new-found appreciation for the ear-biting.

Considering the judges had it so damn wide in favor of Floyd, what would have been the point? 8-1 scores were ridiculous. It was either 5-4 or 6-3 or 5-3-1 for Floyd.

Plus, Floyd would have obviously handily won round 10, 11 and 12. Probably with 10-8 or worse had the fight continued and McGregor somehow survived.

If the Irishman didn't have stamina issues, the fight would have become a wildly sloppy and entertaining contest indeed.

There were quite a lot of moments where points should have been taken of, also from Mayweather with his after the bell punch.

I wonder why they didn't go for a Montell Griffin - RJJ setup. Have Floyd DQ'ed for a late-blow and then cash in on a rematch.

After the bell punch?

Do you mean when Mayweather pushed McGregor in the chest?

Yea, whatever it was, I would have screamed loud one point deduction for Mayweather straight away at that moment if I was the ref.

I like the way Robert Byrd handled it...he just gave Floyd an even harder push.

Great post.

it's hard to say exactly how and when someone should get penalized in boxing.
The Holyfield example is excellent, but he has fans who love him, so ...
I thought a Hatton mugged Tyszu, but most disagree.
I thought Amir Khan was rightfully deducted against Peterson because excessive pushing is the same as excessive holding.
But many disagree.

Tyson delivered the most egregious headbutt in the first fight.

Holyfield was a true master of the dark side of boxing. I mean this in a non derogatory way. Simply put, he had the old school ways, it was dirty boxing but too smart to get DQ'd or the refs to have him for it.

I love tyson over Holyfield, but tyson was no way smart enough to box that way, or "out foul" Holyfield. His temperament and ring smarts were way too hot and if he were too foul, it'd be blatant. His career showed this.

Yes cos as I said, Tyson isn't smart enough. Call it dirty, or old school, or whatever you like, Holyfield had it and was smart with it
