Adamek possibly fights UFC fighter Jan Blachowicz, is it gonna be a trend now?

Post by dagilechia »

Mayweather vs McGregor, Andre Berto wants to fight in UFC, Adamek vs Blachowicz in boxing, there are probably rumours about at least dozens of fights between boxer and mma fighter in both boxing and mma. Is it gonna be a trend now that boxers/mma fighter will move to another sport for one-two fights or even try to continue their careers in both sports at one time?

ESPN thinks because of the big bucks it will be a trend and I think they may be onto something...

Mayweather-McGregor happened because there was too much money involved for it not to happen, and the truth is there's too much money on the table for other crossover fights not to happen in the future. It's like having a blockbuster summer action film that's a major box office success. It's not going to win any awards, but it's going to make a ton of money, and chances are sequels and copycat films aren't far behind.
Of the 5 potential matchups the article mentions, here's the one I'd like to see:
Anthony Joshua vs. Stipe Miocic

The impact of the success Mayweather-McGregor had is unmistakable. Many boxers and mixed martial artists are now trying to figure out which crossover fight they could possibly book that would land them a big payday and crossover appeal. UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has already called his shot and publicly challenged Anthony Joshua, the unified heavyweight champion in boxing, on social media.

Miocic has challenged Joshua on Instagram and Twitter and discussed on TMZ why he wants to step into the ring with Joshua.

. @anthonyfjoshua "This guy" is the universally recognized as the baddest man on the planet. You aren't even the baddest man in the UK.

- Stipe Miocic (@stipemiocicufc) June 19, 2017

Heavyweight fights aren't what they used to be, but this would be a unique crossover fight because you would be getting the current undisputed heavyweight champions from boxing and MMA in the ring, whereas with many of these other matches one side is either retired or past his prime.

Yes, Stipe Miocic had a fairly impressive amateur boxing career by MMA fighter's standards. He was actually the Cleveland Golden Gloves heavyweight champion & a regional champ as well going to the nationals. But, going to the nationals several years ago & winning the Olympic gold medal are worlds apart. As is winning the UFC heavyweight title to winning the heavyweight boxing world championship.
Believe me, Anthony Joshua wouldn't have to wait until the 10th round to get rid of Stipe Miocic. I can pretty much guarantee that Miocic wouldn't make it out of the first round with him. He fights much too squared up to last any longer than that & while Miocic is a big hitter in MMA, we saw this past Saturday night that big power in MMA punching doesn't necessarily translate into punching power in boxing. As strong of a man as is Miocic, without his ground & pound to work with, I don't believe that Joshua would have anything to worry about in the boxing ring.

It is interesting what has happened with these two sports. Originally, MMA was about matching fighters who were masters of one discipline. MMA later evolved into the fighters knowing a variety of disciplines. Now, it's going back to what it was in a way because the MMA fighters are going to have to master just one form of fighting which is boxing if they want to be competitive against boxers in the ring. When there is money to be made, it's going to happen. With boxing vs. MMA fighters, you are getting the fans from both sports. That's why it will make money.

Eventually the guy crossing to the other sport has to actually win one of these novelty fights or the public interest and the money that comes with it will dry up.
Doing better than expected but still losing won't sell for long.

You're right, but I believe that it will happen eventually. The MMA fighters will hire boxing trainers. They will improve. Remember when basketball pros from the NBA dominated the Olympics for America? The rest of the world also has NBA players now and the games are much more competitive. There will be an evolution just like when MMA evolved to what it is today.

Easy money, Tyrone Spong won all of his mma matches and all of his boxing matches, but these guys probably don't dare to fight him.

Boxing is ineffective in MMA. The stance doesn't work.

So do you think these guys went into MMA in the first place because they don't like money and wanted as little of it as possible?

Or do you think that the vast majority of those who can box, do?

I haven't heard he had a sambo background anywhere, but it takes more than brief training in something to do well at the highest level of a sport.

Maybe they prefer MMA over boxing. The female boxers are trying to make the transition to MMA because there is more money. That is not the case with the men, but maybe there will be more money in MMA in the future. The stance is different obviously. They cannot have the same stance that they do in MMA for boxing. Their boxing ability is going to vary. It depends on what they initially learned. If someone begins as a high school and college wrestler, then they will have to learn other disciplines. Mayweather vs. McGregor was just one fight. When there are a few more of these crossover fights, then we will see if it is the same results or are the fights going to be more competitive and go the distance. Of course, it will depend on the matchups. I don't think there will be many boxers trying MMA, so I think it will be MMA fighters fighting boxers in boxing.

Loads of very talented athletes start out doing wrestling, judo, sambo, etc. as kids and have grappling ingrained as their background, which obviously makes them better suited to MMA. It's also possible to enjoy doing other forms of combat more than one enjoys boxing.

The idea that someone would've been a boxer if they were good enough to cut it there at a high level is weak IMO

The point is that by the time they are a big name MMA fighter, unless they have done a lot of boxing training (and I mean one hell of a lot), it is way too late.

And if they had done a lot of boxing training they would know they were a good boxer and have gone that way instead of into MMA.

I agree that AJ would be a clear favorite, but if Miocic is as much of a no-hoper as you seem to think, then AJ would be foolish to pass up the huge payday a crossover match with Stipe could bring, especially in Vegas, which is where Joshua has repeatedly said he wants to fight!!
