Cool. Do you know why the fight was stalled then? Ali next fought Larry Holmes instead on October 2, 1980. How did your dad's big shot at Ali slip away?

Thanks. :P

Cooney and Mercado should have matched up, 12 rounds, around 1980/1981.

I have not seen the belt, but I will certainly look out for it. Rotterdam, city of lost boxing belts.

So you're smart and charming.

Who in the hell would make up a story like that? She's more interesting than anything that came form you.

I rememember watching with my Dad,the Mercado vrs Earnie Shavers fight live back when the networks use to show fights.
That was a good one,Shavers knocked Mercado down, and whenever that usually happens the opponent is soon out of there,But Mercado got up,Shavers ripped his glove on Mercado's teeth,Mercado weathered the storm then TKO's Shavers.
Brutu, I saw Bernardo Mercado fight Horace "Big City" Robinson on a late Friday night fight card on CBS in February of 1978.
Then, the next time that I saw him was the Shavers fight & then the Spinks fight. His loss to "Tex" Cobb wasn't televised live but if my memory serves me correctly ABC did show some highlights of it during their pre-fight build up for Cobb's challenge of Holmes in November of '82. And, unfortunately, that's it as far as his fights are concerned. He may have been on television before the Robinson fight ( whom he also beat in a six rounder earlier in his career ) but I didn't see them.

As can be seen in my separate thread here, I'm attempting to gather some information about Mr. Mercado's bouts with John Tate & Mike Weaver. They were important bouts as they derailed what was to be a certain opportunity for him at the WBC title. I know the results of those fights, of course, but I don't know any details. Apparently, they weren't filmed & the boxing magazines of the day didn't go into detail about either fight. They just provided the results.
Can anyone provide details of them?

I think it was mentioned that the Mercado vrs Berbick fight was broadcast on CBC radio live.
and if they did that they probably video-taped it too for delayed broadcast the following week.

Reviving this old thread. I heard that Bernardo Mercado has passed away, my condolences to his family. I remember reading about him a lot in the American boxing magazines I used to buy when I was in school here in Australia. He was one of my favourites, so when I heard he was fighting Jimmy Thunder in my hometown of Melbourne in 1989, I had to go to the fight. I was happy to actually see Mercado fight live in person, but unfortunately he was knocked out in the first round (his last fight). I hope he had a happy retirement and that his family are well.

Mercado once knocked out Trevor Berbick (who went on to win a version of the Heavywight title some years later) in 1 round. Berbick said afterwards..."I proved I could take his best shot" :salut:
