Re: Hagler Hearns full fight
Hagler had a chin of stone, hands of dynamite and mental toughness like no othersockdollanger wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYHSHd1x ... s%20hearns
Hagler is a freakin monster!
I watched the fight the other day and just thought "F**K" Hagler is awesome!".
So can anyone enlighten me, because I was only young at the time, did Hagler and Hearns not like each other? I mean Hagler just went in there and walked forward trying to knock Hearns head off. Two great fighters just wanting to kille each other. Its just one of the best 3 rounds I've seen. Hagler is just a legend its like he said "I don't care what you throw at me I'm just going to keep coming forward until I get you".
GREAT!

there was no real hate btwn the 2 but durring the lead up to the fight Hagler was very quiet and Hearns was not. Since neither man is a true trash talker Hearns took the role of "bad guy" to try to hype the fight. Needles to say Hagler didnt take kindly to this sort of disrespect and both men tried to end it early. Tommy slowed down just a bit in the 2nd round because Haglers head broke his hand!
The build up had me hooked. After Hearns blew out Duran it seemed he could KO anybody. The reach difference was brought up becasue I think it was the first time Hagler fought someone with a bigger reach. There was a lot of bad blood and each had a nickname for the other I think it was "midget" and "freak" or something like that.Arsenal wrote:I watched the fight the other day and just thought "F**K" Hagler is awesome!".

Hagler was sick of not getting his due and was just off possibly a prime performance against Hamsho.
I do think that a lot of people watch this figth, Mugabi and Leonard and have the wrong perception of what Hagler was about.
I have that fight on DVD, and make it a point to watch it on Sunday mornings. Just the most exciting 8 minutes this side of UConn/George Mason. Anyone who watched the last 6 minutes and the overtime will agree that was some of the best basketball in the past 10 years.
Honest to God, the fight was perfect. Easily the best 3 round fight in boxing history.

AUUUGH! Im originaly from South East CT, Bad Bad weekend I had last weekend! I was rooting for George Mason against FLA, but then again, who wasnt?
My first ever copy of The Ring had them back to back on the cover. I must have read it 50 times cover to cover until the next issue was out.Arsenal wrote:Thats why I asked the question because Hagler just went for him. It just wasn't like Hgaler to go in there and just take shots like he did and marrh forward till he got him. Hagler does have very long arms for his height doesn't he?
But what a fight!
Tommy's right hand at the start was the hardest punch I've ever seen that didn't drop the guy recieving it.
The only downer of the whole fight is the KD which puts Tommy out. You'd expect like a disasterous KO, something that a guy gets his head snapped back to his shoulder blades, but Tommy kind of leaned on Hags then fell. However, the 7:58 seconds before that leave little to cry about.Ezzard wrote:My first ever copy of The Ring had them back to back on the cover. No doubt about it, Hearns was done. I wish I could locate the punch stats for that fight..Arsenal wrote:Hagler took shots that would have flattened most boxers. He took one absolutely flush and didn't even blink. Yeah the KO was funny. Hagler hits in on the temple Hearns does an Ali shufflebut then watch the right hand Hagler hits him with. I think Hearns eyes close and its goodnight Vienna!
Has to be up there for thrown and landed.

The almost stopped the fight in the 3rd due to the cut. Had Hearns hung on another couple of rounds he would have won by TKO.Arsenal wrote:I think Hagler would have caught him sooner or later. He took the best Hearns threw when he was fresh and powerful. As Hearns tired Hagler would have got him. Was the Hagler cut in the first rd bad? It looked it.

Even when you look back at the fight its still great, just think: arguably the best fighters in their era, bell rings WOW! I think its amazing that Hagler ate Hearns right hands and kept coming, this in my mind put Hagler as #1 pound for pound in the 80's.

I dont think the cut was in a bad enough place to make the doctor or ref end it.pundit wrote:Hagler had no choice after the cut. He had to KO Hearns quickly or would have lost by TKO himself. And he delivered.Arsenal wrote:Hagler was amazing. He just went in there and said "f**k you and what you have I'm going to just walk straight through everything and KO you!".
It was a good cut, don't get that twisted, but no way bad enough to stop the fight at that point. I just think Hagler realized that may become an issue later on, and just said fornicate it and went for the win then and there.
It's funny that everyone is talking about Tommy hitting Hags at will, but not realizing that Hagler was hitting Tommy just as much, maybe slightly less. But it's not like Hags was just getting lambasted in 1 and 2. I still giggle everytime I see Marvin get hit with that first shot, and just keep coming like he was Kimbo Slice....that's right, I got a Kimbo Slice reference in there.

Nothing personal as far as Hearns was concerned - the worst he came up with before the fight was after the Duran KO "Marvin must be shaking like a leaf on a tree!"...said half joking too.Arsenal wrote:I watched the fight the other day and just thought "F**K" Hagler is awesome!".

But Hagler, well he just about hated anyone who dared step in a ring with him - at least that's the way he was once he won the title.
I remember the very friendly Tony Sibson trying to shake Marvin's hand at a press conf before their fight, and wish him the best, and Marv looked at him like he'd just threatened to wipe out his family.
With Hagler, it was ALWAYS personal.
One of the greatest first rounds ever ( check out Arguello/Pryor too - first round, first fight - just as brilliant ) but after Hagler took those first rounds bombs of Hearns, you just knew the fight was over for TH from that point on.
It was totally a game of cat and mouse, and Hearns had to hit him with the best he could on that first big right, and you saw Hagler just walk through it almost. I can't tell you how many people would've been dropped by that, but Hagler wasn't even stunned, it was like a jab to him.MightyWarrior wrote:Nothing personal as far as Hearns was concerned - the worst he came up with before the fight was after the Duran KO "Marvin must be shaking like a leaf on a tree!"...said half joking too.Arsenal wrote:I watched the fight the other day and just thought "F**K" Hagler is awesome!".

It's no wonder Hags only went down 1 time in his career.
