Crawford-Indongo titles

Post by Pigeons »

The WBA title listed under Crawford-Indongo is the "super" title, but it should be the "regular" world title. The same "regular" world title Indongo won vs. Burns. The WBA ended up upgrading Crawford to "super" champion 12 days after the fight. If the fight was initially for the "super" title, there would have been no need to upgrade Crawford.

That's because we do not have Unified or Undisputed in our list, so, we list those as Super as well. Like Ward/Jack or Zhakiyanov/Burnett, see? Indongo was the unified champ, and that's what Crawford became before being named Super champ.

I see what you're saying, and while 9 times out of 10, when the WBA designates someone as a "Unified" or "Undisputed" champion it does mean that they are the "Super" champion, it is not always the case.

There are two levels of WBA champions: Super and Regular. Sometimes instead of using Super or Regular, they use words like Unified or Undisputed. Depending on the circumstances though, the Unified or Undisputed Champion can still be the Regular champion, not the Super Champion.

For example, in 2013 when Mayweather was the WBA Super champ, Trout was the WBA Regular champ, and Canelo was WBC champ at 154, Trout and Canelo unified with Canelo winning. The WBA designated Canelo as Unified champ, but since Mayweather was the Super champ, Canelo remained the Regular champ even though his title was nicknamed "Unified champ" by the WBA.

This is why (correctly) the WBA title under Canelo-Trout is the WBA World title, not the Super title.

Indongo is the second example. With the WBA moving to one champ per weight class, they had Burns as the Regular (and only) champ at 140. When he unified with Indongo (IBF) it was still for the Regular title. Because their champ became unified, the WBA nicknamed the Regular champ as "Unified champ" but he remained the Regular champ.

This is why (correctly) the WBA title under Indongo-Burns is the WBA World Title, not the Super Title.

And it was this same title that was brought in and defended against Crawford, the WBA World title, not the Super title. It wasn't until 12 days after the fight that the WBA decided to elevate Crawford to Super champion for whatever reason. So if Crawford fights at 140 again, it will then be for the Super title, but at the time of the Indongo fight, it was just the regular WBA World title.

Here's Crawford's profile page on WBA's website, you can see under the Indongo fight that the the WBA World title is listed, not the WBA Super title.
