Sky Sports confirm Mayweather-McGregor breaks UK record for PPV buys

SKY SPORTS today told Boxing News that the Mayweather-McGregor event achieved in excess of 1m buys, and has broken the record set in April by Anthony Joshua’s titanic victory over Wladimir Klitschko. It also trumps the UK audience for Mayweather’s 2015 showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

This news follows reports in the USA that the August 26 contest – which ended when Mayweather stepped on the gas in the 10th round to halt an exhuatsed and outclassed McGregor – generated a massive 6.5m buys to beat the previous best of 4.2m set when Floyd Mayweather defeated Pacquiao. The figure of 6.5m, which came via Dana White, is thought to be on the high side, though; Showtime have not yet released the official sales number.

In the UK, Sky are still waiting on the counting process to conclude, but if early indications are correct, more than £20m was spent by consumers on the Las Vegas bout. Like it or not, it seems the ‘story’ of the fight, which at its core cast a debutant alongside an all-time great, was of of greater appeal to the public than any other boxing match in the PPV era.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday which said the free to air undercard in the USA only averaged 2.4million, and that an undercard has always beaten the paid PPV for average views.


It came out of Chael Sonnens mouth though, so take a punch of salt with that.

Celebrity brings out the casuals in masses and these two are the closest thing to celebrities in combat sports right now. Floyd vs someone like The Rock would probably do more than any dream fights we could put together with active boxers.

Yes...Dan Rafael was saying it did 4m tops, while Showtime stated between 4 and 5. The 6.5 claim was from Dana White and it's doubtful that he would've gotten the numbers back that quickly...

Yh, I read today, although it's not been confirmed, Showtime predict in the mid range between 4 and 5.

One website stated that May-Pac did 700,000 in the UK, when it really did 1.5 million.

I'm pretty sure he said that was the Worldwide PPV figure, either way they made a few quid.

If two celebs had legit bust ups and challenged each other to a fight, got boxing trainers etc, it would shatter all ppv. Everyone would tune in If say Ronaldo and rooney had a bust up outside a nightclub and built up a PPV fight.

Yh wern't them 2 rappers supposed to fight on ppv? Mayweather was supposed to promote. When that died, he probably realised he has to get in the ring himself.
