Believe CBZ has a complete list of his exhibition matches. I know he iced Rex Layne too in an exhibition prior to his comeback.

Re: Joe Louis/Exhibition KO's (1948-1950)
yeah, I was looking at my copy of Joe Louis's 1978 autobiography MY LIFE
and in the back is his ring record including exhibitions which is an invaluable source of information.
As a matter of fact I think a few years ago, there was an entire thread devoted to Joe Louis's ring exhibitions (since deleted of course)
with hyper links to various newspaper articles from the google newspaper archives concerning many of them.
It was a lot more interesting to read those accounts then read another recent Joe Louis biography
were they just re-hash and repeat the same old stuff about his career fights.
I remember reading Al Hoosman was upset for years that Joe Louis had knocked him out,
he had thought going into it the exhibition that Louis was his friend and there was
some sort of Gentleman's agrrement not to go out of their way and try and harm each other
( I think Al Hoosman got a detached retina from that bout)
As Far as the exhibition KO of Elmer Ray,Joe Louis ended Ray's boxing career with a beating that one.
I get the feeling there may have been a bit of animosity someplace with someone in the bout with Pat Valentino
for him to have been taken out that way in an exhibition anyway.

Valentino, if I'm not mistaken, came into the exhibition with Louis with a detached retina. He conned the medical examiner by placing his opposite hand over his bad eye or something to that extent. I think he just got caught by punches he simply couldn't see, and Louis capitalized on it. In retrospect, if Louis was privvy to that information, would he have staged the actual comeback? Probably not.

Re: Joe Louis/Exhibition KO's (1948-1950)
yeah,I had read somewhere where Joe Louis was wanting to make a comeback around this time to reclaim the HW Championship and wanted to look good against Valentino.
and that Louis wanted to look more impressive fighting Valentino then Ezzard Charles had been who had knocked him out
in 8 rounds for the HW title just 7 weeks earlier (in a fight promoted by Joe Louis).
Valentino was told to go easy on Joe Louis by his manager, but Valentino took so many hard and cracking shots by Louis in the first 2 rounds
that Valentino decided to 'open up" in the third round and try and make it a real fight despite what his manager had asked him.
anyway this so called exhibition was scheduled for 10 rounds and Valentino was paid
$10,000 for it.
doesnt sound like 'exhibition' money to me.
BTW this was Pat Valentino's last appearence in the ring before hanging up the gloves.
I wonder if Joe Louis had beat Ezzard Charles time by both having knocking him out in the 8th round ?

Joe Louis, he also did some "private exhibitions" too.
(he even did exhibitions for the Cole Bros. circus back in the 194o's)
