Manus won a gold at light welter, went pro fighting at 160 and fought ford who is a light heavy. How much of an advantage did ford have purely on size.

If we were to compare that win comparatively to a guy who had fought Burton's equivalent level of competition then yes, it could well be a better win....or Maybe you think Burton has been through a string of good fighters...

I am saying that he doesn't have a win over a gold medalist that is his own size. He has one over a guy who won gold at 35lbs less than him. That to me isn't a good win imo. He should win with a massive advantage.

Burton has some decent names on his record for british level and would have given yarde a problem. But frank doesn't want a fighter who yarde will be out boxed by he knows yarde needs come forward fighters.

This fight pvet burton then buglioni is ducking imo and will end badly for yarde when he steps up a level. If he wins suddenly he is slightly higher in the WBO rankings and could possibly end up with a title shot before being truly tested.

I don't think Shinkwin, Smyle, and a knockout loss to Buglioni is much better, if at all, than Ford's record (Berridge, Rapira, Boonjungnom, etc). It's been claimed that Burton has solid names on his record at British level, but to me Shinkwin and Smyle are no better than English level, and Burton failed his own test against Buglioni.

So,IMO Burton doesn't really have a stronger record than Ford, and I think a bout between them would be competitive. If there's any argument for an easier route being taken, it's that Ford has come forward style that could bring him into Yarde's punching range more. But, overall, I think Ford and Burton are roughly on the same level, and I think both would be good steps up for Yarde. I say that as someone who has been critical of his matchmaking and haven't been trying to hype him up.

Fair play it took Johnny Nelson 46 fights and a world title win to get in with Lewis.

I was at Goresbrook Leisure centre for that one, before a small uninterested crowd, I remember thinking that Lewis would struggle to get out of the North East divs.

Agree with all this, but "safer for Yarde" doesn't really come in to it. Burton may well give him more problems, but he beats both easy.

I know there a stil la lot of boxes to tick, but he's surely miles ahead of the Brit domestic/vacant international title scene already. I think his problem is going to be getting the 12 round experience he'll need for the big beasts @ LHW that he'll surely be facing in the next 1-2 years ?

This reflects badly on Yarde although maybe his team don't think he's ready to step up yet which is fair enough.

But if I was in his position I'd want to prove myself in a tough domestic clash against a guy who's gonna come forward rather than a mismatch against an opponent most people have never heard of. Build it up on social media, create a bit of a grudge angle, bit of trash talk and hey presto there's a really good fight to look forward to with the prospect of another great fight to follow against Buglioni probably.

i think he's safer for yarde style-wise. its hard to tell how good yarde is because he has blown everyone away in such impressive style - but so did pele reid. burton would have been a perfect gauge of where he is because we know what burton is. do we know what ford is? if we're being unkind he's an ageing journeyman pro with a couple of twistable selling points on his record that dont stand up to much scrutiny. if yarde blows burton away (possible) then it's time for buglioni.

rather than making real, quantifiable progress going the traditional route, we are unfortunately being taken down the path of smoke and mirrors where a world ranking is trying to be bought with the tactics of a used car salesman. i dont think that's needed with yarde because he is such a talent, he's big enough and ugly enough to go the big-boy route rather than this nonsense.

There was a time a year or two back when both sides wouldn't do business at all. Paul Smith v Tony Dodson and a few fighting on prize fighter and Saunders v Ryder didn't take away from the fact that there was virtually no chance of any name Matchroom fighters fighting on the opposite side and vice versa.

It's certainly better now but I'd be very surprised if one of the top 4 or 5 Matchroom names or one of the top 3 or 4 Queensbury names were to fight on the other sides promotion.

Ultimately Hosea Burton is quite a way down the list whereas Yarde is one of the poster boys. Yarde is also still learning and while he's been bowling them over, the opposition has been crap, Hearn aluded to the fact that Josh Buatsi's next opponent stopped Baranyi, and it's Buatsi's second fight.

If Burton really is that much better than Ford, it would make sense for Yarde (who has fought no one) to step up to someone on Ford's level, and then step up to someone on Burton's level.

I watched this Hungarian kid against Dirrell (the one with balls) a few months back & he has heart. But he seemed tiny compared to Dirrell although I know he's fought at Light Heavy before. Maybe he just hasn't benefited from the same supplements that Western fighters have
