Re Jeff Hinds boxing referee from Reading

Post by Africa1961 »

Interestingly I have just heard that Jeff is being called up before The Southern Area Council for celebrating on Twitter reaching the landmark of refereeing 1,250 bouts which is the most of any current referee in Britain. As a lot of people will know Jeff was overlooked once again to be upgraded to Star Class it also happened to the other top boxing referee Ken Curtis from Hayes which a lot of boxing people found very strange. Another incident a few years ago needs mentioning an official was attending a show for one of Britain's top promoters & asked if he could bring his wife & was told that would be fine. However at the venue he was questioned aggressively by a Board member for bringing her although not a word was said to other officials sitting ringside with their wives. Mind you the person's wife was an African lady should that have made any difference? This is the same Board of No Control who find issue with Jeff for celebrating & call him up to be told off yet can grant a professional boxing licence to a cricketer who had no boxing experience whatsoever where was the sense in that? A lot of their actions simply stink of double standards or if one's face doesn't fit, well one knows what will happen. A lot of the trouble with the present Board members is they are just not Boxing people, having never been in the sport themselves which makes a lot of difference. :shame: :shame: :shame: :shame:

Can't really comment on the questions raised here, but Hinds should 100% be a Star Class referee imo.

For the sake of my lack of knowledge on refs, what is this star class you speak of? Can you ref a better standard of fight when you've acquired it?

My first thought about Jeff Hinds (if I have the right man) was always that always though his corn rows were ridiculous. Like an older man wearing a young man's haircut.

Mr Ginger Bomber, a Star Class A ref can officiate any contest from a 4x3min to a 12x3min contest whether it be for a British Title, Euro Title , World Title any licenced contest, he can also judge any of the above. He can also go around the World officiating judging or reffing. If you are a A or B ref you cannot. The point I was making was it seems Jeff has been frozen out of the top league which myself personally I think is unfair, as we know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, this is my opinion & plenty of others. Jeff has been a loyal servant to The Board for over 25yrs & I think his service & attitude to British boxing deserves recognition but he wont get it.

I am sure that when Jeff attends that hearing the tone will not be hospitable.

The Southern Area Council and the Board in general need to take a good look at themselves.

Jeff's treatment has been not been fair from the Board and to look to chastise him for an innocuous comment on Twitter is a classic example of the victimisation of him.

Ian John Lewis is star class ain't he? Rather than a race thing, I see the board as an old boys club.

I've always wondered how he scored Lewison-Dolgovs a draw when Lewison scored three knockdowns in a 4 rounder and generally seemed to get the better of it.

Going on what I have experienced with him as a referee and on the occasion he refereed a fight involving one of my fighters he was not very good tbh, he never controlled the bout very well, he was very very biased to the home fighter (I expect a little bit but he was so obvious with it). I have also watched him on TV and I admire anyone that does the job that referee's do but I am always just waiting to watch him do something wrong.

Just like fighters, referee's have their level and Imo Jeff would be around area level, not every referee just because they have achieved a certain amount of bouts will ever be good enough for top level bouts but referees like Jeff are needed to keep the sport running week to week.

I have not watched Hinds close enough to form an opinion on him as an individual but the post above got me thinking about an assumption that experience equals competence which is complete bollox as we all know.

No matter what career we all do, I bet we can all name a person we deal with / work with / at least know in some way who has years of experience but who we shake our head at for how utter shite they still are at the job. And anyone who cannot think of such a person probably actually IS that person themselves :OhYes:

I agree 100% with these comments. Jeff is not a referee I would like to see in charge of world title bouts in the UK, he gets plenty of British Title bouts and every time I see him he just looks a little out of place. I would have him in charge of a British Title bout in front of Terry O'Connor who fills me with a sense that something is going to go wrong every time I see him in charge of a feature bout.

So reading between the lines you're suggesting that there is institutional racism within the BBBoC?

I think Hinds deserve to be A-Star IMO.

Every Ref makes mistakes and he makes fewer than some of the current A-Star refs.

Err...he's referred over 1250 bouts? Cynicism aside, why wouldn't a white, Swiss-German man living in Zurich (which part I ask myself) call himself Africa 1961 and allege institutional racism concerning a boxing referee in another country? You people can be so suspicious.

Agree

Before the fights on HBO Harold Lederman usually does a quick rundown on the judges, and he pretty much always rates their quality based on how many fights they've worked. Total nonsense when you see what type of shit the veteran judges turn in week in and week out...it may actually explain how they keep getting so much work, as there is a clear leaning toward the money fighters.

Maybe that is because he isn't refereeing the top fights and isn't in the public eye as much?

Or maybe you have seen much more of him?

Either way I just feel he isn't top class, no shame in that same as not all boxers are title level. Doesn't change the good they do for the sport just at their own level

I wouldn't be in uproar if he got upgraded. From a personal level he's never dropped a huge clanger on shows I've attended.
In general the way away fighters are judged in 4-6 rounders is a disgrace.
Top level rounds shouldn't be scored even and rarely are.
Every time an away fighter nicks a round in a 4-6 rounder it tends to be 10-10
