Calzaghe fight KESSLER god damnid
If you want to prove you are one of the best this is the ONLY fight for you out there - and you know it.

there's loads of fights out there for him. Beyer, Woods, Johnson, Tarver, Briggs, Adamek. Kessler is but one of these men, though he'd bring as much to the table as any of them as I see it.
fighters these days don't just select foes thinking 'hmm, that one, he'll secure my legacy, let's take it'. Hopkins never went into that 2003 Toney fight, Jones wouldn't fight Tarver when he was (ironically) actually able to beat him, Toney never went near Juan Carlos Gomez because if he did
the only guy in the sport obsessed with conquering the biggest baddest around was Lacy, who got humiliated for his troubles.

forgot Pacquiao. it is definitely a major thing going up from fly to conquer s/bantam, and then doing the same from s/bantam to crush Barrera & Morales at feather and super feather!jamesmcdonnell wrote:Manny Pacquaio has the best resume recently of anyone out there. Marquez, Barrera, Morales twice in pretty close order it some record, and looks to face Larios, Morales and Barrera again.
i suppose Castillo and Corrales as well, with their 2004 resumees and fights w/ each other
usually different with long reigning champs. they always take too many risks after being dethroned

Why should he need to keep fighting Morales again though?jamesmcdonnell wrote:Manny Pacquaio has the best resume recently of anyone out there. Marquez, Barrera, Morales twice in pretty close order it some record, and looks to face Larios, Morales and Barrera again.
Can understand fighting Barrera being the champ and all and some saying it was a bad night for Barrera but Morales looks out of it making such low weight all those years.

still think that broken nose played a part in morales struggling so badly. maybe i'm clutching at straws and i'm wrong, but u never know until they get it on again.

Meaning: Calzaghe won't fight Kessler because he could lose.viciousmaussa wrote:there's loads of fights out there for him. Beyer, Woods, Johnson, Tarver, Briggs, Adamek. Kessler is but one of these men, though he'd bring as much to the table as any of them as I see it.

This is how I see it too.

He may not be the most reconized boxer, but you do have to feel that he is a certain threat to Calzaghe at SMW. I remember Joe saying he's waited 8 years to unify, why quit now, so, I hope he doesn't take a Beyer fight, and consider work at SMW done. He should try to unify before taking a celebrity fight, especially seeing that he's one of the few fighters who spends a career at 1 weight.Loynesy wrote:Pundit: if you think Calzaghe is avoiding Kessler because he thinks he will lose you are at best naive and at worst an idiot.
He simply isn't marketable.

Purchase a brain - they sell the cheaply on e-bay. Then we talk again (including about boxing).
I actually agree that Kessler would be the best fight for Joe if he wants to build his legacy. It may not be a massive money spinning fight but Kesslers record is fantastic against quality opposition and he's still only 27. And anyway, it's not as though Joe struggles to sell tickets as it is. I think Joe gets more credit from boxing fans and pundits in general for a win over him than any of Woods, Jones, Johnson and maybe even Tarver. Kesslers dominant win over Mundine in Sydney was superb, it's just unfortunate he hasn't had any exposure over here or in the US.

Whilst I think Joe could sell a Kessler fight to the public, nobody really knows who he is. The problem is that Joe probably wants either an easy fight for a big payday, or a more risky fight for a massive payday.
Kessler doesn't fit into either cateogory. He's good enough to be a risk, but not well known enough to make for a fight which was any bigger than a standard defence for Calzaghe, or at least not enough more for Calzaghe to take a risk.
For me, fights against Woods and Johnson are still risky propositions, moreso Johnson who I think has a good enough inside game to take the fight to Calzaghe, and either would be a better sell for a fight at home.
I would like to see the Kessler fight made, but understand why it will probably never happen.
It's the same reason that Mayweather has no interest in Margarito, and fought instead against Gatti. It's why a lot of fighters never unify the titles, but prefer to weight hop.

Do you think Kesslers career has been much different than Joes?
When Joe was 27 he was 28-0, Kessler is 37-0 at 27.
Joe was 22-0 when challenging for the WBO title, aged 24.
Kessler was 34-0 when challenging for the WBA title, aged 25.
At age 27, Joes last six opponents were David Starie (W12), Rick Thornberry (W12), Robin Reid (W12), Juan Carlos Gimenez Ferreyra (TKO10), Branko Sobot (TKO3) and Chris Eubank (W12).
At age 27, Kesslers last six opponents have beeen Eric Lucas (TKO10), Anthony Mundine (W12), Manny Siaca (TKO8), Andre Thysse (TKO11), Julio Caesar Green (KO1) and Henry Porras (TKO9).

I would say Woods is a top LHW fighter, the way he handled Gonzales proves this. I think he has improved alot since the Johnson fights. I'd pick him to beat Tarver, who doesn't impress me at all. British loyalty swaying my pick ? ProbablyMattyp151 wrote:Woods isn't even a top LHW fighter, he wouldn't be a tough fight for Joe by any means. It's a big fight for England, but on the World scene, Clinton has left a lot on the table.
Gonzales made a career off of beating an old DM, and stealing a win from Johnson. He lost to Erdei, who hasn't proved that he is truly that good, let alone enough to be "lineal". Honestly, if you watched Montell Griffin in his last fight, and seeing that even he beat Gonzalez pretty solidly before it was stopped, you have to wonder if Julio has anything left.Neri1983 wrote:I would say Woods is a top LHW fighter, the way he handled Gonzales proves this. Woods has much more to do at LHW before he worries about fighting a guy from SMW. As Joe has work to do at SMW before worrying about Woods. I just don't see the point of this fight for Joe, as it proves nothing at LHW. You want to make a statement before you retire, go after Adamek, Tarver, Kessler, and Beyer, and then I won't question.

The Risk-return ratio isn't right; and risk-return is what risk-adverse F.rank Warren has in mind. This is what I've been saying all along.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Whilst I think Joe could sell a Kessler fight to the public, nobody really knows who he is. With one point I disagree though: Kessler would of course be significantly bigger than the "standard Calzaghe defense" against folks like Ashira, Jimenez, Mgr Mgrk...., McIntyre, Pudwill, Thornberry, Salem, Ferreyra, or Sobot. Quality-wise this would be Calzaghe's best fight ever. And as regards marketability, only a few fights at light-heavyweight may have a bigger pull -- Woods, Tarver, Johnson, Jones -- and perhaps Beyer at s-m. But certainly not Otis Grant, which may be his next opponent according to rumour.
After all, a bout against Kessler would still be a unification fight for a relatively highly regarded belt. And Calzaghe hasn't been in too many of these, has he?
P
I understand where you're coming from, but Margarito doesn't have the following that Kessler does. Kessler has a stake at the SMW division, no one questions that. But with Margarito taking on some of the fighters he has, he is really just getting lost in the shuffle of big names at WW.jamesmcdonnell wrote:It's the same reason that Mayweather has no interest in Margarito, and fought instead against Gatti. Not to make this a Margarito/Mayweather #386 thread, but I do think Mayweather should get in there with WW version of Jeff Lacy and kick the shit out of him.
