MAJOR FIGHTS CANCELLED/POSTPONED IN RECENT YEARS?

Post by Best Coast »

Commentators on Fox Sports Radio have been pointing out that amidst the recent UFC cancellations/postponements (Demetrious Johnson being the latest) that it's been very rare in the past few decades for major boxing matches to be called off or pushed back to a later date, usually due to injury or illness.

I remember there was a string of postponements in the 1990s (Terry Norris-Simon Brown, etc) and of course one of the most famous all-time postponements was 40+ years ago when Foreman got injured training for "Rumble in the Jungle" vs Ali, but I cannot think of any recent ones.

Anyone remember major fights postponed/cancelled since Hopkins-Trinidad was pushed back 2 weeks in 2001 due to 9/11 terror attacks in NYC? That is the most recent one I can think of but I'm sure there have been others...

Just quickly, Fury Klit 2 and maybe an Andre Ward fight because of swelling of the cankles although I think it was an undercard fight.

Yeah, that was over 10 years ago and most of the other fights mentioned above were scheduled outside the US, so compared to UFC, it looks like boxing rarely has major fights cancelled or postponed.

UFC has several already this year!!
