Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
It sure sounded Saturday night as if Canelo Alvarez will make Gennady Golovkin wait once again.
The Mexican icon confirmed that he won’t return to the ring until May, but Alvarez wouldn’t commit to boxing Golovkin again in that fight. Their action-packed, hard-fought, 12-round draw warrants an immediate rematch, but Alvarez indicated Golovkin might have to wait until next September to get another shot at him.
“Look, right now I wanna rest,” Alvarez said through a translator during their post-fight press conference. “Whatever the fans want, whatever the people want and ask for, we’ll do. You know that’s my style. But right now, who knows if it’s in May or September? But one thing’s for sure – this is my era, the era of Canelo.
Earlier in the press conference, Alvarez acknowledged that there should be a rematch following the inconclusive ending to their long-awaited showdown at T-Mobile Arena.
“With this kind of fight, absolutely, boxing wins, the fans win,” said Alvarez, who made Golovkin wait nearly two years before fighting him. “And if the fans wanna see it again, why not? They can see it again.”
When a reporter prefaced a question to Alvarez on Saturday night by stating De La Hoya had said he would pursue a rematch, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez corrected him.
“Oscar said there is a rematch clause,” Gomez said. “He didn’t say he was gonna exercise it.
The question was, ‘Is there a rematch clause?’ The answer was, ‘Yes, there is a rematch clause.’ We’re gonna sit down with [Alvarez] and see what he wants to do.”
Whatever Alvarez decides to do, Tom Loeffler, the managing director for K2 Promotions, said Saturday night that he expects Golovkin to fight again in December.

Translation: I want to wait until GGG gets older because if I fight him immediately, I will lose unless two of the three judges are biased/corrupt again.

Time is clearly on Canelo's side. The longer he delays the better his chances of a legit win!!
Let GGG get more wear & tear on that 35-year-old body, smart strategy for Alvarez.

Well thank you Canelo, for giving the fans what they want......
planning to take 8 months off, fighting twice a year in your prime, delaying a second fight with Golovkin, your most worthy opponent since a 36 year old Cotto in 2015, delaying it potentially another year after a two year plus delay initially. That sums up your era Canelo.

Coincidentally, Billy Joe Saunders is also planning to fight again in December.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Whatever Alvarez decides to do, Tom Loeffler, the managing director for K2 Promotions, said Saturday night that he expects Golovkin to fight again in December.
Perhaps GGG and Saunders will face each other in December?
Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
More than one person here has pointed out that Cotto is scheduled in December and he wanted to fight the winner of 3G v GingerHead. If GingerHead is not fighting until next May, I guess 3G may be elected.

No surprise, I'm glad. Not interested in a rematch.

GGG should tell them to go get effed

I agree.RScarf1 wrote:Translation: I want to wait until GGG gets older because if I fight him immediately, I will lose unless two of the three judges are biased/corrupt again.
It is all a bit conspiracy theory, but I believe it.
Oscar though it was the right time to beat GGG, but maybe we leave it a year longer so we don't need the judges.
Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
Basically, Oscar was wrong about Canelo's abilities. Prior to this fight, I thought that Canelo was not ready to legitimately beat GGG based on his past performances such as against Chavez Jr. and Lara. Canelo is a B level boxer, maybe B+. He is above average, but not a real pound for pound top 10. He's never been that and he never will be. If Canelo was not promoted by Golden Boy, he would have more losses. Jacobs is arguably better than Canelo. Canelo will probably be inducted into the Hall of Fame someday, but so has Arturo Gatti and Barry McGuigan. Canelo is not elite like Golovkin. Canelo is good, but not great. Canelo is good enough to win though because when he goes the distance against the elite, the judges usually take care of the rest.KiwiRider wrote:I agree.RScarf1 wrote:Translation: I want to wait until GGG gets older because if I fight him immediately, I will lose unless two of the three judges are biased/corrupt again.

Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
Every month that passes favours Canelo as Father Time catches up with GGG, they thought that on Saturday they'd left it long enough but discovered they'd been too early so they'll make him wait another year- what a disgrace when you consider true Mexican warriors of the past.
Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
that 8 months layoff is biggest disapointment. Why no december fight? there are some boxers besides GGG ....damn De la Hoya is cancer of boxing
Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
Is it a legit win if he waits till there signs of decline?Best Coast wrote:Time is clearly on Canelo's side. The longer he delays the better his chances of a legit win!!

Smart strategy if you look at it at that way.
Thank god other sports don't emulate boxing. Many other sports treat us to the best vs the best without any catches
Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
As for the op, no shock, I called it Canelo would wait it out
If they can't do an immediate rematch if I were golovkin I'd say forget it

It will be hard for GGG to resist a rematch, I think if it's within 12 months, he should be able to beat GGG more convincingly, maybe even stop him. I think there's quite a gulf between them, that 1 year won't bridge.

GGG could fight BJS or Zurdo Ramirez in Dec. then retire.

I think that Canelo will know he probably can't do any better than he did, and that with the additional scrutiny from the controversy, he won't be getting any favours, I expect that GGG will retire before a rematch happens.

Translation: I'm a fraud like Mayweather who has all the political protection and establishment rigging everything for me. We cheated Golovkin once and if he wants to get cheated again he will - but when I want to. I'm a protected manufactured fraud barely good enough to serve as a sparring partner for Hopkins Toney Monzon Hagler. But fixing and corruption can turn a mediocre decent fighter like Mayweather or Carnera into a counterfeit superstar. Such is boxing in America today. Don't blame me, you would take the money too.

Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
I agree that Canelo can't do better, but I think the corruption will continue. They will just find two other corrupt judges. I think GGG will fight 2 or 3 more times and then retire. I don't think there will ever be a rematch.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think that Canelo will know he probably can't do any better than he did, and that with the additional scrutiny from the controversy, he won't be getting any favours, I expect that GGG will retire before a rematch happens.

Mayweather was the best fighter of our generation. He might have been a diva and a prick but he was head and shoulders unarguably The Best. Alvarez couldn't carry his jockstrap.montrealsuper wrote:Translation: I'm a fraud like Mayweather who has all the political protection and establishment rigging everything for me. Floyd was a protected fraud, protected by HBO Showtime Haymon Espinoza Ross Greenberg Schaefer. His ducking of Margarito Cotto (08) Williams Martinez Pacquiao for six years exposed the ugly truth that lies and fraud have blinded most of the public from realizing.clopixolacuphase wrote:Mayweather was the best fighter of our generation. If Floyd was truly great he would have jumped at the chance to expose prime Pac in 2010, just like he jumped on the chance to beat Baldomir Guerero Berto Ortiz etc. Wake up. If Floyd was a true great he never would have called himself a "coward." You got rope a doped by a fraud. Canelo is the same fraud BS just with different packaging.

Re: Canelo Confirms Return in May; Won't Commit to Golovkin Rematch
How come people on here act as is GGG is 45 years old or so. All I read is, 1 more fight nd he should retire etc. Retirement talks. He already said he wants to fight til he's 40. He is still the best 160er today without a doubt. Wlad was 41 and he boxed like he's 30.
GGG doesn't look like he is 35, nor does he fight like one. I think he has a lot of fights left in him. He's very active, likes fighting at least 3 times a year with 2016 bein the only time in his career where he fought twice.
I think he should fight BJS in December. That will accomplish his longtime goal of being the undisuputed champion at 160. I don't really care for a rematch vs. Canelo. I saw all I needed to. Was a good fight, you can call is close, but I believe majority of fans ans many media outlets had GGG as the winner. The same Mexican fans that booed GGG at the weigh in were cheering for him after the fight. That tells you all you need.
GGG has many options. I think the real questions are aimed at Canelo. Where does he go? Who does he fight? There are some tough fights at MW, who's he going to fight? Charlo? Jacobs? I don't think so. Charlo is mando for GGG I believe.
Canelo will probably fight Quillin or Mora next. Wouls be decent to see him fight Lemieux.
