What Canelo v Golovkin taught us

Post by nobleart1978 »

After watching the fight on Saturday night I thought - it is a good job these two guys weren't in there with Leonard, Hagler or Hearns!

Leonard would have boxed Golovkins' ears off. Same goes for Canelo.

Hagler and Hearns would have sparked em.

The current era is mediocre in comparison to the 80s in the middleweight division.

Confirmation that Canelo has similar stamina to David Price.

Hearns would have likely got chinned by GGG. Suspect whiskers and likes a fight - if he couldn't ko GGG he would have got stopped himself.

GGG struggles with movers, if you can take his power someone like SRL would have boxed his ears off.

Mayweather would have boxed his head off too if the fight had been made at light-middle around 5 years ago when it was muted.

Canelo moved around just like Jacobs. GGG cuts the ring of so well. If you're a mover, you're still getting caught.

I thought canelo was superior with his footwork and footspeed. Even when he was on the ropes he was there by choice. This is the same lad who had to take breathers on the ropes against 5 punches per round Chavez Jr. Golovkin wasnt really effectively cutting the ring off. Can you think of any times canelo looked trapped? He also was able to pivot away from golovkins right hand and get away EVERY time. Zero adjustment on that right hand from golovkin

Not so.....

You will find some fans who think he lost both fights.

Even if you don't agree with the above, a fight which is debatably won doesn't suggest he deals with movement very well

I hate these comparisons with days gone by! Fact of the matter is you just don't know! That on Saturday was a high quality fight.

We learnt that boxing fans should boycott Vegas (its corruption's so far beyond doubt now), and that it's an even greater shame that Pirog isn't still active.

I would certainly pick Hagler and Leonard to beat Golovkin, but I don't think that's much of a revelation tbh - I'd be surprised if many people had ever rated GGG above them.

Hearns would get destroyed quickly though, Golovkin would be a nightmare matchup for him.

I'd favour McCallum, too, but what a fight that might've been.

[edit]

Talking of Mike, Golovkin looked tired in the legs from the middle rounds to me. The US commentators were talking about him not committing out of respect for Canelo, but I saw it very much as him pacing himself. He's a great chin, great power, and his arms don't tire, but I can imagine McCallum wearing him down for a late stoppage through exhaustion. His body looks ready to go before his chin.

You kind of expose Golovkin by running from him — he was gulping in air at times, and not all that far into the fight — but that's not how you beat him (without help).
