GGG vs Cotto, December, acceptable for you ?

Post by ValMar »

What do you think about this possibility ? Personally, I don't care. Cotto has been a top level fighter, but he has passed his prime, and, he is not a natural MW.

Why fight the aged midget? Golovkin only has so many fights left.

Rather Cotto than trash like Saunders.

Cotto would be a good one but he wants to retire and I think GGG is too much for him. Cotto would probably fight Khan or Brook. :OhYes:

Cotto deserves any fight he wants. He'd light GGG up early too before slowly getting beat down.

A fight between GGG and Cotto is possible, because of the money involved.

However, it would be incredibly difficult for Gennady to obtain permission from both the IBF and also the WBC to sidestep his mandatory challengers.

Also, there's a small possibility that K2 may strongly decide against allowing the 35 year old veteran to engage in another contest so soon after competing in last Saturday's really tough affair, since it would potentially present an unacceptable risk of him potentially missing out on the Canelo rematch. We've already seen Gennady refrain from signing the contract to face Billy Joe Saunders for precisely this reason.

The final issue to consider, relates to GGG obtaining permission from GBP to engage in an interim bout, since he's contractually-bound to grant Canelo a rematch.

Golovkin vs a prime Cotto would be an incredible fight to see at the end of the year. But Cotto is not in his prime anymore and having just won the vacant WBO light middleweight title I think we'd all want to see him go out with one final world title defence on his terms.

If the fight was made right now, Golovkin right now would do serious damage and it would be in poor taste to see a future hall of Famer like Cotto getting pole axed by a bigger, stronger champion at their weight class.

For me, right now a good farewell fight would be a trilogy finale with Antonio Margarito.
These are my reasons for saying this:
*The biggest grudge match in their careers was with each other
*Both have one win a piece (despite all that happened and Cotto dominating the second as well as he did)
*It could still be competitive as both come to the end of their careers
*A WBO world title to defend/fight for
*Neither man has an opponent lined up for the rest of the year
*both men last fought at a similar time (Cotto - 26/08 - Kamegai, Margarito - 02/09 - Jones) so they have the same sort of time to prepare.

There are worse ways to go out of a boxing career.

Margarito can't fight in the states as far as I know. I doubt Miguel wants to have his last fight in Tijuana. I also doubt he wants to give Tony the payday and he wants to go out with a big fight.

fight with Cotto is unacceptable, because there are Charlo, Saunders, and others at 160, 168 and 154. Not only for GGG but also for Canelo

Austin Trout beat the piss out of Cotto several years ago. I see no reason why a much diminished version of Cotto should be fighting a middleweight killer. Cotto wields a lot of drawing power and has enough leverage to place himself in a much safer fight whether there is less risk of losing or getting hurt. Golovkin would hurt him a lot worse than Trout, and Trout left him with severe redness and swelling on every part of his face and head. Every facial feature busted, limping out of the arena, gasping.

Cotto - Khan would be a logical match-up. I'd say both are top 15 in terms of drawing power; the combination of the two could probably bring-in a lot of revenue. At this stage of Cotto's career, he probably would lose to any light middleweight in the top 7, so he's probably better off fighting someone who is #10. Khan is probably around #10-15 as a light middleweight, and a significantly better risk-reward ratio than anyone else in the same ballpark (e.g. Kanat Islam, Brian Carlos Castano, Michel Soro).

If you'd like to see Cotto beaten to a pulp again like Margarito 1, then sure, very acceptable.

On one hand I'd yes so Miguel gets a good payday, on the other I'd say no because I don't want to see him badly hurt.
Miguel Cotto has been good for boxing and deserves to paid highly, perhaps just not against GGG but it's his choice at the end of the day should he be offered the fight.

I wanted Golovkin to beat crap out of Cotto when he was sitting on the WBC title and ducking GGG, but now facing Cotto would be a waste of time.

I think Canelo vs. Cotto is more likely to happen than GGG vs. Cotto.

What a farce that entire scenario was between Cotto slithering his way to the title, Canelo winning and vacating. Bullshit opportunists on parade.

It is acceptable to me precisely for this reason.

I was never part of the GGG is unbeatable gang (I still think Froch and Ward would have both done him) but the bloke has every one of his paydays coming to him and Cotto is another one. If Calelo is going to hide under a rock for another year this is fine by me. And BJS can wait. Doesn't he have a mandatory or something that nobody wants to watch?

Cotto is retiring in December and canelo isn't fighting until may, you've got an uphill climb nailing that one.

Didn't forget. It's included in the shenanigan package.

Agreed. Although I'm not sure about Froch. That would've been a war and Froch's mind was no longer in it anyway. Ward would win a scrappy, ugly fight on points, deserved or not.

GGG is a MW, Froch was a SMW, Ward was at SMW first, than LHW.......
Ward had better think about Stevenson and Beterbiev.........

Yes, it would likely be Cotto's final fight. Big win for GGG, big money fight. I say let's see it.
