Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Many people on this forum have boxing experience whether as a pro, as an amateur or just in sparring. So the question is if you could put in say a decent couple of months preparation would you beat him in a 4 round contest.
For me it's a no I'm afraid. I've spent many years off and on training and sparring but I have zero talent and even if he was equally talentless he'd probably edge me on fitness at my age.

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
I've never trained a minute of boxing in my life so my answer would be no.
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Couple of months prep, then yes.... the experience you've had would be invaluable and yes I'd think you'd do him.
I remember sparring a bit of a local hard man, fancied himself as a boxer and much bigger and probably fitter than me - I was training but he was training, playing rugby and working on the building (whereas I was in the books).... he didn't come boxing training again after the spar.... infact after telling all his mates "boxing is easy and he KO'd me in a round" my coach went to the pub and invited all his friends to see us spar again.
A couple of months wouldn't be enough time for Rio to learn the basics, which you already have... all you'd need to do is get fit.

I don't understand that. It's character building.stujones wrote:Couple of months prep, then yes.... the experience you've had would be invaluable and yes I'd think you'd do him.

I played rugby for twelve years from being 6, the lads who came back the second week were accepted instantly. Lots didn't to be fair.
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Trust me I didn't go hard on him at all. He just knew it wasn't for him. Good Rugby player and would have made absolute mince meat of me in a "step outside" scenario, but it is a whole different scenario when it is supervised and with rule and with gloves on. We gave him a great welcome but he assumed that he would have smashed me after one session as I was about 4 stone lighter than him (at the time). He might have come good, but the gulf in experience was key and I was hardly national champion material. For a few months I feel I would have beaten him with one arm until he gained the necessary experience. Rio wouldn't have that in 2 months.Covfefe wrote:I don't understand that. I doubt it, he's going to be fit and strong. Could probably mess him about, frustrate him, Jan his head off, hold etc but he'd probably stop me over four threes. The difference between 2's and 3's is so much more than people realise. Even on the pads!
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
As much as I'm a boxing fan I feel I'd be in that fellas league. I've never done a bit of boxing. Throwing daft punches in a rugby match is a world away.stujones wrote:Trust me I didn't go hard on him at all. He just knew it wasn't for him. I wish I'd have had a go at boxing now, but I'm way too old now.

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
I once sparred with an Olympic gold medalist in rowing and a top rugby player.
Both were much bigger than me (I was 11-12 stone, boxing 5 years) they were terrible and neither could take a punch. At least they didn't like it.
Ferdinand does seem a better shape for boxing, and it he has at least been hitting the bag and pads for a few years then he might have some reasonable form.
However it all tends to fall apart when you have someone in front of you who can box a bit. It's very different.
I expect he would beat Flintoff mind.

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Yes the 2 months key preparation would be key for my prediction.... Now, I'd definitely agree I am overweight and wouldn't have the fitness to keep him off - 2 months of solid prep though would make a world of difference. The 2 months would benefit an experienced (unfit) ex boxer over a fit novice.mickey1975 wrote:I doubt it, he's going to be fit and strong. I think most people would choose the yes option if they watch him hit the pads

Difficult to say as we don't know if he'll be any good. He's a big unit and obviously in great shape. Think he done ballet as a kid as well so his footwork should be decent lol. Few months proper training then probably but at the moment I'm still struggling with my jogging so I'd be blowing out my hole after two minutes!
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
No. I've never trained a day in my life, and am out of shape.
Even if I put the effort in over the next two months, which I wouldn't, I'd still not win.

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
even though im a little sh1t I would expect to beat him soundly, the bigger lads are easy pickings when they are novices, at my old amateur club we sometimes had the bouncers from town coming in looking for a spar which I was always up for, on the street I would have no/very little chance with them (i was a bantam) but in the ring it was all alien to them which made it incredibly easy for me, never saw any of them come back for a second go
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Easily i'm a former motorbike racer which is way more dangerous than boxing I'd rip him to pieces

He'd probably be to big for me.
I'd still have a crack over 4 rounds though, even with my dodgy retina.

I'd annihilate fornicate out of him with my fearlessness alone crashing at 120mph is a lot harder than getting hit by boxing glovesStuarty30 wrote:You could nut him with your helmetbanjo wrote:Easily i'm a former motorbike racer which is way more dangerous than boxing I'd rip him to pieces
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Being really new and only having 2month to train there will be so much missing from him
Not enough time for basics/fundamentals to be burned into muscle memory/brain and if he hasn't got a top trainer teaching him he will be a novice picking up bad habits from the off , like in that vid, terrible footwork, as a novice that needs to be tightened up right away or else it'll be a hard chain to break, same with telegraphing that uppercut
I also have a feelin he won't be good fighting on the inside, and as a newcomer he'd be so busy trying to protect his head he'd leave the body a bit open, I'd work my way in close, whip shots into the body, Take away his reach and grind him down
Honestly wish him all the best and fair play and good luck to him for having a go
When someone's just starting out who they've got training them is very important as bad habits in boxing once they are picked up are very hard to break, I think if you've got good basics, are fit, give Rio angles and feints and good movement then you should beat him

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
If he was my weight I'd get the gloves on and box rio now at 1 minutes notice and that's after 2 Cornish pasties and a cream cake

I could av him- end of
Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
He'd have the edge in height, reach, fitness and boxing experience
i might weigh more and be willing to give away a couple points for low blows and bitting
I fancy my chances
Edit- I meant to say butting but that will do

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
Often see videos of footballers doing pads like this. Are those guys meant to be actual boxing trainers or just personal trainers who have bought a pair of pads? For everyone's sake I hope it's the latter as I've not seen one give any piece of advice to the footballers etc that clearly have no technique.boxingknockout wrote:I think most people would choose the yes option if they watch him hit the pads

Re: Could You Beat Rio Ferdinand ?
I was thinking the same - I hope, for rio's sake that that's a vid from the past and the mush in it is just a keep-fit boxercise coach..
Although why would Rio be so keen to film it
If Rio wants to give himself a decent shot at this he needs to train with a man that will tighten up his every move and tell him the very second he does something wrong
