Europe vs Golde Glove Chicago March 1951

Post by Tron »

I'm from Oslo Norway and have in my possession a private
photo from a now deceased collector of boxing items. The
photo is from Chicago, 29th of March 1951 and shows the European team
and the American team of Golden Gloves winner. The teams
are on file in the ring just before the fight. I have not been able to find
much information about who the boxers are and the results.

Some facts/ clues:
The lightweight /or light welter from Europe is Leif Hansen
of Oslo, now deceased and a friend of the original owner of the photo

Boxing News mentioned in March '51 that the british boxer Peter Crotty
is a member of the European team, but the result of his and
the rest of the contest
is not mentioned by BN. Crotty did indeed fight, a recent webpage
tells that he lost to Herschel Acton i Chicago and beat
Willie Davis in Washington 5th of April same year.

The heavyweight on the Euro-team is Ingemar Johansson
who kO'd Ernest Fann in the 3 round, in Chicago.

The original owner of the photo once told me that
the middelweight probably is Swedish OL- champ Stig Sjölin,
and that the Finn Hamalainen probably is the bantam/feather.

Can anyone help me with a complete and detailed record of these
to fights ( Chicago and Washington) I am especially interested
in the feats of my fellow country man Leif Hansen, a legendary
figure in Norwegian Boxing as amateur, pro and promotor

I could tell you the European Champions from 1951 but not the European team that would have gone to the US.

Could you get the picture online for us to see. One boxer that should stand out if he is there will be legend Laszlo Papp (HUN)

The 1951 Golden Gloves Winners were

112
Pat Riley (Fort Worth)
118
Nate Brooks (Cleveland)
126
Ken Davis (Los Angeles)
135
Bobby Bickle (Kansas City)
147
Willard Henry (Kansas City)
160
Richard Guerrero (Chicago)
175
Bobby Jackson (Cleveland)
Heavyweight
Ernest Fann (Cleveland)
