Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
I had it 8-4 to Parker. I had Parker up 6-4 going into the last 2 rounds in which I thought he won both.
116-112 Parker win for me. Hughie was extremely negative. That's about as negative as a fighter can be without actually running around the ring like Malik Scott did against Luis Ortiz. A lot of his "jabs" were none scoring flicks with the back of the hand. He even got warned for it at some point in the fight.
It was a stinker of a fight. With one guy trying to win but not having the talent or movement to close down his opponent or the boxing brain to change tactics, and the other guy simply trying to get to the final bell throwing shots which wouldn't hurt my 5 year old daughter.

Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
Fury was actually looking pretty good on the few times he tried to throw some punches. Too bad he did that like two times in the whole fight. He clearly lacks the fighting spirit of Tyson.
Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
I thought Fury won 116-112.
I'm surprised by how many people had it something like 116-112 Parker and many think 118-110 Parker (2 judges) was correct.

I'd love to see Parker fight Browne. I'd probably pick Parker to win, but Browne is undefeated and very dangerous although he's admittedly much slower than Hughie over 100 metresGrailer wrote:Yeah but no one really knows who Browne is . I think Parker needs to fight someone very popular in Britian to ensure when he fights AJ they extract maximum value . And after Parker knocks out AJ he can then fight Wilder who is the best heavyweight in the world at the moment.Perseus wrote:As long as the WBO is ok with it Parker should use that voluntary defense to fight Browne.
Parker wouldn't need to travel for that fight, it should do well domestically, Browne is undefeated and shows up to fight not run.................which would make Parker look very good. Parker would just destroy Browne.
Tony I can certainly see how you had Fury winning it and when the two wide scores were read out I was expecting them to be in Hughie's favour. I was surprised when they went to Parker but not disappointed.
I'm glad Parker got the decision though. A World Heavyweight Title fight shouldn't be won by someone who stays on his bike for twelve rounds steadfastly refusing to engage. I hope Hughie learns a lesson from this because he has excellent movement, a fine engine, and with just a few minor modifications in his attitude and approach, he could be really effective.
Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
We shouldn't forget though that Hughie has only just turned 23, in heavyweight terms he's just a baby. He doesn't have that same fukc-you persona of Tyson, he's the quiet and thoughtful type. It must have been quite tough for him in the shadow of his ultimate alpha male cousin.
Despite all the difficulties this young man has just lost a majority decision to the very same Joseph Parker that certain misguided souls on this forum expect to knock out Anthony Joshua (Stop sniggering at the back there!) and with a little better balance between self-preservation and aggressive intent, might have got a deserved decision.
Once he's come to terms with his disappointment, this achievement might give him the confidence to realize he has the equipment, he really doesn't need to box with such timidity. He may mature into a heavyweight to be reckoned with over the next few years.

I agree. Hughie kept setting Parker up with the jab and then running away. If he had turned the jabs into combinations by following up with additional punches he may have got himself into the fight.Heretic wrote:Fury was actually looking pretty good on the few times he tried to throw some punches. Maybe. I think he performed well the other night in terms of staying in there with a world champion but I don’t think he has that championship mettle, to attain a championship medal. Basically, I didn’t see much fight in him and that’s how this fight was scored. He’s tall, rangy, elusive, has a chin, balance and energy enough to dance for 12 rounds, his hands were fast and accurate...he has boxing skills but didnt fight, he was so controlled to the point of having no fight not even for parts of a round...close rounds. Whether that was a game plan error, a corner error, or is just H Fury. I’m making some big assumptions based on the one fight I’ve seen of his but but was his big break, his championship opportunity. I see him as a tricky gatekeeper, not a champion, but time will tell.candyslim wrote:We shouldn't forget though that Hughie has only just turned 23, in heavyweight terms he's just a baby. Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
Yes it will (tell) but I can see that Fury might have thought he had it all under control. Parker was struggling to land anything, he looked frustrated and short of ideas. Hughie was content to keep Parker from having any chance to set himself and he was catching him with gentle jabs and pot shots. It might have seemed to him that there was no need to take risks, it was in the bag.
This might be just the kick up the arse he needs. He will know now that fans and judges do not appreciate that style, not even a little bit and that his safety first tactics have lost him a very winnable fight.
He is very elusive, has good basics, a seemingly decent chin, and stamina in spades. He may even have a decent dig on him when he troubles to set himself. He's very young as heavyweights go and now he knows he can hold his own with a belt-holder. As he matures he will gain strength, power and confidence - he's not much more than a boy at present.
I think he has a very good future.

Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
Hmmm..."MIGHT BE" are the operable words for Hugie... But nobody pays off on MIGHT BE... People are looking for IS... As in "His future IS great" – not might be great. YOUR future might be great.. MY future might be great.
I always said Tyson Fury reminded me of Buster Douglas – a man who bounced around the Heavyweight Division for years.. Buster never trained hard or lived up to his potential... But then he gets offered a World Title Fight against a man who Buster instinctively knew he could beat... Just like Tyson Fury took one look at Wladimir Klitschko and laughed his ass off. “I can beat that chump easy.” Everybody thought "Yeah, right."
So back to Buster Douglas.. Buster starts training his ass off like never before in his life... Buster scores a mind blowing upset commiserate with his boxing talents -- but Buster didn't get paid well. You see, everybody figured Buster was a 1-round-job for Tyson.. But never Fear!!! ..Buster was guaranteed 25 million dollars for his 1st Title Defense against Evander Holyfield -- and better YET, all he had to do was show up and answer the 1st bell – which he DID do. Fat Buster not only answered the 1st bell, but the next 2 bells before taking a powder. He nailed down his 25MM dollars. Smart guy.
Tyson Fury never made it that far.. His rematch with Wladimir Klitschko was signed, sealed and delivered.. All Fury had to do is answer the 1st freakin’ bell, fat or not.. You’d think he could do that – so he could cash in big time win or lose right???.. Wouldn't you answer the bell for that money??? He told everyone he hoped Klitschko would blast him out so he could be done with Boxing. But at least make the 1st bell kid. How hard is that?? Feather your nest a little.
How much like Buster Douglas and Tyson Fury is Hughie??? ... I suspect quite a bit.

I’ve been singing Hughie Fury’s praises for a looooong time, but got mocked for it.candyslim wrote:ValMar wrote:You are right, Candyslim. Now that this fighter that has only just turned 23 years of age has proven himself to be a genuine world-class operator, he’ll definitely come again and possibly grow and improve to become a very difficult world title challenger to overcome within the next three or four years.
Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
I'm not sure about world class operator... He took on the low hanging fruit of Boxing's 3 echelon Heavyweight Champions and wasn't successful in his own country.. So now he's got 900,000 dollars.. Is that money going back into his career??? Or a fancy new car and upgrades on his house.. Or maybe a new house.. and a whole new wardrobe befitting a top contender? How much is he going to study that Parker recording and nail down his mistakes.
Will he kick back now and enjoy a 3-month vacation that extends into 6 months? He can if he likes.. We'll know more when we hear who his next opponent is and how soon that opponent is announced.. and see what he looks like in his next fight.. Joshua or Wilder would LOVE to fight him so he could go for the quick buck too.. It will be interesting to see his attitude and approach.. To see if he's serious about Boxing -- or it's all a joke like it was to Tyson Fury.

Re: Joseph Parker vs Hughie Fury
No, at this stage it is only a "might be" we cannot know for certain that he will achieve his potential, but the signs are good: He's not got his "man-strength" yet, and he's not yet developed self-confidence. They say heavies mature later, and in so many ways at 23 he still seems very boyish - not quite Tom Hanks in "Big" but he did make me think of it. Parker is less than 3 years older, but there is a gulf in terms of maturity. When Hughie matures he will not feel the need to make like big cousin Tyson, and try to disrespect his opponent. That is not his true character.
Despite this he fought Joseph Parker WBO Champion of the Word. Probably not better than 3 - 6 among the best heavyweights in the world, but at the very least a genuine contender. The point is young Hughie matched him, and were it scored by a purist with no aversion to negative tactics, would have won it by a distance.
Give him a year or two and there will be nobody in the world that would make you wince at the thought of Hughie sharing a ring with, and even now he has shown he can compete with and belongs at world level.
He could hardly be more different to his cousin Kalan, despite his embarrassing attempts to mimic his antics. Let the young man commit a crime shall we before we condemn him to the gallows.

Having watched the Parker fight, I have to say Hughie certainly doesn't look like a future heavyweight champion to me.
