Overrated Trainers

Are there any particular trainers (former or current) that, despite a fair amount of fanfare and media adulation, you just can't understand the hype?

I won't give my selection just yet, would like to see your opinions.

All of them. Honestly what trainer could teach Roy Jones, Mayweather etc anything after the age of 22 or so.

My thoughts exactly. Also not a big fan of Roach. Massive gob sh*te in the past few years IMO. a friend met and had a drink with him and said he was OK, though.

with this in mind, would it be somewhat blasphemous to suggest Angelo Dundee? ready made superstar material in Leonard and Ali. more a supervisor if you will.

Enzo Calzaghe... always thought of him as a bit of a cheerleader rather than trainer. Always shouting and balling but never giving out any instructions in the corner.
Dean Powell always seemed to be the 2nd in corner and it was him that impressed me.. quiet and in the boxers ear as Enzo went mental

Both Haye and Groves showed plenty of improvement under Booth.
Calzaghe had his son, Rees and Pryce since they were kids and Maccrenelli improved a lot under him too.

I think we should judge Booth and how he does with the likes of Burnett, Kelly and Reid etc. Haye and Groves were outstanding amateurs and were likely to be top pro's. Robert Lloyd Taylor, Anthony Small or Spencer Fearon didn't look great under Booth. I personally think Burnett is overrated. Haye looked vulnerable in a lot of fights, Fragomeni, Barrett etc. Groves barely got past DeGale and it was classed as some masterful tactical gameplan devised by Booth. I think he's good in the corner but in terms of actual training, nah.

Futch and Steward were true trainers. Anyone can be a trainer theses days. In fact many of the UK's so called 'top' never even boxed Pro - Gallagher, Booth, Ingle, Sims, McGuigan etc

Being a good trainer is overated. Having a relationship with a fighter, knowing them inside out and gaining their respect is more important than what they actually teach some times.

Exactly...notice nobody can actually say what's good about Booth as a trainer, they just like him

You can't really slang any trainers off because every fighters different, what you do with one fighter might not work with another, how many top trainers have brought a fighter through from debut to titles ?

I think the old fashioned trainers like Eddie Futch and Freddie Roach, Manny Steward, even Jimmy Tibbs, seem to be a dying breed these days what with nutritionists and fitness/conditioning coaches etc etc. A modern top class boxer should be in optimum shape going into the ring and its down to a good cuts man and/or motivator during fights nowadays. That 60 seconds in between the rounds is a golden period and its an art form to say the right words and help the fighter, some need reassurance, some need tough love.
