Roman Gonzalez To Continue Career, Eyes Kal Yafai's WBA Title
Former four division world champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez is planning to continue his career and his mind set on capturing another world title at 115-pounds.
The target for Gonzalez would be a match against WBA champion Kal Yafai (22-0, 14 KOs), who is promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom. Hearn is now making moves in the American market and Yafai is one of the boxers that he would like to get showcased on HBO. Yafai has a defense scheduled on October 28 against Sho Ishida.
HBO has interest in staging another event in 2018 which is going to place the spotlight on the super flyweights and Yafai is one of the boxers they are interested in showcasing on the network.
"I would love to fight for the WBA championship, and Akihiro Honda think it's what we will be looking for. We've already talked about that," said Chocolatito.
In addition, Chocolatito discarded for the moment another rematch against Rungvisai and said he would rather regain another world title in the division and then explore the idea of moving up yet again. Rungvisai had been ordered to face Juan Francisco Estrada in a mandatory fight.
"I would like to be champion in another organization to unify titles. It's a shame [that I lost to Sor Rungvisia], because if I would have won I could have faced Naoya Inoye in Japan to unify our belts."

Looks like Chocolatito is targetting the weaker champion.. Good thing Kal said he wanted to fight him, although at that time, Gonzalez held a world title and Kal wanted a unification.

If Hondas the guy advised him to keep moving up then This is the guy he shouldn't listen to. He must be skint to keep going after his last fight.

I think he also wanted to achieve a feat that his mentor had a chance to do but failed twice. He should've moved back down after Cuadras, then his trainer died. He wasn't given much time before being forced to fight Rungvisai..Tomasino wrote:If Hondas the guy advised him to keep moving up then This is the guy he shouldn't listen to. He says he can't go back down now..
HBO are interested, but i'm not sure where it will have more success, over in the USA or UK.. My guess is, it will possibly be on the next Supeerfly card scheduled for early next year. Can give Kal some exposure.

These plans gonna need rethinking when Yafai loses to Ishida;)

Interesting, was last fight just a blip, or is he done? I guess time will tell.

This would be a great fight. I really like Kal, he always looks like his improving, the power he carries at that weight is phenomenal, would still have him as an underdog though.

Do you rate Ishida ? don't know anything about him but know how deep that division isBoxing Prospect wrote:Carlos Blandon was blamed by Romans auntieTomasino wrote:If Hondas the guy advised him to keep moving up then This is the guy he shouldn't listen to. You could've got 20-1 for Gonzales to lose by ko the other week, the bookies are always giving out daft prices for the lower divisionsNaandrew wrote:Yafai is 1/16 to retain.littlepug wrote:Do you rate Ishida ? don't know anything about him but know how deep that division isBoxing Prospect wrote:

He's certainly a solid fighter, will have reach and height advantages over Yafai, and seems to have been a fighter HUGELY over-looked here. He should be the under dog but the odds of 8/1 are simply bizarre. Yafai has the better wins, with out a doubt, but Ishida has a solid record himself with good wins against the likes of Eaktwan BTU Ruaviking, Petchbarngborn Kokietgym, Yohei Tobe and Ryuchi Funai. He comes from the Ioka gym, so is well schooled and has top training partners (Ioka, Nakatani, Miyazaki). He has history going against him (no Japanese fighter has ever won a world title in Europe), but he's a very live under-doglittlepug wrote:Do you rate Ishida ? don't know anything about him but know how deep that division isBoxing Prospect wrote:Carlos Blandon was blamed by Romans auntieTomasino wrote:If Hondas the guy advised him to keep moving up then This is the guy he shouldn't listen to. Cheers, the Japanese lad is insanely tall and if he has a decent jab then that 8-1 is a stealBoxing Prospect wrote:He's certainly a solid fighter, will have reach and height advantages over Yafai, and seems to have been a fighter HUGELY over-looked here. Hopefully they mess up the Ancajas Conlan odds.

Phenomenal? Sarcasm? I'm a fan too. Slick looking boxer, not a puncher.fightfan95 wrote:This would be a great fight. I really like Kal, he always looks like his improving, the power he carries at that weight is phenomenal, would still have him as an underdog though.

As with so many dudes at 115 I suspect his size some would give Roman problems. He's a decent mover too so difficult to cut the ring onSaadOffTheDeck wrote:Phenomenal? Sarcasm? I'm a fan too.
