Pound per Pound Best Chin in History

Post by elmersalsa »

Who had the best chin in boxing history according to the records of some fighters? I am talking about guys that fought at the highest level and quality of opposition.

A few guys worthy of mention here.

Maxie Rosenbloom ~ 272 fights, 39 losses, only 2 came by KO, and one of those KO's was a result of Low blows, and his corner getting in the ring to complain. The other came very late in his career when he would've been well past his best, and suffered a lot of wear and tear.

Sanderline Williams ~ 40 fights, 15 losses, only 1 came by KO. He went the distance with big punchers or big names such as James Toney, Gerald McClellan, Nigel Benn, Iran Barkley, Merqui Sosa, Herol Graham and Frank Tate.

Also...Oliver McCall. I've never seen the man hurt, and he's faced some of the biggest hitters you could possibly throw a man in the ring with.

Hagler for me, I consider Hearns the biggest p4p puncher and he broke his hand on Marvin with his best punch. He took a half step back and people call that stunned.

The commentary was terrible in this regard. Screaming Haglers hurt over and over

James Toney. Former middleweight, he was in terrible shape against big punching heavyweight Hasim Rahman, but took all his punches like it was nothing. Rahman, who knocked HUGE heavyweight Lennox Lewis out cold with a single punch, couldn't hurt former middleweight Toney at all.

On the money.

Toney has taken punches from guys weighing from about 150+ lbs to 250 lbs+ has only taken a couple of counts & never been KOd.

He has to have the best p4p chin of all time.

I picked the great Kid Gavilan. He had 130 fights without being knocked out in an era of tough fighters.

It's cute that Duran made the list. :D

How about Mike Gibbons? Never stopped in well over 100 fights.
Gene Tunney only got knocked down once in over 80 fights. Anyone want to guess who that was against? :D

Gavilan was knocked down and hurt by Carmen Basilio -- who wasn't a big puncher...

Oliver McCall was never down, never blinked... Vitali Klitschko was never staggered, hurt or knocked down... Mike Gibbons never hurt or stopped or down... Eder Jofre was never stopped or down... Calos Monzon was knocked down in his 99th and 100th fights, but I thought his chin was real good anyway... You can tell who had a great chin, but knowing who had the best chin is impossible. There're a dozen guys who had great chins.

If somebody is clear as a bell after a long ring career -- and they hold down important jobs like Eder Jofre did -- he had to do a lot of public speaking as Mayor of San Paulo -- obviously their chins were very good.. If their mental faculties are impaired in any way, obviously they didn’t absorb the punishment as well.. A lot of guys sound terrific the day they retire. But talk to them 20, 30, or 40 years later and see how they sound. Sometimes you see that they’re obviously having problems – sound like they have a head cold or whatever. Just a few are still clear as a bell.

James Toney deserves a solid mention. The dude had a great chin, and went through the weights showing it. Yes, didn't get hit really hard and clean too much, but when he did he took it so well.

McCall was almost impervious to even a reaction from a head shot.

Too true; McCallum is definitely in this conversation.

No disrespect Kalan but I don't take that clip from some numpty with a webcam and a poor quality mic any more seriously than do the resident " experts " here. You know the ones that should never, ever be taken seriously at ANY cost.

Self opinionated nobodies one and all. However I do trust an article in Boxing Weekly some time back which claimed McCallum bumped into Leonard on a stairway in Caesars Palace, Vegas in the mid 80's, and asked why he was frozen out by the " fab four " To which Leonard is alleged to have replied something along the lines of.

" I can't speak for Marvin, but for myself, Tommy, and Duran I'd say it is all down to risk, versus reward "

The reasoning being that Hagler was, and always had been a committed Middle, whereas the other 3 could easily go up and down to suit the purse bids on offer.
What a wee shame for you, you old wrinkly, smelly, disgusting, isolated, ugly, friendless cûnt.

I don't believe that story actually. Who gave anybody that verbatim quote??? McCallum??? Nope -- and it sure wasn't Leonard.. No bystander heard it, because Leonard would say something like. "I don't control Boxing. We'll see what happens in the future." He wouldn't speak for Hearns or Duran. I think McCallum would ask Leonard why HE wouldn't fight -- like he asked Hagler... He wouldn't let Leonard share the blame.

I don't think any reward would be worth getting the living shiit knocked out of them by Mike McCallum... That's the real reason they ducked him.

Norton was a big banger?????? Hmmm...you should have told Foreman, Shavers, and Cooney that -- they would have been more fearful of the blooping swinger.. Besides, anyone who gets knocked down and hurt by 190-pound Sonny Banks... 185-pound Henry Cooper... and 205-pound Joe Frazier doesn't have a great chin.

Ray Mercer had an invincible chin... He wanted to fight Mike Tyson who seemed to be intimidated by Ray Mercer... Mercer fought Lennox Lewis, Tommy Morrison, Francesco Damiani, and Evander Holyfield in his prime... He took brutal shots right on the chin and was never decked by a head shot til he was 41.. He was an MMA fighter til past the age of 50.

BTW, he's fine... All those head shots he took? ... Didn't to a thing to him.

Oldie, you are a true Walter Mitty. If posting on this board is the time of your life??? You need help in a major way.

You're not living well. A believer in fantasies describes you to a T. You believe you're the smartest guy here and everyone else is an ignorant fool. That way, regardless of the nonsense you post, you're free to blast everyone as a intolerable retrograde from the Pleistocene Epoch.
