Pound per Pound Greatest Inside Fighter in History

Post by elmersalsa »

Who in your view was the best fighter that could fight well inside? Fighting on the inside is a LOST ART in boxing nowadays. I mean, today's boxers can't fight and are petrified to get hit.

Kinda odd to include Salvador Sanchez and Eder Jofre on the list ahead of him definitely. Salvador Sanchez was a great fighter, but his primary weapons were his jab, and straight right hand from range, not in close. I mean I know he could handle himself on the inside, but I don't think of him as an "Inside Fighter"

Henry Armstrong is almost certainly the answer to this question.

Very good choice. I forgot about him. Was he the best inside fighter in your book?

I don't remember everyone perfectly and I don't think i've seen Jofre fight so it was between Frazier and Duran I went with Duran.

Salvador Sanchez and Eder Jofre were terrific inside game fighters. They were complete fighters that could do it all.

Another great inside fighter was Carlos Palomino.

Duran was better defensively. Prime Duran against dejesus 3, palomino and Leonard 1woukd get my vote. Gil is right that Sanchez doesn't belong. He wouldn't be top 100, much less top 10. Beau jack is someone much better than sal inside.

Smokin' got murdered by a man he couldn't even move inside on... Salvador Sanchez never got murdered.. and he ripped undefeated Wilfredo Gomez out with inside work... Vasyl Lomachenko is a candidate...he throws such a great variety of tricky combinations inside and avoids the incoming..

Qawi was better than Frazier on the inside. So were McCallum and Starling. At 140 only, Ricky Hatton deserves a shout.

It's just my opinion. Sanchez was a great counterpuncher and also a great inside fighter. That's not ridiculous.

Having him a top 10 all time infighter is completely ridiculous. Not the only one on your horrible list, but the most egregious. Anyone that has seen Sanchez and Jack fight would laugh in your face.

Seeing is believing. Many infighters were better than Jack.

Ike Williams was a more skilled infighter and all around boxer than Beau Jack.. Williams had an 82% winning percentage vs 75% for Jack.. Jack was a crude head knocking swinger like Henry Armstrong. He out-Armstronged Henry Armstrong when they fought. Williams evaded the majority of Jack’s loaded swings and brutal head-ramming, which is illegal as Hell under Queensberry Rules, and nailed him with brutal body shots, short hooks, and uppercuts.. Many referees allowed you to get away with flagrant pushing, shoving, and head-knocking in the 1950’s, but Jack was never able to beat Ike Williams in 4 fights.. In their 4th and final bout Jack was battered into a stoppage while Williams asked the ref “Are you going to stop it or what?” That was the last fight of their career for both of them. Williams said he was disgusted with Boxing.

Go to 11:52 of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3orvyeMu4Qand see Williams evade Jack’s efforts and smash him with a 6-shot combo. He hurts him badly and finishes him off shortly after.

:TU: he is an amusing character. He rates Hank the goat but he doesn't measure up here. I guess it was his defense.

Be serious... How skilled was LaMotta??? ... People pretend infighting isn't a skill game -- as if it's all about having short arms and punching power.. First of all -- LaMotta had a 28% KO ratio.. Secondly, he was taken out by Danny Nardico, a little known fighter who knocked LaMotta off his pins.. LaMotta lost a bunch of other fights. Throughout his career his record was dotted with losses, and his skills were never breathtaking.

Salvador Sanchez had incredible skills and a KO ratio of 70%... Wilfredo Gomez was undefeated in 33 fights -- and was the shorter fighter with the shorter reach -- and he ended his career with a KO ratio of 88%... But Sanchez was able to outfight Gomez on the inside and knock the ATG out.. It's a great study in slipping and ripping ... and staying on your world class opponent til you flatten him in the early rounds, mid rounds, or late rounds.. When he starts flagging like Gomez did you can't let up for a second.

Sometimes Kalan, you know what you are talking about. Sometimes you don't. But in this instance about the great Salvador Sanchez' inside game skills, you're correct 100%
