Tall fighters with short reach

Post by scorpio83 »

Was there something usual about tall fighters in every division that may have T-Rex's arms? For example, in the heavyweight division, Alejandro Lavorante who fought both Muhammad Ali and Archie Moore and even fought contenders like Zora Folley, stood 6'3 1/2", but Lavorante had a reach of 73. Another heavyweight Ed "Gunboat" Smith had a reach of 72 despite the fact he stood 6'2". Former Featherweight Champion Eusebio Pedroza have a reach of 68 1/2 despite standing at 5'8" or 5'9". Can you find any tall with an unusual shorter reach?

I don't believe Wepner had a 72" reach.. Sometimes people measure reach knuckle to knuckle... That easily knocks 10 inches off your reach, depending on how long your fingers are.. Diego Corrales had about the shortest arms I've ever seen for his height.. That's why he tended to trade punches rather than box..

Marciano had very short arms.. Tua sure did.. Tyson had short arms.. Frazier did.. Usually it's short fighters who have shorter arms for their height..

I tend to notice long arms like Connie Hawkins and Grace Kelly -- and not so much short arms because so many people have them.

Because "Midget Wrestling" used to be a big thing in the 50's and 60's I always thought midgets had really big heads and bodies for their height and stubby little limbs that made them appear extremely funny looking.. But I guess the term midget is really for normally proportioned people and midget wrestlers were really "dwarfs." ... That wasn't as catchy a name for them so they became midgets.

I've never seen "Midget Boxing" ... I wonder how that would go over.

I read somewhere that a man who stands 6 ft 1" tall has an average of a 73 reach.
(Which was just about Jack Johnson's height and reach too)

If you're 6 feet or taller your reach generally corresponds to your height... but if you're 6'4" or taller your reach may be several inches longer than your height.. Sonny Liston was kind of freaky looking.. He was only 6'1" but his reach was 81 inches.. His arms were not only long, but big.

I laughed when I saw the look on Floyd Patterson's face as they faced off.. Patterson tried so hard not to look scared...like it's another day at the office.

You are right. Wepner has a 78 or 79 inches in reach because if his reach was 72, then both of his arms would reach down to his hip and if anyone look at the Ali fight, Wepner's arms reach his thighs. I believed that some of the measurements of height and reach may be inconsistent. :TU:

George Foreman once discribed Sonny Liston as having "extra long arms that reached all the way down to his knees".

I don't care what the stat says... From just eyeballing his arms to his height? ... They're short.. Floyd was way shorter and reached him easily.

shoulder width is part of reach you know. you could have short arms but not a short reach.

But what is his arm length? Corrales shoulders could've added into that factor. Mayweather surely has longer arms than Corrales and mainly anyone else he's fought. His arms from fist to armpit are 26 inches long.

Not at all...Because that's his reach...shorter even than his height.. Reach measures wingspan not arm length lol.

Incorrect. 178cm is round 70 inches.

Better title to this "boxers with reach is shorter than their height".

Many GOSSIPS said, "reach is nearly proportional as the height".

*A good example of boxer(s) with "reach is nearly proportional as the height":

Juan Manuel Marquez had a height of 5-feet 7-inches (170 cm) and had a reach of 67-inches (170 cm).

**Some examples of boxers with reach is shorter than their height:

Rocky Marciano had a height of 5-feet 10-inches (178 cm) and had a reach of 67-inches (170 cm). That's 5-feet 7-inches arm span. His reach is 3-inches shorter than his height.

Vasyl Lomachenko had a height is 5-feet 7-inches (170 cm) and had a reach of 65-inches (165 cm). That's 5-feet 5-inches. His reach is 2-inches shorter than his height.

***While there are numerous boxers out there who had a reach longer than their height.

Floyd Mayweather Jr had a height of 5-feet 8-inches (173 cm) and had a reach of 72-inches (183 cm). That's 6-feet arm span. He has a reach 4-inches longer than his height.

Lennox Lewis had a height of 6-feet 5-inches (196 cm) and had a reach of 85-inches (213 cm). That's a 7-feet 1-inch arm span. He has a reach 8-inch longer than his height.

I'm 5'10" with a 75" reach.

So you can't really argue about how height equates to reach or hand size and foot size, etc. Tommy Burns at 5'7" had the same reach as me.
