Lewis took everything Vitali had that night and was still standing upright and firing back with just as many punches. It showed Vitali didn't hit as hard as some like to think. That along with not being able to stop old man Briggs doesn't sit too well on his record. A record with no real victory over a level B heavyweight on it, let alone A level.
Could it be that Samuel Peter or Chris Arreola are Vitali's best wins? It's a shame he never got to face anything like an elite heavy after old man Lewis. Would have cleared up a lot of these questions about how good he might have been.
I've always fancied a few names in modern heavyweight history would give Vitali all he could handle. Thomas, Ruddock, Mercer being a handful of names. I could easily see Vitali dropping a decision or two against such fighters, prime for prime.
What comes to Mercer he gave Lennox one helluva fight but was crushed by Wladimir.

BUT,
Lewis then smashed a straight right into his face and opened the WORST cut I have ever seen in all my years as a boxing fan, the cut was so bad that the swab disappeared inside it.
Lewis then bust his mouth and tongue open, he was a mess.
Lewis then started walking through Vitali's punches.
And now for the 'coupe de grace'....
Watch the very end of the last round, with exactly 14 seconds left in the round Lewis landed a sneaky right to Vitali's temple and in an instant he was gone, and I mean GONE, In an instant he turned to jelly and draped himself over Lewis like wet washing, he was done, Lewis knew it, Vitali knew it and afterwards Vitali made a big show and started acting up in the same way that Razor Ruddock did against Tyson & Morrison, and Carl Williams against Tyson & Morrison after getting fairly beaten.
This was an old Lewis he was smart to retire, a younger Lewis would have turned Vitali into Michael Grant.
Cuts are part of boxing, like Henry Cooper Vitali didn't have a champions skin.
As for Wlad v Mercer? Mercer was shot to shit by this point, hell Briggs stopped him also.
