Amir Khan Plans To Open His Own Boxing Club

Amir Khan plans to open up his own boxing club in Bolton.

The 19-year-old Olympic silver medalist expects his new gym will be ready later this year and will cater for both professional and amateur boxers.

Amir has bought premises in Prince Street, which he plans to convert into a gym and offices, and will use as his training base in future.

The Bolton teenager, who will make only his seventh professional fight in Belfast next month, currently trains in Salford at his coach Oliver Harrison's gym.

"There is no problem about Oliver moving to Bolton to train Amir," said his father Shajaad Khan. "Also there is a threat that Oliver's gym may have to close in the next couple of years. Amir will be happier training in Bolton as it involves less travelling.

"We have decided to run an amateur section because there is a great demand in Bolton and hopefully it will get kids off the street. I know there are clubs at Tonge and the Lads Club but this will provide another option.

"Amir is very keen on the idea of an amateur club and says he may like to train youngsters himself when he retires. We certainly won't be running the amateur club to make money, it is about putting something into the community."

He said that although his younger son Haroon would train at the new club, the 14-year-old would still be a member of Bury ABC and Mike Jelley, who also trained Khan in his amateur days, would still be his coach.

Amir and his father travelled to Pakistan this week to return to the area devastated by the earthquake. The boxer has raised money for Oxfam and was on a fact-finding trip to see how the money was being spent.

Nice to hear that he is already thinking of putting something back into the sport, though hope he doesn't get too distracted by too many outside interests.

What a swanker,just another conman who looking to get a kighthood on his hype

Lets just hope someone makes this joker fight a puncher....but there`sto much money to be made out the british public for that

It is nice to hear well known people say things like the Khans are saying

But...

Shouldn`t he be concentrating 100% on his boxing?

He is linked to so many different things already...now this Oxfam thing.

If he was at the top of the game already and could see the end in sight then I could understand him developing outside interests, but the thing is he so far has done nothing at all...except get an enormous amount of hype that in every likelyhood will be impossible for him to live up to...let us be honest he is expected to be another De La Hoya....and we have never ever had a British boxer of that standing.

The people around him should pull him in, and cut off all these outside distactions.

It is good that he is trying to do stuff in the community.But as you say,he is only 19!!!! Surely,all he should be thinking about is his own career at the moment,focusing on himslef and nothing else?

What he is trying to do is something that fighters consider doing once they are retired or nearing the end of their career.

It is good for british boxing that Amir open his gyms for public for free!

Amir is training hard.. he is not doing all the work of organisation stuff. his managers do all that job for him..

There is no pressure on Amir.

Good point. His money will be funding it but i can see him having someone running it for him. Nothing bad about this at all.

Opening a new boxing gym for public is very good thing and good for british boxing.

I think it's excellent that he is wanting to put something back into the community already. I'm sure he won't be getting too involved in the actualy running of it all, his dad and management team will handle all of that.

Good point.

He needs to concentrate on his career. He's far too young to be worrying about boxing clubs & other distractions.

I don't want him to go down the Audley Harrison road, because Amir has genuine talent & looks like he could amount to something.

If his name can do some good for his community and for any charity he is invloved in then I think it is great, there are many that could have in the past and either havnt or wouldnt.

I cant see that he is running any of this stuff, I am pretty sure he is in the gym while his admin team are running the other side, dont worry chaps Amir will be doing his job.

Thats good and moving his training base to his home town makes sence too. Seems like a nice kid to be honnest just not the best driver ;). Eubank has his own gym too if I remember correctly
