Boxing writer states that Badou Jack does not get respect and attention he deserves

Post by RScarf1 »

An article on Fight Hype states that Badou Jack is being overlooked by media and fans and that he is having a career worthy of the same popularity as Lomachenko and Golovkin. I understand he has won belts in two weight classes, but I believe he needs to beat the best in his division in order to be mentioned among the pound for pound elite. He needs to beat either Kovalev or Stevenson. I don't think Jack is being ignored based on who he has fought. He got a draw versus DeGale. He dominated Cleverly who retired after the fight. What do you all think? Is Jack really deserving of more praise? Maybe this writer is just biased.

Jacks a good fight and impressed vs clev

But he didn't unify vs degale and he doesn't hold a proper world title at 175. So rightly his name shouldn't go alongside golovkin etc

I agree with you. The same writer used to write that Crawford was not getting enough recognition. This was before he defeated Indongo. I think Jack needs to beat either Kovalev or Stevenson before he can be considered elite.

Does David Lemieux receive more plaudits than Badou Jack? Has the Canadian achieved more than the Swede?

It seems fairly obvious that there are inferior fighters, regardless of weight class, that receive more praise than Badou Jack currently does.

The Swede may not have earned a right to be classed amongst high-profile names like Golovkin, Lomachenko and Canelo, but it seems that only the hard-core boxing fraternity are aware of his talents, with other less-deserving fighters being lavished with praise by mainstream casuals.

The writer seems to think that black boxers are not given the same attention as white European or Russian boxers. He has written previously about Crawford not getting the recognition like Golovkin and Lomachenko. I think it has to do with who Crawford has beaten, so he will get a lot of respect if he defeats the best welterweights such as Thurman and Spence.

its true that lately non-white boxers dont usually get as much hype for the same type of accomplishments. at least if forums are anything to go by. look at 130. youd hardly know that a guy like berchelt exists. and even corrales has better 130 win that loma does. yet somehow loma already in p4p top 3s. golovkin is very good but the hype was unreal. talk of him destroying atgs and excellent historical fighters. dudes second best win is over david lemieux ffs. barely beat jacobs. hit easily by a number of mediocre opponents.

on the other side, race has also led to the strange black fandom of an unseen/unheard advisor. you get the sense that the ppl who worship haymon take his success as a collective victory for the black community.

i think that is rubbish, i rate jack as one of the best in his profession i was gutted ward retired as i wanted to see jack have a crack at him , but then jack never rolled over groves or de gale, not sure if i class triple g as white ,more mongolian asian don't really care either that man is an absolute beast, words don't do him justice if only everyone boxed like him ,lomachenko is brilliant to watch with his skills but he is a small weight he is hard to get people to watch him, but once scene you keep coming back , crawford is my boy who i told everyone before the burns fight , that he was the next big thing, until i saw spence then fought man that will be a hell of a fight . some fighters sell more than others because look at all of the above , who remembers any of them talking ? dereck chisora or haye are far more famous than them ,personality people

To be fair, going by the seemingly-common opinions of those that frequent this forum, black boxers generally don’t receive the same attention as Caucasians.

Terence Crawford himself did publish a tweet about the lack of exposure the network gave for his bout against Julius Indongo in comparison to others... and if you do some research, you'll know what I mean when I use the word "others".

Crawford will get the attention if he beats better opponents. I wanted Jack to fight Ward, but now that he retired, Jack needs to beat the other best at light heavyweight before he gets the kind of press coverage that Golovkin has received.

Golovkin and Lomachenko are not trash talkers. They get publicity because of their boxing. They are top 5 pound for pound. Crawford is too, but he needs to beat better opponents and he will get recognition just as black boxers in the past did like Thomas Hearns and Evander Holyfield. I think there are boxing fans and writers who prefer certain races to be top pound for pound, but I don't think there is widespread racism in boxing. Boxers who win legitimately against good competition will get respect and recognition no matter what race or nationality they are.

Is that the site that seems to have a close relationship with Floyd, who in turn promotes Badou Jack?

Depending on how you perceive the level of popularity, I'd say not many boxers get enough plaudits. No one knows Rigo, Klitschko got shit for being boring, Jack is someone I see as a possible star, but he's had bad luck and a lack of great promotion as far as I'm aware. Think he'll find it tough to beat Beterbiev, Kovalev or Gvodzyk, but if he can, he'll get a lot of credit.

Bingo. But let's use race as the scapegoat, since some people will never get over it. Boxing does attract racists, but that isn't affecting the general population perspective. A fighter either has to be showcased at the right moment, or simply have that x factor to be a star. Truth is nobody cares about boxing except for a small amount of nerds.

Yes. The editor/owner of the site is a friend of Floyd.

LOL, I guess we're all nerds then on this forum. I was also a comic book collector when I was a teenager. Before comic books went mainstream because of the superhero movies, girls used to make fun of me when I wore a Batman T-shirt. Now, females dress up in scantily clad costumes at comic cons and call it cosplay. When I went to comic book conventions in the early '90s, it was a sausage fest. There were hardly any women there.

Yeah, and he was supposed to fight Bivol, but he vacated his WBA belt and avoided fighting him.

I don't fault him for that as Bivol was of the high risk/low reward variety, and I don't doubt that Badou Jack can get a bigger fight like Adonis Stevenson or someone like that instead which would be both more significant, and less risky I think.

It's just smart management really. Can't fault him for it.

It'd be annoying if he still hasn't fought a meaningful fight a year or so from now though.

The geezer needs a big fight now. He's beaten some top guys and has a title. His team need to find that opponent that will bring a good payday and recognition. Now's the time.

I don't buy into it either, but that is what the writer of the article has written about a few times before and is basically inferring with this article. Jack is a top 10 light heavyweight, but he hasn't beaten anyone to be deserving of the attention that the pound for pound top 10 usually get. The writer compares Jack to Golovkin, Lomachenko, and Alvarez and asks why is Jack not being mentioned alongside them. He mentions the guys he has beaten lately and the draw with DeGale. He didn't win versus DeGale. By this writer's logic, we should be praising DeGale more.

And as good as he looked vs cleverly. Kovalev has destroyed cleverly as a top level boxer already imo.

I like jack and I used to think he’s underrated, but ironically putting him alongside golovkin is actually overrating him.

Boxers get rated on ability and sometimes how good your promoter is. Not colour

I go to the comic cons now. I'm just too old for my Robin costume unless I want to be known as Robin the receding hairline wonder.
