Griffith was gunning hard for a 4th fight with Benvenuti before Monzon beat him... He said "I'm the only Middleweight in the world who can beat Benvenuti."
After his first fight with Monzon (Carlos was terrible in the rematch, which was a dull fight and Monzon called "My worst fight ever") Griffith was very impressed after being stopped under a hail of punches.. He said "Carlos Monzon is a better fighter than Nino Benvenuti ever was."
Everyone has a bad fight... For Monzon it was his rematch with Griffith. He was having a lot of run ins with his wife at the time. They would go at it and she shot him once. That didn't do him a lot of good. He probably deserved it though -- if he hit her.

That's not true Kalan you know it mate Monzon you love him that's the truth
I don't love anybody who's not a close personal friend... I love my relatives and friends like everyone else does... It is true that Monzon's wife shot him.

This interview with Guillermo Vilas tells a lot about Monzon, he almost fought Hagler! Plans were discussed but Monzon decided he had lost his edge and fitness.

Those Monzon-Valdez fights were actually closer than Golovkin-Canelo... And Valdez wasn't nearly as big or as good as Canelo.
Canelo won't end up in the HOF - RV did. / Monzon (for what it is worth) won both of those close fights, GGG suffered a draw.
Yep, the Kalan's of the future will claim that GGG can't be all that great, otherwise he surely would have won this fight. It was a draw, and that's that.
But somehow the Kalan's of today appear to rationalize this outcome. Surely It's become clear as of the last two weeks that GGG is no Valero.
BuzzBox, please stop with your nonsensical dumbness... Did I ever claim the Hagler-Antoufermo 1 was anything but a real win for Hagler and NOT a draw??? ... Did I ever claim that CJ Ross wasn't OTL when she scored Mayweather-Canelo a draw??? ... Did I ever claim that Lewis-Holyfield 1 was anything but a dominant win for Lewis and NOT a draw??? ... Did I ever claim Whitaker-Chavev was anything but a dominant with for Whitaker and NOT a draw??? ... I see fights as they are... You imagine things I never said---such as your version of my views on any subject---and say "Kalan really meant the opposite when he posted this."
Who's the person on this board who's the most critical of Boxing judges? ... which is Boxing's biggest problem.
I think Canelo was protected by corrupt officials in the Golovkin fight... He's been strategically matched and that's why the GGG fight didn't happen 2 years ago.. But he fought Floyd, Lara, and beat 4-Division champ Miguel Cotto.. He definitely has more championship fights against better opponents than Valdes.. And definitely has the edge on Valdes in boxing and punching finesse and defense..
Valdes has that spectacular 1-punch KO of Benny Briscoe with one of the hardest left hooks I've very seen thrown by a Middleweight. Briscoe went the distance with Monzon, Hagler and a lot of other great fighters. Valdes decked Monzon too.. Valdes still has those 8 losses and could be tagged up.. I still like Canelo in that match-up because he's a bigger, stronger, smarter, quicker, and better defensively.
