De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
On Monday, three division world champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) explained on social media that he rejected a potential multi-million dollar deal to fight Miguel Cotto on December 2 - because the agreement would have to include a multi-fight promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions, who work with
“Not bad but I’m doing better on my own,” Garcia tweeted Monday. “Why not cotto only and no further commitment?”
As it stands right now, Cotto is close to finalizing a deal to fight welterweight contender Sadam Ali, as the headline fight of an HBO televised card from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
According to Garcia, beyond a fight with Cotto and WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares, Golden Boy would not be able to get him the big fights with other key opponents - handled by adviser Al Haymon or Las Vegas based promoter Top Rank.
Garcia would rather remain a free agent with no promotional ties - allowing him to fight anyone and on any network.
“I took a step back, looked at everything and was like, ‘They can’t guarantee me [those] opponents. It’s only Cotto and Linares. So how much can they guarantee me — purses and names?’” Garcia said to the Los Angeles Times.
“Good proposal, but not exciting enough to jump on.”
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya feels Garcia has made a big mistake in rejecting their proposal and should have come on board.
In the opinion of De La Hoya, Garcia - and every other fighter, needs a promoter.
“A fighter needs a promoter who knows how to guide his career — what the next step and move is,” De La Hoya told The Times. “You need a team, a partner … Anthony Joshua has a promoter [England’s Eddie Hearn], and we promote Canelo [Alvarez].

cotto and linares seems pretty damn good, no? maybe mikey has too high expectations for what he can do w/o promoter deal.

Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
Mikey Garcia is an Al Haymon fighter and GBP attempted (and failed miserably) to sue the PBC chief last year. So Haymon is unlikely to have been excited about or would have endorsed the prospect of potentially having to endure a professional working relationship with his old nemesis.
Golden Boy Promotions also attempted to sign Mikey Garcia last year, but he signed with Haymon instead.
His reasons for rejecting GBP’s offer can’t have changed much within the span of twelve months or so. He now has Al Haymon to guide his career.
The talent pool of legitimate marquee names amongst GBP’s stable of fighters is pretty thin and there are more long-term opportunities for Garcia not being contractually-tied to GBP & HBO.
Also, I read an article by Stephen "Breadman" Edwards last week, where he claimed that the “reason why so many fighters were operating without a promoter” was because they “were making more money on the license fees because promoters were not taking those big cuts of the monies.”

It reminds me of the Pimp vs. Prostitute relationship illustrated in the show "The Deuce" currently on HBO. It's funny and startling at how much a pimp and Oscar have in common.Ruthless-RKO wrote:On Monday, three division world champion Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) explained on social media that he rejected a potential multi-million dollar deal to fight Miguel Cotto on December 2 - because the agreement would have to include a multi-fight promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions, who work with

Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
Mikey said that the details of the purse for the proposed Cotto fight was one of the main reasons for not signing with GBP, was due to Oscar De La Hoya quoting figures (to I think Lance Pugmire - LA journalist) that wasn’t actually presented to Garcia.
Mikey claimed that had GBP actually presented him with the purse totals that were disclosed to the media, then he may have seriously considered their offer. Garcia said that Oscar’s claims about these amounts were never communicated to him when they made their offer.
Mikey Garcia didn’t want to “bash on Golden Boy or say that they’re lying or disclose numbers that he wasn’t supposed to”, as they were part of private conversations, so he put out a “safe” press release explaining his refusal for their offer instead.
Mikey Garcia said that he was told that a potential bout between himself and Jorge Linares would not considered “off the table” by GBP due to his refusal to agree to their terms for the Cotto bout.

I dunno, Danny Garcia is a little small to be fighting Miguel Cotto. Oh, you mean Mikey Garcia? Okay, Mikey Garcia could easily handle Abner Cotto. WAIT, YOU MEAN MIKEY GARCIA VS MIGUEL COTTO?!?! They're like 24 weight divisions apart! This match-up is preposterous.

Translation: I know Al Haymon is going to protect me so I'd be stupid to go fight Cotto and take that risk. I know Al Haymon is desperate and he's going to protect my record for more years when hopefully he will land back on his feet with his big loud mouth fraud Wilder.

Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
That might have been me. He wasn't when he came back and I didn't know he signed with him.
Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
not on this forum. kind of been confusing with mikey.
Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
I’d say it’s a fairly decent short term opportunity for garcia
Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
There's plenty decent fights for Garcia at his own weight to be fair. I think he'd have wasted Cotto but personally.

He is not with Al, but he is saying that he only fights on Showtime. What kind of "free agent" is that ?jamamb wrote:is mikey with al? i thought so but then someone told me i was wrong.
Re: De La Hoya Feels Garcia Made Mistake in Rejecting Cotto Deal
Mikey Garcia is gonna wind up being one of those "What might've been" Boxing stories. All the potential he has won't be realized because he keeps pricing himself out of the big opportunities. Soon his phone won't be ringing with offers for them anymore.
