George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
George Groves believes that Gennady Golovkin should not risk moving up to a higher weight division. Groves has sparred Golovkin in the past but the Briton, a world champion at 168lbs, doesn’t expect a super-fight with Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez any time soon.
“I think certainly Alvarez is too small and Golovkin is too small. What he does well, he’s getting on a bit but he’s got so much power. He’ll lose an edge to the power coming up. The big guys that he’s fought lately, he hasn’t quite had the success with, like [Danny] Jacobs. So it’s like anything: the bigger you are, the better you are at absorbing a shot. He’s going to fight big super-middleweights, 13 plus stone, his power isn’t going to be the same. He doesn’t need to. He’s a big name at middleweight, there’s enough fights out there for him at middleweight. If I was him I’d stay there,” George said.
The boxing world is waiting to see whether to see whether Canelo and Golovkin will agree to a rematch after their controversial draw in Las Vegas.
“When the fight was made I thought Canelo would be a little too slick for Golovkin, I thought Golovkin dipped just because he hadn’t been tested over the years. I saw in the weigh-in that Golovkin looked in real good shape, better shape than I’d seen him recently. Probably up for it much more, knew it was a bigger payday, a bigger challenge, opens up the door for some other bigger fights. That was motivation for it,” Groves added.
Just a question. If they were to fight today in the next year at 168 pounds.. Who wins?

I don't know if Groves is being genuine. Is he simply saying this so that GGG is not a threat to the division that he currently wants to run?
He does seem rather fond of GGG.

I don't think Groves beats Eubank or possibly even Callum smith, ignoring the Golovkin talk.Ruthless-RKO wrote:I don't know if Groves is being genuine. Is he simply saying this so that GGG is not a threat to the division that he currently wants to run?

Groves spoke the truth GGG isn't a big middle weight who relies on his power so fighting bigger boxer will not help him

Golovkin is big enough and has a good enough chin to repeat what Froch did twice. Didn't he already punish Groves in Big Bear?

Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
Golovkin most likely stops Groves in the mid-to-late rounds, though a decision wouldn't be out of the question. Of course he is right that 168lb fighters will absorb his power better, but it's possible GGG's power will slightly increase when he's able to weigh in at 168lb, plus he will have slightly larger, slightly slower targets to hit, so I think he wouldn't be much less effective at the higher weight.

Where did GGG come from? Hasn't he got enough to talk about with the tournament? A journalist probably brought up GGG

Golovkin-Froch would have been the fight. Two guys with a freakish ability to absorb big shots. It would have ended up being an insane slug fest I think.boxing_rocks wrote:Golovkin is big enough and has a good enough chin to repeat what Froch did twice. Didn't he already punish Groves in Big Bear?

I don't think that GGG would be successful at 168 at this stage of his career. He's a heavy hitter, but not heavy enough, especially in his most recent outings against top level opponents to cope with fighters used to taking shots off bigger men.

Apparently ggg bust his ribs sparring some years back.
Groves could take a decision if he fought the perfect fight.
He could also get knocked out

Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
I don't think GGG needs to be "warned" to stay Middleweight since there are currently bigger money fights awaiting him there at 160 anyway.
GGG would kick Groves' ass.

Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
There is some true truth to Groves' words.
GGG's power would be less effective against big 168lb-ers... and when combined with his advanced years, in comparison to the young super-middleweights, means that he would likely struggle against inferior fighters, for precisely those reasons.
There is no immediate compelling reason for Gennady to make the jump to 168lbs yet. And he shouldn't even consider it until he'll likely receive a big payday against either James DeGale or the winner of the WBSS.

Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
I agree that Golovkin shouldn't move up to 168 because he's a natural Middleweight, but Groves certainly isn't anyone to worry about. There are tougher fights at 160 than Groves at 168.
Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
..Groves is neither renowned for his power nor for his chin..will also depend on their actual weight on fight night...
Re: George Groves warns Gennady Golovkin to stay at middleweight
Groves has faded as well, he is not the same guy that was dropping Froch and looking the goods. He should hope GGG stays down at 160lbs, because that match up doesn't favor George at all. George will exchange often enough to get nailed.
