Leo Santa Cruz vs Chris Avalos

Post by handsofstone »

Santa Cruz defends his WBA Featherweight title against former Frampton victim Avalos this Saturday live on Sky, is this the worst match up of 2017 so far? Cant be many worse, Santa Cruz was supposed to rematching Mares then all of a sudden both guys are fighting on the same bill against inferior opposition, effing liberty from all involved, its not as if if we need to let Santa Cruz/Mares 2 "marinate", both are as seasoned as they'll ever be and we've already seen it before so no pudenda even that arsed about it despite their 1st fight being a cracker

Avalos isn't even in that great form , he's coming of cuts win but has been stopped a couple of times since the KO loss to Frampton, embarrassing defence from LSC especially when you consider he fought excellent in the rematch with Frampton last time out and showed us some new skills and boxing savvy most never knew he had, Santa Cruz also fought Kiko after Frampton beat him twice, who will be next for LSC after this, Molitor??

Avalos is always game but its been proven time and again he's not championship level class, god awful matchmaking, LSC has had plenty of patsys during his reigns at BW and SBW so no idea why anyone would find this fight acceptable

Mares defends his Regular strap against Gutierrez on the undercard, I'm assuming Gutierrez has recovered from his shower mishap

Ramirez/Demarco is the only moderately interesting fight on this card. The jr middle tripleheader could be great.

I'll be honest I don't think that stoppage was that bad, I was surprised when the ref stepped in and it was a bit odd especially when you consider that 4th round when Avalos was getting pinballed, Spencer and Adam were saying the ref was looking closely but I thought he wasn't fussed and I sensed a bad KO, but when I think about all the clean shots Avalos was standing up to, I'm quite glad it was stopped there

Avalos was starting to handle the shots better and was closing the gap as far as competiveness was concerned but Santa Cruz always shoed the quality and even if Avalos was starting to land Leo always had the last word, pretty measured performance from Santa Cruz he picked his moments to turn up the heat

I hated this fight when it got made and it still is shocking matchmaking but Avalos's balls cant help but impress you, he probably should've been allowed to continue but he needed saved from himself, LSC isn't a big puncher but who needs another Gutknecht

After seeing the Demarco knockout ( thought
  • Dmarco
retired 2 years ago) I skipped the recording straight to the New York light middleweight card.

I absolutely hated Leo until the Mares fight, picking up belts against weak holders and an padding his record whilst getting top money from uncle al. Then he shown he can actually fight. I even liked him after he lost to Frampton.

He wanted a tune up fight before fighting a guy he has already beat ! Nearly his who's resume is tune up fights. This guy could have been in great fights and partly down the the joke that is PBC. Both fighters would have been paid very well last night and the attendance didn't look good at all.

I still think he should have been stripped of his belt because Mares was mandated and he refused to fight him. But the WBA would rather get their sanctioning fees from both fights.

In fairness I like Mares. A true fighter and he was prepared to fight Leo this weekend he fought Cuellar after 15 months out, he didn't need a tune up fight then.

That Demarco stoppage was awful. I went to bed after two rounds of this fight and got up early to watch the 154 fights.
