Yes that's right I think. And Benn wasn't too far wrong with his idea that SN saw this as an easy win for the G man ( as did everyone else )

Milwaukee Sentinel -

Andy Ayling, public relations spokesman for Sports Network in London, said McClellan was well received when he arrived in London last Thursday.

"The people here are really taking to him. They want to know if he is the man that possesses all of that great power," Ayling said in a telephone interview from London.

McClellan is training in a facility about five minutes from where Benn once lived, but the fans appear to be siding with McClellan.

Benn recently made his fans upset when he closed his camp and fired his manager, Ayling said.

"That sent up the white flag," he said.

The media in London is predicting that McClellan will knock Benn out.

"Nigel has strong, raw power and puts you in the mind of Mike Tyson, but we feel if it comes down to a slugfest, McClellan will knock him out before the fifth round," Ayling said.

Ah the wonders of the internet..whatever happened to that Ayling bloke? :D
Benn was crucified for getting shot of Tibbs and I felt at the time that it was a ploy between Warren and King to knock-off Benn and get McClellan the belt then line up Bruno as a punch bag for Tyson. When Benn won big ones in the past he'd be "up" but after this one he looked like he wanted to batter Warren and ITV into submission as well. I bet Frank had to spend a few months cooling him down: "Don't worry Nigel I won't rest on my laurels now you've had this mega-fight, I've got Nardiello and Perez lined up then a high risk 0 reward return with Malinga." All the tlak was about Gerald before this one, I remeber the BN prediction covering ever base aside from a points win for either man and the prediction went: "McClellan in 3 (but I think Nigel could win in 1) or 4 (then again if Nige gets him past 4 it could be Benn in anything from 5,6,7,8,9,10,11 or 12)." I was a budding pragmatist and went for McClellan in 2 as I wanted to see him versus Jones, I wasn't as bad as Barry "I've taken this fight apart and see no winner other than McClellan" McGuigan or that burk from the Guardian who went for GM in 1!

Then it was all revised and everyone in the UK picked Benn with confidence, including SN. Classic.
Well Terrence, to be honest, McClellan KO1 is probably what the result should have been, that referee was shocking, he continually broke the fighters up when McClellan came in for the kill. But for that, no way Nige, much as I loved him as a fighter, would have made it beyond the 1st round.

apparently it doesn't count if you "do it in Germany", that's the impression I get from reading Farhood in BM and that Rodriguez guy on maxboxing
Yes, after all there has never been any odd decisions anywhere else in the world. Ah, all those classic German robberies and inept refereeing bouts such as Mike Tyson and Eddie Cotton versus Lennox Lewis, Achtung Cesar Chavez versus Durch technique Pernell Whittaker, Holmes-Spinks and a myriad of dodgy looking decisions that have taken place in the 4th Reich over there in the USA.
Cotton was disgraceful in Lewis-Tyson. Lewis should have hit Cotton, he gave more resistance than Tyson. also, in many states who don't regularly stage fights, when they finally get a biggie , like Lacy-Reid and Tyson-Williams, they are just so blatantly full of cack in their officiating.

in Boxing Monthly this month Farhood comes to the realization that "like it or not, boxing is now global"! a bit late, or what. i think Mulchahy of maxboxing is one of the best to read on the subject of euro boxing, at least he acknowledges tha the s/m division has been in the grip of europe for a good ten years

Yes, he knows his onions, but I think he has a bit of a dewy-eyed idea of England being some sort of hotbed of boxing where everyone is down the pub ranting and raving about the sport. Just shows, the grass is always greener, as over here we tend to think about boxing being 'big-time' in the states, when in fact, few people give a shit about it over there.

What Marty doesn't realise is that football is so dominant in terms of TV schedules over here, to the detriment of almost everything else.

This is the truth. Ottke, for all his faults and shady decision jobs, did beat Mitchell legitimately, and should have been crowned Ring champ at the time. Not that Im sad for him, he gets too much praise as it is, but its just another example of the Ring's inconsistencies.

Not at all - I am just not prepared to let Calzaghe get away with a well-calculated and reatively easy win over Lacy and claim championship status, while still having avoided the real chaellenges.
And yet you'd let Kessler fight Lucas and possibly Joppy!

James, I didn't see much wrong with the ref in the Benn and G-man fight. Do most think the knockdown when he was blown out of the ring was why you thought it should of been a 1st round stoppage?

Benn looked absolutely F'd and I thought had too much assistance getting back on his feet.

Have to disagree, Benn deserved that win thoroughly. His response to being battered in the first was temendous. He was not out cold in the first and proved just how much fight he had left in him with his performance thoughout the match. Ultimately, he was more devastating and ferocious than GM.

I think that's the problem.

Good as Kessler is, he isn't well enough known.
Which makes it a fight where Joe has everything to lose, and little to gain; at least publicly.

Calzaghe has fantastic ability, but lacking the inner strength to fight guys for personal fulfillment, keeps him from winning our absolute praise and respect.
