Mike Tyson vs 2000+ HW

Post by SAPFO »

Couple of young lads in their 20s I know think Mike Tyson would beat any, heavy in any era. They didn’t like it when I suggested he’d struggle with the size of modern HWs, and even Fury’s mobility would cause him problems.

So what do you think?

The 86-88 version of Tyson is a seriously hard night for any heavyweight on their best ever day.

I'd take that instalment of Mike to light the current bunch up like Christmas trees.

ppl will call me a dumb casual but aj wouldve been highly competetive with a good chance of beaten him. and ajs only a 4 year pro with 19 fights and not boxing long compared to most pros. scary to think of how good hell become.size, power, speed, combos, reflexes, grit.

prime tyson destroys pretty much all since 2000 and on though. but actually holy and lewis were still good in 2000 so maybe even those versions would still make prime mike their bitch.

but no doubt he takes out trash like peter, lyakhovich, ruiz, etc. do nasty things to guys like parker. would bust up the klits too. tyson is enough better to overcome the size against them.

I honestly don’t see it at all , I think an 1980s Tyson would KO AJ within 4 rounds .

AJ doesn’t have the skills to keep him off , he’s bang up right , he doesn’t have a great jab , he exits in straight lines . Tyson had better head movement, hand speed and power .

He would be way to much for the humble one

Size counts for a lot, it does not count for everything. AJ is a big strong lad with a powerful punch and lots of physical strength, he has also shown he can come back from the brink and depths of trouble (I used to be throwing stones at the hype train windows, am now sitting in first class, drinking a cup of tea, looking out the windows at the miserable bustards outside).

However, I think that although Tyson can be overestimated by some and his own frailties ignored (desire, inability to fight himself out of a hole, and battle through adversity, lack of being able to adapt mid fight), part of his frailties are actually what makes him so dangerous eg the inability to adapt tactics is because he is just so damn effective and genetically built to fight one way - fast, moving, aggressive, forward motion, combination punching with incredible speed and impact. It comes a cropper sometimes though but more through lack of giving a shite deep down as he is such a complex troubled guy who gave up training and putting the effort in.

Size was not an issue for me, at his best he had movement which made it an advantage for him rather than the other guy and his physical strength, power and impact of shots was as good as, in fact better than modern monsters. AJ may be stopping guys but Tyson was bouncing them off the ropes, playing basketball with them as they hit the deck and flopped around. His timing and the impact force was incredible.

The likes of AJ has never come across the likes of a PEAK Tyson who would slip their jab, move inside and explode a shot that he and they would not see coming, and once inside land a combination to the body and head. Don't forget, Tyson could take an incredible shot. He got stopped, but you had to batter the living fck out of him first.

I dont think there is one heavyweight currently that could beat 1986 Tyson. While AJ is the best out there Tyson would take too long dispatching him. I think the fight would be very much similar to the Bruno fight. I'm trying ot put a case together for Anthony Joshua but I just can't. Tyson in 2 or 3 rounds for my.

As good as he was, I don't think Tyson would stand much chance against two thousand or more other heavyweights.

Also, are we talking consecutively or concurrently? If it's the former, you'd need a fecking big ring...

Tyson's biggest problem would be his lack of an inside game. That being said, he'd ice most. The timmmmmbeerrrrr that would happen against Tyson Fury would be hilarious.

Hulking Joshua can't match Tyson's frenzied workrate (compare Tyson vs Tucker or Green vs Joshua's prolonged gassing vs 41 yr Klit), he can't match natural talent and he certainly can't take Tyson's power, which came from every angle at frightening speed. Also, an attack which fails to result in a KO seems to drain AJ's weighty muscles for several rounds, and what sporadic AJ attack is going to work on an opponent who was 1) extremeley hard to hit clean, and 2) has an A+++ chin?

Joshua being the enormous target he is, without great movement or jawbone would do very well to see round 2.

Considering there was no internet at the time, the hype and histeria involving Tyson was phenomenal: he must have been the most famous man on the planet— his name as well known as Hitlers. Anyway I loved Tyson at the time but think I got sucked into the hype a bit as well with him meant to be some unbeatable monster— as for today’s crop- peak Tyson beats most of them but as we know, if things were not going his way; he could crumble or lose interest— let’s not forget the bonecrusher and Tucker fights that came before Douglas

It'd take the best of the best to trouble him.

Lennox Lewis circa 2000 would still be a handful for him at any time. Wlad with the more cautious approach would trouble Tyson for a while, but I doubt he'd be able to avoid the KO shot all night.

Tyson Fury would get smoked.

Lack of inside game? He was 5 foot 11 he lived on the inside to get to these 6 foot plus guys he had to use head movement to get inside then when he was inside he went to work. I dont agree with you on the lack of inside game buddy

imo a lot of time mid-range gets confused for inside. he liked to explode with shots from mid range imo. he did have some good work inside but didnt consistently put together shots there.

He was a mid-range fighter. Mike had a couple of programmed combos coming in that we're effective but once a guy grabbed him he was clueless. If he was more than mediocre inside he would have been a real beast.

Tyson was absolutely massive. If he were in his prime today he’d be earning £100m+ for routine defences with Mayweather and McGregor begging him to allow them on to his undercard. Zero gimmicks with him too, that’s what made him so popular and intriguing I guess.

I think he’d have too much for Joshua although AJ isn’t as bad as some are making out here. One punch power, he might even hit harder than Tyson did.

Tyson was a far better finisher though in his prime. If hes hurt wlad like that he'd never have made it out of the round. Tyson was also very hard to hit and had a way better chin. Even past it he took an absolute hammering from Lewis before he was stopped.

Peak Tyson only had problems with guys who were brave enough to remain composed, had Oak Furniture Land chins, and could match his workrate if not skills. He wasn't especially effective at opening up that sort of customer. Holyfield was surely scared going in, but with his excellent chin and great skills, his strength of character saw him through.

Douglas' fears were largely removed by the recent death of his mother, else I'm sure he'd have been another victim of Tyson's intimidation. But with that nothing-really-matters mindset he was able to box to the very best of his ability, and was courageous in getting back up to finish the job.

Lewis was jumpy for their first few minutes, instinctively relying on grabbing and other defensive measures in reaction to Tyson's apparent threat, but those traces of panic vanished once he realised that Tyson was coming off worse physically, and he boxed to another of his smooth destructions. Had he not been clocked in the first two, I think Lewis would've always been a tough fight for Tyson.

But I can't see any of today's heavies having the composure to show up his inefficiencies on the inside, so I think he'd have walked through the lot. Since Ibeabuchi finished in '99, I can only think of Lewis, McCall, Holyfield and Tua as guys who would've stood up to him. But then those are his contemporaries (plus Bowe; Tua less so), so even though they were all cracking on past 2000, I wouldn't count them. I'd have given Vitali a bit of a chance had he been much faster.

Even Tyson himself very much doubt if he could beat Klitschko in his prime, 5 inches difference is a lot.

I dont think AJ or Tyson have/had one punch power, wilder has one punch power but AJ and Tyson are/were combination punchers that will string 3 4 5 shots together to get the opponent out of there also fear won and will win fights for AJ
