Plyometrics produce real explosive power, far more than squatting weights. It's about being able to produce power in the shortest period of time. Jumping jacks and burpees are back in vogue.Kalan wrote:Most all top heavyweights and actually most top boxers have strength trainers and work legs hard. Jumps, weights, plyometrics, anything they can to get stronger and faster. They didn't always. It used to be no weights or strength training at all, just the rope, shadow boxing, the bags, the mitts, sparring, and done. Maybe calisthenics, push-ups and sit-ups. Nothing like today.KiwiRider wrote:I always wondered why some true HW's don't work on their legs. Sure they run etc, but building up some thighs like Jarell Millar's can't hurt can it? did rahman have an atg chin considering he managed to stand upjamesmcdonnell wrote:Without the weights joshua would still be 230. He's legit. I'd say bowe and Lewis were naturally bigger men, frame wise, but hes a proper big man.
Lewis is the best really big man I've seen fight. He wasn't packing on weight, had good stamina, and huge power. I dont think there's been a bigger puncher with proper balance. The shot he hit rahman with is the biggest punch I've ever seen, up there with marciano and Walcott. For his size marciano must have been the best heavyweight puncher there was.

The wood chop is also used today, though with cable weights rather than an axe. I'd say modern heavyweights lack punch technique in general. Tyson generated far more explosive power than any heavyweight I can think of today.

Either way, one punch ended it.
Re: Is Anthony Joshua a Legit Heavyweight
ya, but is that really the hardest punch in boxing history when the guy stumbled up right after. i guess maybe rahman had a very good chin.

Of course he is. He's a little over-muscled in the upper body which is no doubt reducing his stamina - I think 235-240 would be his best fighting weight. He couldn't make cruiser losing a lot of muscle and then dehydrating himself to the point of barely being able to walk, let alone fight. As others have said, his legs only look underdeveloped in comparison to his overdeveloped upper body. Having bigger legs would make him slower and have worse stamina.

Lewis maybe - he looked fit and not over-muscled up to 250lb, though he was an inch shorter than Joshua.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Without the weights joshua would still be 230. He's legit. I'd say bowe and Lewis were naturally bigger men, frame wise, but hes a proper big man.

Bowe no - he was at his best at 235lb and looked soft when he weighed in the 240s, though he was never as muscle-bound as Joshua so it's hard to say.

Yes but bowe in his brief prime could fight at a serious lick. His two first fights with holy were real doozies. He was no body beautiful but bowe had a very big frame and natural power.jezzamundo wrote:Lewis maybe - he looked fit and not over-muscled up to 250lb, though he was an inch shorter than Joshua.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Without the weights joshua would still be 230. No question - a big heavyweight with good stamina and great offensive skills. Defensively, not so much.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yes but bowe in his brief prime could fight at a serious lick. Yes. Proved his undoing, along with his obsession with the fridge. I'm 6' and 190 and I looked like an umpalumpa stood next to him, I'd say he's a gunuine HW, only thing small about him was his waist, upper body and legs are huge

Is Anthony Joshua a Legit Heavyweight
No not really because all he would need to do would be to trim down less than 135 pounds and he could compete at bantamweight.

Anthony Joshua is so far beyond being a legit heavyweight in every sense of the word that it is beyond unfathomable why this is a question.
Coincidentally my chest measurement is exactly the same as Joshua's ... thigh

Re: Is Anthony Joshua a Legit Heavyweight
Hmmm... I wonder how it would go if a Heavyweight Champion of Joshua's size and skills fought 2 Featherweights the ability of Santa Cruz at the same time... I suppose he could ignore the punches and flurries of 1 of the Featherweights while he punched out the other... Then as he turned his attention to the Featherweight who remained standing, it wouldn't be pretty.. There would be Hell to pay.
There used to be "battle royals" back in the early 20th Century where they put 5 fighters in the ring for a free-for-all... 2 weaker competitors would often gang up on a stronger fighter and try to punch him TFO... But if the better fighter was able to punch 1 of his weaker attackers out, he would immediately turn his attention to the guy who was getting free shots at him and go after him with a brutal vengeance..
Battle Royals made for some spectacular action filled slug-fests that brought the house down -- because it was best to get rid of your opponents as fast as possible -- so others wouldn't attack you as soon as they knocked out their opponent.. I wonder if there's any existing footage of Battle Royals..

Or just one featherweight. The little guy could spend the whole fight running away, exactly like Haye did when he "fought" Valuev...and then corrupt judges could award the fight to the little guy because he got one single punch in.
Re: Is Anthony Joshua a Legit Heavyweight
I think it's like that on here some times, usually asdfjkl trying to fend off half a dozen assailants at once. It's bullying really but he doesn't seem fazed. Not enough to stop winding them up anywayKalan wrote:Hmmm... Your scenario made me think of the 1939 Battle of the river Plate, only that was a heavyweight against three cruisers
I don't imagine two feathers standing a ghost of chance against a Joshua. They couldn't hurt him or take his shots, it would be a massacre. I think you could add at least a couple more without affecting the outcome. It would make an interesting experiment but it would surely be deemed too dangerous.
