No Optional Title Defense For Woods
No Optional Title Defense For Woods
Warriors Boxing are objecting to Woods' optional IBF title defense against Jason DeLisle, on the grounds that top contender Glen Johnson should get first shot. Personally, I wonder why Warriors took all this time to object, although it would seem a bit odd for Woods to fight a guy a) he's already beaten, but b) whom Julio Gonzalez beat - when Johnson is coming off two impressiv wins.
But hey it's a meaningful fight. I fancy Woods this time.
This can have some interesting repercussions. I'm sure this will keep Calzaghe at super middleweight, hopefully to a unification. Also, the winner of Woods-Johnson could settle whom Calzaghe faces next year. Would definitely raise either Woods' or Johnson's profile and maybe point toward a natural matchup.

As long as Woods just gets fighting. I hate it for him to become a champion (however papery some think this to be) and turn over a new leaf fight-wise, but then have only one defence in god knows how long.
Obviously the Johnson fight would be fantastic for Woods. Tough, but winnable.
As you say though vivious, why Glen's people have to go and start kicking up a fuss now when Johnson's already been pissing about with Richard Hall fights and the like (fair enough, but I would think that should allow Woods a voluntary.)
Anyway, just get it on I say. Where's the news from? I take it there's no hope of Johnson just taking up the May date the Woods-De Lisle fight was/is set for?

seems like team Woods is protesting, but is it worth all the fuss over Jason DeLisle?

Ta.
Well if Johnson is going to be ready by May 13th, then fair enough, make the fight. But if he and his managers are going to keep poking about, get Woods' voluntary cancelled, then say they won't be ready for Woods until, July say, then that's piss.
All parties (IBF included) should sound out the soonest possible date Johnson-Woods can be made, and if it turns out Woods would have time for a voluntary should he so wish it, then let him have it

when Tarver and Jones wouldn't fight him again he settled on Woods' IBF belt, said he then wanted to unify then maybe go up to cruiser and then fight for a heavyweight title - i'm not joking! but also he hinted that calzaghe needed to fight him as wellMax Molyneux wrote:Johnson gave it up to fight Tarver so screw him.
He hasn't made noise about wanting it back either.

Woods' people moved his voluntary from 'some time in March' to May, and Johnson's tune-up against coming-out-of-retirement-for-one-last-payday Hall was in February. That means no Woods-Johnson till what...August? Glen's peaople know his clock is ticking, so theres no way theyd settle for that.
The good news is, the Woods-Delisle fight, which was going to be pointless anyway, is going to be cancelled in favour of Woods-Johnson happening immediately (if Team Johnson get their way).
That way, 175 will take a big step to getting cleared up again. I too am thinking Clinton can take this fight now that his metabolism is right. But if Glen were to win, he said he wants to unify 175, so we'd FINALLY see some meaningful unifications happening (Tiozzo-Erdei aside) hopefully involving the likes of Adamek.
Of course, we all know that JC twice turned down Johnson two years ago, back-to-back, so that grudge match could be finally taken care of as well....or better yet we might see Calzaghe-Woods.
All fights I want to see.

Re: No Optional Title Defense For Woods
i don't know. it's certainly looks in a bit of jeopardy, though Wankers' should have made their intentions clearer instead of waiting to see 'Woods-DeLisle signed' on fightnews! a lot of this happening, Hatton-Collazo, Karmazin-Santos (still?)pepsi wrote:Wrong!!!Axe wrote: The good news is, the Woods-Delisle fight, which was going to be pointless anyway, is going to be cancelled in favour of Woods-Johnson happening immediately (if Team Johnson get their way).
