Within reason. Not crossing-himself Bruno scared, obviously, but I can only imagine a tiny handful of fighters not feeling trepidation at that point in Tyson's career. Holyfield's among the bravest and didn't let those worries dictate, but that doesn't mean that Tyson didn't bother him mentally somewhat.

Maybe scared's too strong a word because of its implication. Probably should've written anxious. Point is, Holyfield wasn't beaten before he entered the ring.

I think you get Holyfields mentality all wrong.

I'm not a fanboy of his like saad is, lol, but what strikes me about Vanders mentality from what I have seen, it's
bulletproof. It's bulletproof even when he's in the wrong, lol, but I have no doubt he believed completely he was going to beat Tyson. He probably told himself it was because he was the righteous man and Tyson the sinner so God would empower his victory, amongst possibly many other reasons he was going to beat Tyson, mental, physical, and technical.

Anyway I loved Tyson at the time but think I got sucked into the hype a bit as well with him meant to be some unbeatable monster— as for today’s crop- peak Tyson beats most of them but as we know, if things were not going his way; he could crumble or lose interest— let’s not forget the bonecrusher and Tucker fights that came before Douglas
Tyson was absolutely massive. If he were in his prime today he’d be earning £100m+ for routine defences with Mayweather and McGregor begging him to allow them on to his undercard. Zero gimmicks with him too, that’s what made him so popular and intriguing I guess.

I think he’d have too much for Joshua although AJ isn’t as bad as some are making out here. One punch power, he might even hit harder than Tyson did.
I dont think AJ or Tyson have/had one punch power, wilder has one punch power but AJ and Tyson are/were combination punchers that will string 3 4 5 shots together to get the opponent out of there also fear won and will win fights for AJ
Ladies and gentleman: a poster who rates Deontay Wilder's power over Mike Tyson's.

I'm not even sure Holyfield was anxious going in against Tyson.

Holyfield went up to HW specifically to go after Tyson & had been angling for a Tyson fight since 1989.

By the time they did actually fight, he certainly didn't look anxious or scared, in fact, it was Tyson who looked petrified going in the 2nd time around.

The proof is in the record fool so dont try and make me out to be clueless,i was watching mike tyson through the 80' 90's and 2000's and ill stick by mike tyson hardly ever knocked people anyone with one shot he was a combination knockout artist not a single punch knockout artist. Im nit saying wilder is a better boxer than mike tyson im just talking about knockout power with one shot

You understand the characteristics of a man who likes to come across as humble right? Tyson loves to say that shit and be Mr Respectful, goes back decades like when he calls Larry - Mr Holmes and stuff like that. Understand the man to then understand his meaning and reasoning for saying something.

Go back 20 odd years then ask him the same question when he isnt an old man and he is in his prime and full of testosterone you will get a different answer.

Depends what day you caught him on or which year - pre 1991 he was still playing the subservient card, then for a dozen odd years he was the testosterone fuelled macho man who gave all those cracking interviews which can now be found as a collection on youtube, and now back to the respectful boxing fan and historian who is humble again.

I understand that no matter who you fight it is damn hard to knock all but of 38 opponents out, tell me, god of boxing,do you think wilder would of knocked out mitch green? Or james quick tillis? Or ribalta? I think he would of took quicker to knock tyrell biggs out aswell. Tyson was awsome dont get me wrong but kets not make out that he was in this golden age of heavyweight boxing, there was no one out there, they had to bring holmes out of retirement cause there was no decent heavyeights out there. Tubbs bruno williams and douglas are all great fighters arnt they pffft

I've never seen a fighter more relaxed during their ring walk. If anyone was scared it was Mike. Tyson was definitely scared for the rematch. Look up the psalm from his trunks in fight one. Lol, holyfield, scared.

Holyfield couldn't wait to get his hands on Tyson, he'd known them since they were amateurs and always believed he had the beating of him, physically and mentally. When everyone saw the intimidating monster that was 'Tyson' to Holyfield he was just Mike. Watch the end of the first round of fight 1 when Tyson hits him after the bell, Holyfield looks him right in the eye and belts him back. And during the instructions for fight 2 Tyson looked very intimidated. Tyson was always a fast starter but he was very reticent in the first couple of rounds of the rematch until he lost it when he realised he was in for another beating.

:TU: the documentary 'chasing tyson' that ESPN did a couple years back was great. Evander was simply the greater fighter and tougher man. Mike knows that. No shame either.

Tyson would beat any fighter in history, he’d just have to land the right hook to the body and right uppercut to the head to close the show. The only reason he went the distance with Tucker was due to the fact that he was mesmerised by Tucker’s Jheri curl and wanted to see if it could last the full 12.

Ha! You could well be right. I suppose I am overlooking the timeframe, insofar as Tyson had lost form by '96, whereas Holyfield was still close to his prime. I just find it hard to imagine him not having any quiet jitters before it was underway. Tyson did, absolutely.

Pre-prison, Holmes, Foreman and McCall are the three who struck me as totally unafraid of Tyson (fantastic chins, all). It's a real shame that Tyson-Holyfield never happened in '91, 'cause we'll never know what would've happened. I'd have favoured Tyson on paper, but it's possible that he was always bothered by Holyfield. And Holyfield was willing to fight, there's no doubt of that.

Bowe was '93, so he wasn't that far out. Yeah, people feared for him, but they didn't have the benefit of hindsight in knowing that he'd go on for years at the highest level.

My boy! I agree that Tyson's widely overrated in the AtG stakes, but we've drifted from the topic, and I think he'd bulldoze most of the current crop. Same goes for Holyfield, of course.

Tyson was widely considered to be back to his best in 96. See any contemporaneous media. Holyfield was expected by many to be defeated and literally dead by the end of the night.
