Does Floyd Patterson still hold record for knockdowns?

Post by joe kurtz »

I know that he held it for visits to the canvas by any heavyweight champion in their career with, I believe, 19 knockdowns suffered. But, does he still hold that distinction?
Without taking all the various "alphabet soup" belt holders over the past couple of decades into consideration, I'm thinking that maybe poor Leon Spinks passed Floyd on the way down ( pun definitely intended BTW ) at some point late in his career? I mean, he lost a LOT of fights toward the end there. Quite a few inside the distance.
I know Leon's record as listed here doesn't account for all of his many spills, but does anyone out there have an accurate "unofficial" tally?
19 is a lot of times to be dropped so perhaps Floyd still holds the record, but if I had to wager, I'd be of the notion to say that Leon did him one or two better...

Opinions? Guesses?

I think he holds the distinction of being knocked down more times in title fights (17) still.

I think the record is held by Ezzard Charles actually, if you count all the knockdowns.
