Re: Main Events petitions WBO to make Kovalev-Shabranskyy a vacant title fight
According to World Boxing Organization President Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, his organization will make a ruling this week on whether or not to sanction Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs) vs. Vyacheslav "Lion-Heart Chingonskyy" Shabranskyy (19-1, 16 KOs) for the vacant WBO light heavyweight world title.
"The promoter for Kovalev has requested permission to have us sanction the Kovalev-Shabranskyy fight for the vacant WBO title, and the relevant committee of the organization will make a decision this week," Valcarcel said to Vasily Konov.

Naive much? Since when do title fights go to the well deserved or worthy? THIS IDEA is the one that put you over the edge to start squawking? It's all about which boxers are going to put the fanny's in the seats and can bring in the highest sanctioning fees. Kovalev is clearly one of the top LH's in earnings, tickets sold and star value. Being WORTHY of a title shot has never been a top bargaining chip in boxing...you should pay better attention.Enlightened-One wrote:So Kathy Duva has filed a petition to the WBO to sanction a bout between her man, Sergey Kovalev (who has an exclusive contract with HBO) to another HBO-affiliated boxer, Vyacheslav Shabranskyy, that isn’t actually ranked in the WBO’s top-15 fighters?ValMar wrote:Why not ?
Where’s the f’ckíng sense in that?![]()
Why can’t Sergey Kovalev be forced to face a top-five WBO ranked opponent for the vacant title instead, such as the ilk of a: Olexander Gvozdyk, Sullivan Barrera, Marcus Browne, Artur Beterbiev etc.?
Vyacheslav Shabranskyy has never beaten a world-rated opponent, was decked three times and then stopped by Sullivan Barrera only nine months ago... and has only managed to scored two victories over relative journeymen since.
I’m not ranked in the WBO’s top-15 and I have never defeated a world-ranked opponent… so why shouldn’t I be deemed as an equally qualified world title challenger as Vyacheslav Shabranskyy?
Perhaps Kathy Duva can call an Uber cab driver to step into the ring to face Kovalev for the vacant title instead?
To those that are either asking “why not?” or “I'm not against it”… please think about what you’re really proposing?

My complaint has absolutely nothing to do with Sergey Kovalev.caldo2025 wrote:Naive much? Since when do title fights go to the well deserved or worthy? The issue I have is the idea of Kathy Duva asking the WBO to sanction his bout against the anonymous and unheralded Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (an unranked and undeserving fighter) as a world title fight.
I feel that Sergey should not be "gifted" a world title belt with such ease.
Simply put: Krusher deserves an opportunity to compete for one of the recently vacated belts, Shabranskyy does not. In fact, Vyacheslav is actually an unranked fighter.
If any other boxer that you detested was given such an easy route to capturing a world title, you'd probably be outraged.
Re: Main Events petitions WBO to make Kovalev-Shabranskyy a vacant title fight
I've been very vocal about how disrespectful it was to award Lonachenko all of those title bouts without earning them so I know where you're coming from. My point is that we've seen so much worse undeserving challengers gifted title shots than a boxer like Kovalev that just had a fantastic reign as champion who not only took tough defenses multiple times a year but he was the biggest reason why we've spent the last few years with great interest within a division that historically does very little entertaining of the masses. Plus many feel he was robbed of the title in the first Ward fight so if anyone deserves "one of these", he does over anyone else at the weight.Enlightened-One wrote:My complaint has absolutely nothing to do with Sergey Kovalev.caldo2025 wrote:Naive much? Re: Main Events petitions WBO to make Kovalev-Shabranskyy a vacant title fight
So funny to read all these comments against how this fight shouldn’t be sanctioned for world title !!! Why not !??
Cause Shab is not rated in wbo??
When is everybody gonna realize that those rankings are absolutely worthless ...
He was nowhere to be found in wbc and he is #10 now
Bivol was ranked in wbo.. but he gave up the spot for wba
Now the spot is vacant lol
So maybe wbo will recognize Shabranskyy as a worthy opponent ..
Besides Barrera fight wasn’t even right !
The man was sick as a dog
His team is finally releasing statements about that
And if he was able to drop Barrera while sick
I can’t wait for Kovalev !!!

Re: Main Events petitions WBO to make Kovalev-Shabranskyy a vacant title fight
Vyacheslav Shabranskyy was not ranked by the WBO when Main Events announced that he’d be facing Sergey Kovalev.
Main Events then formally requested that the WBO promote Kovalev’s Nov. 25th bout with Vyacheslav Shabranskyy to a vacant world title fight.
Vyacheslav Shabranskyy has now been elevated to tenth place in the latest WBO rankings, despite not having competed since the previous ratings were published.
He’s jumped the queue, since there were fighters previously rated above him that are now ranked below him, without reason (since none of them have engaged in any contests during that timeframe).
Therefore, I fully expect the utterly rancid WBO to approve Main Events’ request and sanction Kovalev-Shabranskyy as a world title fight.

100% they will sanction this now.. It's not just the WBO that do this..Enlightened-One wrote:Vyacheslav Shabranskyy was not ranked by the WBO when Main Events announced that he’d be facing Sergey Kovalev.

The WBO do seem to make some strange decisions though, because Joe Smith Jr. was outclassed by Sullivan Barrera in his last outing in July.Ruthless-RKO wrote:100% they will sanction this now.. He wasn’t rated at all by the WBO in their previous rankings, but even though he’s not fought since then, he is now placed eleventh. So he’s jumped the queue also.
I guess if you’re a financially lucrative fighter, your position in the WBO’s rankings will continue to climb, even if you don’t engage in fights.
I can understand the reasons why the WBO ejected Artur Beterbiev, Erik Skoglund & Enrico Koelling from their rankings, but I don’t know why they change the sequence of the ratings for their inactive fighters.
Surely (assuming when no fights have occurred), the fighters take the appropriate steps forward in the queue when other boxers leave it?

What should have happened is, WBO should have said, If Kovalev wants the WBO title on the line, he must fight number 1 ranked Olexander Gvozdyk. If anything, Gvozdyk's next fight should be for the vacant title..Enlightened-One wrote:The WBO do seem to make some strange decisions though, because Joe Smith Jr. was outclassed by Sullivan Barrera in his last outing in July.Ruthless-RKO wrote:100% they will sanction this now.. Now that it's clear that WBO will saction Kov/Shabbs... I hope they mandate the winner to fight Gvozdyk next.

Re: Main Events petitions WBO to make Kovalev-Shabranskyy a vacant title fight
I don’t feel that Sergey Kovalev (or any fighter for that matter) should be able to dictate to one of the four main governing bodies that their next bout against an unranked opponent should automatically be deemed as a world title contest.Ruthless-RKO wrote:What should have happened is, WBO should have said, If Kovalev wants the WBO title on the line, he must fight number 1 ranked Olexander Gvozdyk. Instead, the WBO should order a bout between their two highest ranked fighters (Olexander Gvozdyk and Sergey Kovalev).
If one or both of those contestants are not available, then select the next highest ranked alternative(s), such as: Kovalev-Barrera, Kovalev-Browne, Kovalev-Yarde etc. Basically, go down the list until a suitable fight can be made.

When the thread was first started, he wasn't ranked. At the time, I checked the rankings displayed by both Fight-News and also the WBO website. I don't believe I was the only person to pickup this point either.greg wrote:Shabranskyy was ranked by WBO #11 in September and #10 in October..
