Braemer Vs Brant
Re: Braemer Vs Brant
Thought I would be able to watch this live on the ITV box office website.
So not seen it yet. Sounds like Braehmer turned back the clock a bit. Didn't have a clue what Brant was about. I as hoping the younger fighter would make a statement. A shame as in the videos before the fight he comes across as a really likeable guy.
As much as people can say Braehmer had a padded resume for me he has at worst been solid European level.
On the bigger picture he is now the last of a generation of German boxers. Strum is done, steiglitz will be soon, Abraham done, Huck near the end. Apart from Zeuege ( who I don't rate that highly) I don't think there is anyone of a decent level coming through over there

Steiglitz has retired I believe.Naandrew wrote:Thought I would be able to watch this live on the ITV box office website.

Re: Braemer Vs Brant
maybe, but as is the case with a few british fighters we've known (Hatton being the main example that comes to mind), his bodypunching seems to have dropped off dramatically as he's stepped up even a little bit in classOssyrules wrote:I called this one wrong, expected youth and energy to overcome an older guy whose at a lower weight than he’s been for some time. The script looked there, but you have to take your hat off to JB
I still think smith should be too much, but smith impressed me less and less these days. If JB has a strong south paw jab vs Smith it’ll be a real good base for him. How JB handles the left hooks to the body at 168 will be interesting
we all remember Hatton/ Smith muscling outmatched opponents (undersized by two weightclasses in Smith's case) against the ropes and letting their hands go to the body to great effect, when they were at WBU/sub-Euro level
with Hatton that kind of bodypunching pretty much stopped as soon as he got to world level (Castillo aside), and it seems the same to me with Smith, in terms of his 'step up' fights (lol) I can only really think of Rebrasse and uh Skoglund (?), with Skoglund Smith hardly got to his body all night, and I don't recall him blasting Rebrasse to the body consistently either (could be wrong, ages ago and the usual memory issues)
anyways I have said before all very well beating punchbags to the body, but i don't think Smith is going to have too many stationary targets from this point and I don't think we're going to see him landing effectively with anything like the same frequency, he's just up against people with much better footwork than the ones he used to tee off on, and his own feet aren't the best for cutting off the ring.

He has just found an article about it. I thought he was still European champ at light heavy.stujones wrote:Steiglitz has retired I believe.Naandrew wrote:Thought I would be able to watch this live on the ITV box office website.

Got to be concerns for boxing over in Germany though. If I'm not mistaken didn't they have a quiet period before he likes of Ottke
Re: Braemer Vs Brant
I’m on board with your general point, although not with the rebrasse example. My recollection was the left hook was on his body all night and wore rebrasse down over the fight, getting the knock down late, which I’m sure was from a left hook? I’d have the rewatch.Counter-puncher wrote:maybe, but as is the case with a few british fighters we've known (Hatton being the main example that comes to mind), his bodypunching seems to have dropped off dramatically as he's stepped up even a little bit in classOssyrules wrote:I called this one wrong, expected youth and energy to overcome an older guy whose at a lower weight than he’s been for some time. It’s more an age and weight cut think that I think JB may be hurting more off them shots also.
It’s no foregone though, JB better than anything smith has faced skill wise

if your recollection is even that clear its probably better than mineOssyrules wrote:I’m on board with your general point, although not with the rebrasse example. is there another longer fight he was involved in that i may be thinking about?
Skoglund's movement certainly meant he barely got a shot in to the body at all, anyway, and I'd expect the same against any decent ring technician who could move a little bit

Re: Braemer Vs Brant
for example if he fights Groves in the final, the way Groves will crouch a bit low and bend at the waist if he's under pressure from close range may largely offset Mundo's bodypunching IMO (also he needs to be wary of catching a big counter from GG to the head if he concentrates on the body)

Really strange that Braehmer is apparently effective at 168 yet never tried to get in on the possible fights with Abraham, Stieglitz, Sturm etc. Surely he'd have made more money there than up at 175?
Re: Braemer Vs Brant
Yeah I agree, I’m a big groves fan but for a while feared mundo was all wrong for him. Seeing him in his last few though I’m quite confident Groves can out class himCounter-puncher wrote:for example if he fights Groves in the final, the way Groves will crouch a bit low and bend at the waist if he's under pressure from close range may largely offset Mundo's bodypunching IMO (also he needs to be wary of catching a big counter from GG to the head if he concentrates on the body)
Re: Braemer Vs Brant
I didn't say they'd be the most exciting fights or anything, I'm just saying those guys are all still active more or less. Abraham and Stieglitz have fought this year, and Sturm fought last year and got a win.skanksta wrote:

They'd probably still draw crowds in Germany with those fights.

I'm not shooting the messenger !

Sturm is wanted by German authorities as part of an investigation into steroids, as a result he fled to Bosnia and lives there now.gilgamesh wrote:I didn't say they'd be the most exciting fights or anything, I'm just saying those guys are all still active more or less.
