Boxing never had a megastar in my eyes

Post by Jip »

Ali never liked to train and most parts of his career he was out of shape or just at 70 %. He is arguably one of the most overrated elite Athletes ever. People talk about him of the goat, not only of boxing but out of all sports, when athletes like jordan or messi were ALWAYS in shape and did much more spectacular stuff.

Prime tyson hit harder, was faster and more spectacular but his prime career was so short. The rest was being fat, in jail or just losing. He couldbe been the goat but isnt.

Floyd on the other hand was always in shape, but nobody can be the goat but be this boring, same goes for jones.

Closest was srr, but media was bad back than. Opponents were mostly bad. Srr today with good media, sponsors and opponents. This couldvs been IT. Robinson vs mayweather/pacquiao/crawford/ggg/canelo :brick:

But reality. We never had 1 elite boxer with a clean cut career. Tiger woods (except the end), jordan, messi, cr7, you get what i mean?

Our top stars. Either they dont want to train ali, tyson, or they are boring mayweather or lose tomany fights ones they face good opponents de la hoya.

Mike Tyson was the biggest mega star in boxing ever.

Tiger woods was the biggest mega star in golf ever

Eddie Edwards was the biggest mega star for ski jumping ever

Those are 3 facts.

Only an utter moron can question the legacy status of Muhammad Ali. His legend is so much more than any other sportsmen I know.

Mike Tyson was absolutely a mega star as well

I dont know how big Ali was in terms of fan status in his peak as he was just out of my time. Of course after retirement Ali was a big star. But was he a bigger star at his peak or after retirement?

For a time, Jack Dempsey was the most famous man on the planet. Is that not megastardom?

Ali was rarly in shape. Was in the second half of his career not very spectacular. Gift desc. againat norton or losses. Unserachiever. Compare this to messi who has been phenomenal and spectacular, always in tip topshape for over 10 years counting.

Tyson also a megastar, but what was tysons career? 6 years at the top, than a mix of being out of shape, jail and women, not comparable to a career like cr7 who never gets out of his prime, always in shape, always impressiv.

If being one of the most famous people in history doesn't make Ali a megastar in your eyes then you're not talking about megastardom.

Stardom and fame go hand in hand.

You are quite right that Ali took his foot off the gas in the 70s but his fame like that of Caesar, Alexander, Bonaparte, Hitler, and Kennedy is indelibly assured.

His career encompassed great success, bravery against impossible odds, colossal inspiration to millions and a tragic fall to match any Greek hero of antiquity.

He shook up the world

You dont understand what i mean so i will make myself clear.

If you want to compare the highest form of greatness than lets just take the greatest athlete of all.

Michael jordan. ~18 year career. 18 years of being in A+ shape, 18 years with the mindset of perfection, still to this considered the goat of basketball, most lists rank him goat of any sports.

So what did tyson and ali do?

Ali. ~8 years in shape, being the best p4p, winning against liston. The rest, ~12 years a mix of legal problems, boxing pause, the mindeset of not wanting to train hard, being out of shape, struggling against foremon, losing to frazier and getting gift descisions.

Tyson. ~9 years of perfection looking as impressiv as any athlete has ever looked. The rest, 11 years of jail, legal problems, the mindeset of eating ice cream & vagina and being a loser.

Now you tell me who had a more goat like career. Dempsey, ali amd tyson were all megastars, but compare their career with jordan or messi and it just isnt the same.

You guys are very contradicting yourself. You always say how important a long career, staying in shape is, but than forget that a lot of years of tysons and alis career were awful compared to other greats like federer, jordan, messi.

Not only was Muhammad Ali a megastar in boxing, but some would consider him the top megastar of all sports.

Just google top athletes of all time and see how many, if any lists exclude Ali within their top 10.

Boxing is different though. These guys aren't getting pounded in the skull every time they play their sport. And those sports are set up for those guys to face the best in their sport at least once a year. Comparing these sports to boxing is like apples and oranges. If you are looking for someone in a combat sport to match the criteria you put forth and set with basketball, tennis, and futball stars, you will never ever, not in a million years have a megastar is boxing.

There have definitely been megastars in Boxing. There were years when the Heavyweight Champion was the single most recognizable Athlete on the face of the Earth. You need 'em to be bigger than that?

The dictionary definition of the word "megastar" is:

A very famous person in the world of entertainment or sport.

Please create a different thread that realistically describes your actual sentiments.

Finaly a good reasonable answer.

You are right. Playing and getting punched in the head are 2 different things. But you have to aggree that staying in shape, having the mindset of perfection and traini g at the highest level any athlete can do boxer and non boxer right?

Look at pacquiao, always in shape trained like possessed, always the desire to win, always faced the best, climbed divisions like it was nothing. That is the closest career of a goat like career for a boxer. And had floyd been a Spectacular enyojing to watch boxer than floyd would ve been in the conversation. Cause in Terme of training atitude, longvidity and brilliance no one can deny he was superb.

Imagine somebody with the skills of prime jones and the training atitude of mayweather and marketebility of de la hoya. That would be a guy above jordan.

I dont know how big Ali was in terms of fan status in his peak as he was just out of my time. Of course after retirement Ali was a big star. But was he a bigger star at his peak or after retirement?
Early Cassius Clay divided opinion, but post Vietnam Ali was huge. Can you imagine someone galvanating the biggest attraction in Sport in zaire these days

Michael Jordan is big and has been marketed even bigger. There’s people with more bball knowledge than me here, but any conversation I have re basketball and Jordan never gets the goat nod

Messi is an unreal footballer. I’m huge football fan. Messis stardom will never come close to Ali though. Neither has maradona, CR7, R9, pele probably closest.
