What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
I can't help but think moving an 18st frame for 36 minutes (12 rounds) will be taxing on the body if AJ goes the distance, what was your assessment of the fight?

I didn't vote for any because i think all the weights are too heavy but i wouldn't be surprised if he is heavier again next time out.The trouble is nowadays there aren't enough decent heavies to test him to the limit,Wlad did to a certain degree but he eased off on his attacks under his brothers instructions and the rest is history.I think AJ would easily chase someone round for 12 rounds but under fire he will struggle.

Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
One glaring reality to emerge for me personally is how bad this division is, because Takam seemed very limited. And he's in the top 20.
AJ is starting to scare me. If Takam can have that success, can Joseph Parker? Will Wilder blow him away? I hope not. But it's a worry.
Just can't wait to see how he prepares for his next bout, and what weight he is.

Wilder can ko anyone he hits clean,Parker could stay in close and try to rough AJ up and he's tough too, would love to see AJ V Povetkin.

Joshua said he was going to show off some good body work.. Takam is the one who connected on the good body shots.. Possibly what may have slowed AJ down.

fair enough pal, just out of interest what lb in your opinion would be ideal for a heavyweight (say 6ft4-6ft7)bigjack wrote:I didn't vote for any because i think all the weights are too heavy but i wouldn't be surprised if he is heavier again next time out.The trouble is nowadays there aren't enough decent heavies to test him to the limit,Wlad did to a certain degree but he eased off on his attacks under his brothers instructions and the rest is history.I think AJ would easily chase someone round for 12 rounds but under fire he will struggle.

I'd say 238 max,should be less muscular,more lean.

Nothing we didn't already know. British referees will stop fights way sooner than they should.

Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
- Takam is a tough SOB
-Joshua throws beautiful combinations when he puts them together
- Aj takes too many right hands and Wilder is a serious threat to turn out his lights with one of them.
- That ref looked sketchy. It's only a good example of the same kind of stoppage. Anyone remember when Canelo was getting outboxed by Alfonso Gomez and Alvarez landed one flurry and the ref jumped in like....'whew, I didn't think I'd have a chance". It wasn't nearly that bad, but it reeked of saving the KO record more than protecting the fighter.
- His weight was fine. He's a huge guy who throws heavy shots and has some stamina issues. He fights through it like a champion. Not the first, nor the last to have that combo.

Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
Not so sure I didn’t think it was a terrible stoppage maybe a bit premature but Takam had two bad cuts and didn’t look all that enthusiastic when the doctor was checking him out. Call me brutal but I like to see a ko so for me if he’s still defending himself he should be left to continue but I can see why the red stepped in.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:- Takam is a tough SOB

I'm with you, he was having his best moments of the fight and catching Josh regularly. It just wasn't as bad as Canelo/Gomez.Finn wrote:Not so sure I didn’t think it was a terrible stoppage maybe a bit premature but Takam had two bad cuts and didn’t look all that enthusiastic when the doctor was checking him out. Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
Joshua needs to come in around the 17st mark.....no higher.
He was slower and musclebound to a degree against Klitschko and it was worse the other night.
That excess muscle mass is affecting his speed, fluidity, stamina, movement and I think even his power too. He lacked snap and explosiveness the other night and that's down to him being lumbering.
It is crystal clear he's carrying too much weight and its negatively affecting him.....and yet virtually nobody in the industry is actually spitting the truth out and saying it. They hint at it, but don't actually have the balls to just say it how it is. There are enough f*cking pundits on SKY....someone open their mouth and speak the truth.
If he comes in heavy again then his strength and conditioning team are not doing their job. And neither is Rob McCracken, because he absolutely knows that Joshua's too heavily muscled, and he's the boss of the camp so he needs to be having a serious word with those responsible for Joshua's S&C.
If its AJ himself whose the main problem (and I think that is the case) then somebody needs to grow some nuts and tell him straight even if it means losing a job. At the end of the day he's a boxer not a bodybuilder. Boxing is what has made him a multi millionaire and its boxing where his immediate future will be.

Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
Depends what you class as "success". Takam won one, maybe two rounds out of nine and was losing the 10th, he had both eyes split open, had been knocked down once and, for all the talk of Joshua gassing, never actually had him in any trouble.TheGingerBomber wrote:One glaring reality to emerge for me personally is how bad this division is, because Takam seemed very limited. He was incredibly brave, showed phenomenal durability and didn't get knocked out, but lets not pretend he didn't get beaten up.
Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
100% agree with this, I think AJ has the potential to be the unified champion but not if he is coming in so heavy it is negatively affecting his game.lurkyshaka wrote:Joshua needs to come in around the 17st mark.....no higher.

The stoppage was badly timed, the last three punches AJ threw were slipped by Takam, so he clearly wasn't defenceless. He looked in worse states earlier in the fight and didn't get stopped.
Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
That AJ came in too heavy yet again, the stoppage was terrible, Takam came to win it, and if Josh was in a remotely dangerous HW div he wouldlnt have a single belt to his name
Think Povetkin would over come early troubles & beat him

I learned that Takam has maybe the best head movement in the heavyweight division (not that that is saying too much), I was very impressed with how slippery he was

How can a boxer, who trains for endurance, keep adding lean muscle to an already jacked physique?

It is actually impossible without drugs. I know that sounds a bit harsh but it is true. Natural bodybuilders can’t get the gains he does and that’s all they train for. I think it’s why his reflexes are shite and he’s very stiff at the shoulders. Roid pump.

Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
Indeed, thats been my assumption since his post-Olympic gains
Re: What did we learn from yesterdays fight?
Joshua was gifted the title so quickly, before he was ready and he didn't really get enough learning fights.
Saturday's fight was a great learning fight and AJ will be a better fighter for it.
