Lewis insulted?
I was watching the stream version of the PBF fight and at one point Lewis is commentating about how he needed the bad fights to built himself up to a good preformance sometimes and one of the other guys (merchant?) says "Great fighters do it virtually every fight", was this a snide comment, a dig? It seemed a bit out of order.

i was watching the stream to and there was something Lampley said to lewis aswell which seemed a bit out of order right at the beginning of the show. He said something like '' you know all about losing the title'' to lewis.
i thought lewis commentating was really good, although during the undercard fights lampley talked about mayweather-judah and other topics unrelated to the fight happening infront of them and a couple of times merchant was actually trying to get his attention back on the fight in the ring!

the yanks are still sore over lewis being the premier heavy over the last 10 years and kicking alot of US butt in the process. just like they will be sore about Calzaghe for years. expect alot of flack to land on ricky hatton when he busts a few more of 'em up.
they are the pre-eminent bad losers in this world.

Lampley slipped in a few jibes, I remember one nasty one regarding Lewis' genes/Jamaica and England. Maybe not so much nasty as uncouth, but it still kinda left you wanting Lampley to simply STFU. Larry Merchant dissenting with Lennox during one of the undercard fights also was a bit hard to take. These clowns are paid to describe the fight journalese style, let's not try and give insight into the fight when you can only talk out your arse. Merchant's shilling of Floyd, solely because of his pre-fight prediction, was also disgraceful. Was calling the fight a 'massacre' and all sorts, just because he said it'd be pre-fight. Sooner he f'ucks off the better.

I think Merchant is class personally.
i think trinidad stopped mayorga in the 9th the week after roy got stopped by johnson in the ninth and when roy was on hbo the next week merchant was like,
Merchant- "Well in the past 2 weeks we've had two ninth round knockouts"
Roy -"Watch it larry".
Merchant comes out with some good stuff though. After johnson got beaten by vitali,
"folks, this whale just got harpooned!!!" lol
and when they were building wlad up he was like,
"I've heard that a lot of female fans tune in every time wladimir klitschko fights, and judging by his looks, I can see why".

The last quote is a bit eww, is this Merchant gay? Halirva33 wrote:I think Merchant is class personally.

These are laughable comments.
Lewis' arrogance often causes commentators to make remarks at him... I did not see the broadcast, so I am not defending anything that anyone said...
But to say that it's because he's British and not "American" is a joke and a half.
The US Media is not like that to Hatton, who doesn't make a fornicating fool of himself with arrogance the way Lewis did/does.
Furthermore... Lampley and Merchant constantly make remarks(About getting knocked out) to Roy Jones when Roy's ego takes over... Saying how he could still be the champ if he "wanted" to... The same way Lennox does.

Losers!!
No, you "Lollies" are just upset that two of our Americans KO'ed your dreadlock champion, each time with just one punch.harrygreb wrote:the yanks are still sore over lewis being the premier heavy over the last 10 years and kicking alot of US butt in the process. just like they will be sore about Calzaghe for years. expect alot of flack to land on ricky hatton when he busts a few more of 'em up.

Ker-Pow!!!
Not to mention they shellacking Mercer gave him, who actually beat Lewis also.
er, Lewis beat Mercer by at least a couple of points. and he handled that guy that ppl like to pretend is the best heavyweight of his generation, Holyfield a couple of times. and he tore that guy's face apart who was supposed to be the heir apparent of the heavyweight division - despite being in some of the worst shape of his career

In fairness, the holyfield that bowe beat would have beaten lewis.viciousmaussa wrote:er, Lewis beat Mercer by at least a couple of points. and he handled that guy that ppl like to pretend is the best heavyweight of his generation, Holyfield a couple of times. and he tore that guy's face apart who was supposed to be the heir apparent of the heavyweight division - despite being in some of the worst shape of his career
The second holyfield fight was hard. Holyfield was already deteriorating.
Prime Holy stops Lewis.
doubt it. Holyfield's record should be 1-4 vs Lewis and Bowe, which tells enough of his problems with bigger men. And the '1' came vs an overweight, out of shape Bowe.lirva33 wrote:In fairness, the holyfield that bowe beat would have beaten lewis.viciousmaussa wrote:er, Lewis beat Mercer by at least a couple of points. and he handled that guy that ppl like to pretend is the best heavyweight of his generation, Holyfield a couple of times. and he tore that guy's face apart who was supposed to be the heir apparent of the heavyweight division - despite being in some of the worst shape of his career

Evander was at his most highly regarded post Tyson, which is the one Lewis dominated to a draw and then clearly outboxed in a rematch. The Evander who struggled with Holmes, and fought Bowe's fight, couldn't beat prime Lewis. Lewis is just too good from a distance.
Like I say, if Holy wanted to be the best he should've beaten Lewis. He did his best to put that fight off, tried to make fights vs Akinwande AND Both - just long enough for ppl to say he was past it
it's even difficult finding when the best Holyfield was. the '88 version who beat Dokes? the unconvinving 1990-92 champion, who lost his belt after the first major test? the guy who lost his newly acquired title straight away in '93? the more mature, intelligent harder punching but slower '96-'00 version?
either way, Lewis only lost when he was smashed with a couple of humongous right hands. Evander didn't hit as hard as McCall or Rahman

Merchant's comment is utter bollocks, how many shit nights did Ali have in his career? Answer, plenty. Even great fighters have off nights.Tantum wrote:harrygreb wrote:the yanks are still sore over lewis being the premier heavy over the last 10 years and kicking alot of US butt in the process. just like they will be sore about Calzaghe for years. expect alot of flack to land on ricky hatton when he busts a few more of 'em up.

Please read my above comment....it would appear that great fighters think alike.
Christ, Ali was getting his ass whooped by 37 year old Floyd Patterson before the fight was stopped (somewhat spuriously) on swellings. It was clear Ali hadn't bothered to train properly because he was the one who looked like the old man in there that night, not patterson.

good pronunciation?Terence wrote:I know some see it as jokey banter but Merchant has form on this type of thing. He is a complete gonad and a sore loser. When his "Golden Boy" the next "Ray Robinson" Shane Mosley got battered by Forrest what did Larry say to the victor? "Just because you beat Tiger Wods doesn't mean you are Tiger Woods!" Forrest, class guy that he is, smiled and shook his head then said: "C'mon man I beat your boy (or similar words)." He also used to have a running spat with James Toney when Toney was on HBO and would lecture him constantly. I get the impression that Merchant does not like prize fighters and sees them as beneath him; he is a silly old wannabe intellectual, if fighters mixed-up their punches the way he mixes up his quotes/other people's metaphors then they'd be all lying on their backs after a round. Larry picked Wlad as the most naturally gifted and #1 heavyweight WHILST Lewis was still active (almost immediately after Tyson fight) based on a win over Mercer. Lennox is a legendary athlete, Merchant a guy with good proununciation and a mic, those who cannot commentate/criticise and it just puts a hair across their arse to see others do what they cannot do.
I watch a lot of old fights and it is a real shame that these commentators don't as the older Mic guys used to wait for up to 30secs and then describe a relevant blow, now if nothing is happening for 30secs you get: "Nothing is happening here, why?" If a fighter is trying to figure his guy out on the jab you get: "He is putting his jab out figuring his guy out. I saw Audley Harrison the other day, he is a big man but he's out of shape, whoops someone just got KO'd! What happened there then?" or you get a semi-lull and all you get off Ed Robinson is: "I saw Ricky Hatton having a cup of tea the other day, Jim explain!" It is diabolical, we are all capable of working it out for ourselves if we are given a moment to think about what is going on.
how many times has Merchant pronounced "Coup de grace" wrong
a lot of today's commentators are a bit condescending, a bit too much in that information overload kind of way. mostly in America. i really find it diffcult to listen to Lampley and Bob 'Babble' Sheridan - no wonder the latter had a heart attack; he always seems to be hyperventilating.Terence wrote:I know some see it as jokey banter but Merchant has form on this type of thing. I prefer an unobtrusive commentator, like Reg Gutteridge was or Ian Darke. I don't know if it's only me, but German commentators, even though I can't tell what they're saying, always sound like they're sampling some kind of tasty delicacy, like they've been misplaced from the set of masterchef. I was watching an old Michalczewski fight, and every time he scores a good jab it's like "hmmmm", "hmmmm hmmmm". Danish commentators sometimes seem a bit eccentric, when Kessler beat Siaca the guy says, in English "MIKKEL KESSLER IS fornicating CHAMPION OF THE WORLD!!"

There is a lot to be said for the old school of sports commentating.
I have fond recollections of people who actually assumed some level of intelligence in their audience. People like Dan Maskell, John Arlott, Reg Gutteridge and the like. On the radio, people like Peter Jones doing the football ( who obviously had to be more descriptive )
The did not waste time saying " he's hit the ball ' or whatever when it was frickin' obvious that's what had happened.
Now, I suspect, the commentators are trying to describe what is going on to a younger generation with the attention span of a gnat and who are probably flipping channels between the fights and MTV Base
As for Merchant, he is a different case. he is just a tosser

Far too much is made of the 'holyfield was past it,tyson was past it when they fought lewis' Yet these 3 guys are practically the same age! maybe, just maybe lennox was slightly past it when he fought these two?
No doubt you guys will jump down my throat, but this is something we will never know.for me,lewis beats holyfield 9 times out of 10 in both their primes.
