8th round of Jezzamundo's dream heavyweight tournament

Post by jezzamundo »

Results from the 7th round are:

Ali MD12 Louis
Holmes TKO11 Tyson
Foreman TKO4 Frazier
Lewis MD12 Marciano

So the points table reads:

1. Louis 17 points
2. Ali 11 points
3. Holmes 7 points
4. Foreman 3 points
5. Lewis -5 points
6. Marciano -7 points
7. Frazier -11 points
8. Tyson -15 points

The next round of fights are:

Ali vs Tyson II (Ali won first fight TKO10)
Louis vs Lewis II (Louis won first fight KO9)
Holmes vs Frazier II (Holmes won first fight MD12)
Foreman vs Marciano II (Foreman won first fight KO4)

Remember, this is a premier league style event and not a knockout competition. Once all fighters have fought each other twice the tournament is over and the fighter with the most points is the ultimate champion! Fights are 12 rounds, not 15, and fighters use 10 ounce gloves (not that I think that would make a real difference to any of the fights). For those who didn't read the first topic, these are 7 of my top 8 all-time heavies, I rate Tyson 12th from memory, but I found him just too interesting a fighter to leave out. The points system is as such:
KO win = 3 points
Decision win = 1 point
Draw = 0
Decision loss = -1 point
KO loss = -3 points

NEW AND IMPROVED POINTS SYSTEM
Due to the unfair advatage the above scoring system gives to KO's, I have devised a new points system, where every fight is worth 100 points, and split between the fighters in the below method:
KO win = 100 points
TKO win = 100 points
UD win = 90 points
MD win = 75 points
SD win = 60 points
Draw = 50 points
SD loss = 40 points
MD loss = 25 points
UD loss = 10 points
TKO loss = 0 points
KO loss = 0 points

So the new table reads:

1. Ali 635 points (7-0-0, 2 ko)
2. Louis 625 points (6-1-0, 6 ko)
3. Holmes 475 points (5-2-0, 3 ko)
4. Foreman 400 points (4-3-0, 4 ko)
5. Lewis 260 points (3-4-0, 1 ko)
6. Marciano 185 points (1-6-0, 1 ko)
7. Frazier 120 points (1-6-0, 0 ko)
8. Tyson 100 points (1-6-0, 1 ko)

Please let me know what you think of this new scoring system. You will notice that the only change in the ladder is that Ali goes ahead of Louis, which I think is only fair seeing as he is undefeated, and beat Louis in their fight).

foreman REMATCH VS MARCIANO? o this is an
confident pick for me....

marciano TKO 8 foreman- you guys realize how good marciano was at rematches? u realize thats all marciano needs to do is plan to survive the first 5 rounds unlike the last time, and he wins. goldman will prepare rocky well this time. foreman will understimate the rock. few fighters could beat rocky marciano in a rematch, and george foreman is not one of them. foreman wins the first fight by KO, 2nd one goes to the rock

joe louis was another who was incredible in rematches........

rematch joe louis KO 1 lennox lewis

rematch holmes 15 split frazier, frazier seemed to get worn out from the first match and didnt do well in rematches

ali 15 unanimous mike tyson- i dont know how tyson will react to rematches though. he reacted well vs ruddock.

Ali WUD12 Tyson (a very lopsided decision, Tyson gets frustrated)

Louis WUD12 Lewis (Lennox is more cautious after getting KO'd last time. Joe scores a late KD to win a close but comfortable decision.)

Frazier WSD 12 Holmes ( Frazier outworks Larry and snatches a disputed decision)

Marciano KO 11 Foreman (George is a bit too casual after the first blow out)

very good picks. i especially like the way u said "lennox is much more cautious."

ezzard, u and i are the only one who used "how fighters do in rematches" as one of the criterias

Ali KO5 Tyson (Tyson gets frustrated and stays down when he really could get up after being thoroughly beaten in the first four rounds)
Lewis UD12 Louis (Close fight, but Lewis is very defensive and hard to hit, and outlands Louis with his jab as well as knocking Louis down early. Louis comes back and wins most of the last few rounds as Lewis tires, would have won had it been 15 rounds.)
Holmes UD12 Frazier (Frazier close to being stopped near the end)
Marciano SD12 Foreman (Rocky does much better than in the first fight, taking over through the final rounds and knocking George down, but George does a lot of damage early on by landing several huge uppercuts and landing throughout the fight with his jab.)

I'm not changing my pick since we're going prime vs prime, but I think the absolute most entertaining matchup would be prime Ali vs post 1996 Tyson. That one is a definite DQ win for Ali, after Iron Mike completely snaps and has to be pepper sprayed, tasered and handcuffed, and that's just at the weigh in.

Yep. Just because Joe Louis had a good track record in rematches doesn't mean he'd beat anyone in a rematch that beat him before. Lewis starches Joe again in my book.

Lennox also has an unblemished record in rematches also, if you noticed.

I picked Lewis also, but by UD. I see him knocking Louis down, and possibly out, but seeing as Joe was good at getting off the mat I give him the benefit of the doubt. I had Joe winning the 1st by KO, but I see a cautious Lewis not taking many shots in the rematch. Also, I think that very vunerable is a huge overstatement of Lewis's chin, which I do not rate that far behind Joe's. Both men definitely have the power to knock each other down, although Joe would be the more likely to get back up.
