Dana White elaborates on potential UFC move into boxing: ‘Why not give it a shot?’

Dana White wasn’t kidding around when he said the UFC could one day bring boxing under its umbrella.

Asked about the seriousness of his comments regarding the UFC potentially branching out into boxing in a full-time capacity, on the heels of the record-setting co-promoted boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, White indicated Tuesday on The Jim Rome Podcast that he was extremely interested in the idea. White said he believes the UFC could became a major player in the boxing space in the same way it has in MMA.

“I just know how good we are at what we do, and I know we’re better than pretty much everybody else out there,” White said. “I think that the guys who are involved in boxing, the fighters, would enjoy being under this umbrella and fighting for us, and yeah, I do think would could do it better than everybody else does. So what the hell, why not give it a shot?”

White went on to say that he “100 percent” believes professional boxers would be better served competing under a UFC boxing banner rather than with veteran promoters such as Top Rank or Golden Boy Promotions, citing the UFC’s track record in combat sports as a whole and the recent creation of the UFC Performance Institute.

“We’re the best,” White said. “We’re the best at what we do. We think about the future. If you look at this facility that we’re in now (the UFC Performance Institute), a state-of-the-art facility with every piece of equipment you can think about as far as recovery, getting stronger. We have a restaurant here that they eat at everyday for free, costs nothing for the fighters to come here and do all this stuff. Plus, we have a physical therapy center where all the fighters can come in and get physical therapy for free.

“On top of, I think we do our events better than they do, our production is better than the production that’s out there. I think everything in this business that you could possibly do, we do better, and we have health insurance for our fighters.”

White’s comments Tuesday came on the heels of the latest chapter in the long-running feud between himself and Top Rank CEO and founder Bob Arum.

In a recent interview with NYFights, Arum called White’s interest in promoting boxing a move of “desperation,” pointing to the UFC’s struggling year in pay-per-view sales and increasing reliance on big stars to drive major revenue. Arum said that White was “the spokesperson for what could be a failing business.”

Not surprisingly, White didn’t mince words in his response.

“F*ck him. F*ck that guy,” White said regarding Arum.

“This is the same guy who said the same sh*t 15 years ago about me and the Fertittas. He said, ‘They’re losing oodles and oodles of money.’ I don’t even know what the f*ck ‘oodles and oodles’ means, but we’re losing oodles and oodles of money and this business was a joke, it was going to go under, nobody will ever be into a sport like this. And here we are today. I mean, this guy is such a jerkoff. Literally the biggest piece of sh*t in all of sports, Bob Arum, ladies and gentlemen.”

Notably, White isn’t the only big UFC name to mention a potential future in boxing.

McGregor, speaking Tuesday with Ireland’s entertainment.ie, also teased that further pugilistic matches could rest on his horizons. McGregor explained that a UFC lightweight title unification bout against Tony Ferguson is likely his next step, but the Irishman still left the door open for a return to the ring. And when asked about the possibility of McGregor ever making his boxing comeback, White’s answer was telling.

“Never say never,” he said.

Thoughts?

Why not??? ... Boxing promoters like Bob Arum, Don King, Oscar De La Hoya, and Lou DiBella are ALL such pieces of shiit that I would much rather do business with Dana White -- because at least he's honest with people about what the numbers are and doesn't try to put something over on them.. If you keep screaming at a guy that you want a certain fight -- they should be trying to put that fight together for you instead of shoving crap fights at you in a misguided effort to keep you undefeated.. Why did Mayweather buy out his contract from Arum??? ... They both would have made tons if Arum was an honest man about how much money was coming in.

Eddie Hearn is not bad... But Arum, King, De La Hoya, and DiBella will all lie to you... Very few Boxing promoters have ever been honest.

On paper it sounds like a good idea, the UFC promoting Boxing matches anyway. Putting the idea into practise is another thing all together though.

For an MMA company like the UFC who have controlled their own titles and ranking throughout their history as well as having fighters exclusively compete for them, to suddenly switch to promoting a sport like boxing where the boxers can potentially leave their contracts at any time with the right offer coming along would be no easy thing.
Fight agreements, licensing, medical examination requirements would all be similar and probably held to a higher standard, but at the same time a sanctioning body would need to be involved more in their business which I don't think Dana would be overly happy with.

Having a organisation like the WBC, WBA etc. would cause friction with the UFC top brass and that's before you even think about national bodies such as the NABF and BBB of C, just to give an example.
Co-promoting with another promotion would be likely but to go into the boxing business for themselves is just something I don't think will happen due to having such reduced control of both the boxers and the sanctioning of title fights.

I think the UFC would make their own boxing belts if it becomes a problem dealing with the sanctioning bodies. They would have their own boxing champions just like the UFC does for its MMA champions.

It will be right around a million or so. They aren't having a hard time at all. I just saw yesterday the company is estimated to be worth 5 billion now. Good numbers isn't just the numbers of your biggest star, it's turning a profit and they always do.

I'd be curious to see how it goes. Would it be UFC guys boxing. Would it be UFC guys VS boxers? Would it just a straight up Boxing promotion seperate from the UFC fighters altogether?

I'd watch to find out.

Tomorrow night's card is so worth the money.

I've been waiting for TJ/Cody for quite some time now.

I did feel that Boxing may have let in a monster when they allowed Dana White to get his first taste of Boxing's Big Top Event with Floyd and Conor's fight. Boxing has been a cottage industry for so many years operating in the dingy corners of entertainment without the laws and rules that govern most sports. Could you imagine what Dana White could do with half of the stable of boxers that Hayman has? All he needs actually is enough to sponsor one weight class worth of contenders to give fans a taste...then I think the UFC could take over boxing. I really do.

Does anyone remember The Contender Series? It showed that you don't really have to have to top talent to create interest. It's all how it's presented I think and no one presents better than the UFC. Tonight's UFC numbers will show Uncle Bob how dumb his recent comments were because that card is absolutely stacked with great fights.

The Muhammad Ali Expansion Act is the main reason why boxers earn far more than their MMA counterparts.

The UFC have spent a fortune trying to prevent the Acts' expansion into the MMA, because the aim of this legislation is to protect the rights of fighters.

The UFC currently decides who fights and who doesn't. They also have complete control over their rankings. And in general, they pay their fighters far smaller purses than boxers typically receive.

Those that compete under the UFC banner are perceived as commodities, independent contractors who must pay for the entirety of their expenses out of their own pocket, but in reality these fighters are employees, due to the exclusive nature of their contracts (as in being locked to that promotion).

MMA fighters are underpaid and don't have any control over their career. The UFC are strongly opposed to allowing this situation to change... and I feel that boxers will actively refrain from doing business with that promotion unless they change their business practices.

When the Muhammad Ali Expansion Act is inevitably expanded to cover MMA also, then we might be given an opportunity to see if the UFC's business model is capable of being commercially successful in an environment where they not only lose a lot of their control, but they are also obliged to pay their fighter's their economic worth.

If the UFC continues to remain successful under this new legislation, then they might be capable of gaining success in the boxing arena also, but I personally have my doubts.

Arum plays the monetary game as all scum educated Americans do.
Many of his statements are slander/libel (whatever the talking one is).

The best part is where he consistently calls others out for doing the things he does.
Who else pushed their stars while sacrificing the rest of his clients the way he did?

Whatever, Arum got a few paid idiots here claiming Top Rank is great for boxing.

All promoters are out to make the most for themselves.
None of them care about the fans, the fighters or the sport.
It's only about lining their own pockets
