Kownacki vs Washington in talks for january

Post by dagilechia »

nice fight to compare Kownacki with Miller
i expect Kownacki to be in great shape as first he goes to sparring with Adamek before his Kassi fight, then he goes to Russia to spar Povetkin before his Hammer fight

Solid match-up. Kownacki has not yet proven that he's too good to be sharing the ring with Washington. If this goes as expected (Kownacki victory), then people will start to seriously doubt that Washington is even in the top 35, meanwhile there will be increasing evidence to believe that Kownacki is truly in the top 15.

How does beating someone outside the top 35 mean that you should be top 15?

Well, for one thing, he would get moved outside the top 35. He wouldn't start the fight outside the top 35. It's like magnets -- before they repelled each other, their position was closer. Then after they push each other apart, they're further apart.

Second, Kownacki is already ranked #10 in boxrec's computerized rankings, which not everybody agrees with. But if he added a clear win over Washington to his resume (which currently only contains a paltry win over Szpilka, which is even weaker than Washington), then it's certain that he would move up in both boxrec's computerized rankings as well as whatever subjective rankings people currently hold in their minds. So if he moves up, then wherever people currently have him (maybe some people have him at #10, maybe some people have him at #14, maybe some people have him at #18), it's likely that he will indeed move up enough to crack almost everybodies' top 15's. Especially if someone had Kownacki at like #18 pre-fight and had Washington at like #30 pre-fight; a clear win under those circumstances tends to move the #18 guy up by about 6-7 slots.

I like Kownaki, exciting fighter. Let's hope Washington brings it this time. He took his foot off the gas against Wilder, when he was doing well up until then, and he sort of quit even earlier against Miller.
IMO Kownaki is a top #15 HW. And I think he gives anyone in the top #5-#15 a decent fight. Time to step it up after Washington though..
