Buffer-time to stop?

Post by Southy1922 »

He has been poor this evening. Has announced quigg as a super bantam eliminator winner, then announced the chisora fight incorrectly. Poor for the fee.

Is he secretly john Macdonald?

I agree he's terrible but he redeems himself by acting like a complete lunatic. Really gets the crowds going to be fair.

Is he 73 or around there?
He has made other mistakes this year. The worst mistake was reading the judges card wrong. That is inexcusable. I know he has done mega title fights but it may be his time.
He is in it because he wants to be,.not for tr money. He made mega bucks after patenting his catch phrase. Read his Wiki entry. Amazing smart businessman. He can lease his catch phrase out if he wants to but the reason he does what he does is he loves boxing.

Wiki:
In 1982, Buffer began his career as a ring announcer. By 1983, he was announcing all boxing matches promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank on ESPN, which gave him a national identity at a time when ring announcers were strictly locally hired talent.[3] By 1984, Buffer developed the catchphrase "Let's get ready to rumble" in his announcing, which gained enormous popularity. He began the process of obtaining a federal trademark for the phrase in the 1980s, acquiring it in 1992. Consequently, Buffer has earned in excess of $400 million with the license for his trademark

The 400m number is a myth equivalent to the Loch Ness Monster. The article that first propogated it, also suggested Buffer gets paid up to 5m dollars for his nightly work - I suspect it was written as a joke/fake news.

OK. I did read he was paid mega to have him on a video game some years back. I'm sure he could retire comfortably but does it because he wants to, was kinda my point.

Hes getting put up in plush hotels, flights, food, clothes paid for. Stand there and announce a couple of fighters and sit back and enjoy the show. Hes his own boss. Nobody will talk down to him or disrespect him in ny way. Why wouldn't he want to do it?

I'll never forget that. Introduced Paul Smith as "Paul Reeeeaaaaaarrrgh" and then forgot to say Tony Dodson's name after going through his record.

I still think he's the best in the business. Jimmy Lennon Jr is good but I'd still prefer Buffer announcing. He's made a mistake or 2 in the last 12 months but everyone makes occasional mistakes.

MacDonald gets a lot of stick on here but I actually quite like him. I think Mark Burdis is the worst I've seen. He announces scores in a muddled strange way but most annoyingly he makes his first reference to the fight winner as 'from the blue/red corner'. I don't know about everyone else here but I never take any note during a fight as to which colour corner the fighters are fighting.

I remember as a teenager that I used to love Buffer and used to find Lennon Jr boring. These days, I’ve totally reversed my opinion - Lennon Jr is always professional and has a no nonsense style which I enjoy, whereas Buffer’s schtick is a novelty which has long since worn off and his litany of errors are extremely annoying.

More generally, now that I think about it, does anyone in the boxing business have a better job that Buffer or Lennon Jr? Those guys are living out a fantasy - ringside tickets to the biggest fights all around the world, very generous payoffs with all expenses paid, and only about 20 mins of actual work on any given night.

Bastards

If you had his job I bet you wouldn't make mistakes and you wouldn't even need to fuckin rehearse! He rehearses this stuff and still makes a Helen Hunt of it! No harm to the guy but his whole routine just doesn't do it for me anymore. Long gone are the days where I'd be sitting at daft o'clock in the morning half sleeping and Buffers LETS GET READY TO RUUUUUMBLE spiel would get me moist and ready to go again!

I think his gash during the Burns Mitchell fight sealed it for me! Rab Roy McGreeeegor! Oh fukk me side ways man!
