Orlando Salido vs. Miguel Roman Approved For WBC Interim-Belt

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

BS.com's Steve Kim first reported on Monday, that WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt had suffered a right hand injury that forced him to withdraw from a planned defense against Orlando Salido, which was scheduled to headline an HBO televised card in Las Vegas.

The President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, confirmed the injury to Berchelt.

"It's unfortunate, he has had a great year. This fight that was planned for December was a great closer [for 2017], he was a candidate for fighter of the year, but more important is the integrity and health of the boxer. Miguel should rest for the necessary period of time to help his recovery," said Sulaiman.

As reported, the promoters are now trying to make a rematch between Salido and former champion Francisco Vargas - who has been inactive since getting stopped in January by Berchelt (32-1, 28 KOs).

Vargas and Salido fought in a Fight of The Year battle in June of 2016 - which ended in a twelve round draw.

Sulaiman has no problem with the Vargas-Salido match and even says there is possibility of the WBC's interim-title being at stake. "It would be a spectacular rematch. We will see what the promoters put together and we will analyze it immediately," Sulaiman said.

Re: Orlando Salido vs. Miguel Roman Approved For WBC Interim-Belt

The World Boxing Council has officially approved the the vacant WBC interim-super featherweight title for the expected Mexican war between Orlando 'Siri' Salido vs. Miguel 'Micky' Roman. The fight is scheduled for December 9th in La Vegas.

However, there are a couple of things that are needed to make the stake of the interim-WBC belt official.

Unofficially it is known that the handlers of the full champion, current WBC kingpin Miguel Berchelt, are not so happy with the decision to stake an interim-title in that fight.

#Fernando Beltran, director of Zanfer Promociones, who handle Salido, says a title should certainly be at stake. The fight was originally slated to be Salido challenging Berchelt, but the champion is dealing with a hand injury and withdrew from the contest.

"Without a doubt, I would like it to be for the title," said Beltran to ESPN Deportes. "Some time ago Salido had asked us to go for the WBC title and this would be an ideal opportunity."

Mauricio Sulaiman, head of the WBC, said that his organization has approved the fight for the interim-title, and the event that one of the fighters takes a pass at that possibility, then appropriate measures will be taken with eliminators being ordered and both boxers would lose their status in the rankings
"They must go for an interim-title unless the fighters do not want to and if they do not want to then they lose their position within the WBC because the WBC has already accepted this contest as being for the interim title," Sulaiman said.

It is known, on the other hand, that HBO had scheduled that fight between Salido and Roman as a ten round contest, and for the moment the network has not given the green light to have Salido vs. Roman as a twelve round bout for the WBC interim-belt, although they are going to make a determination this same week.
