Ocampo Faces New Foe, Ponomarev Turns Back on IBF Eliminator

Mexican prospect and world ranked Carlos "Chema" Ocampo will risk his IBF welterweight world ranking when he faces Darío ¨Macizo¨ Ferman this Saturday in the stellar fight in the Gym ¨Rodrigo M. Quevedo¨ of the new boxing capital: Chihuahua, Mexico and Box Azteca will broadcast the fight throughout Mexico in another great promotion of Zanfer with the support of the Municipal Government of Chihuahua.

Ocampo (21-0, 12 KO's) was scheduled to face Russian contender Konstantin Ponomarev (32-0, 13 KO's) in a clash that would have been a final eliminator under the IBF to get a crack at current world champion Errol Spence.

But Ponomarev, for reasons not clear, refused to go forward with the fight.

I'm starting to not like Pomomarev.. fair enough he got injured before the Spence fight, also the fight was officially confirmed.. but here was a chance to see 2 undefeated contenders going at it.

It's seems as though Ponomarev wants no piece of Spence..

He's highly ranked with IBF.. i believe he is also ranked highly with WBO and he's signed with Top Rank..

well the wbo path certainly makes more sense for him as long as horn (with tr and vulnerable) is champ. i guess it would even make more sense for his side if crawford became champ because although hed lose to crawford and spence craw is with top rank and spence isnt.

pono actually had a decent run vs other prospects but he someone on his side is reluctant to take the next step up, where a win here wouldve taken him. shame because this was really well matched to.

Turning down a fight just because with no real reason behind it is the kinda thing that oughta get you blackballed from the sport. Hopefully it will. Pono who? F*ck this guy

pono is a fun fighter who was tested in somegood prospect fights but i get the sense he or someoneon his team doesnt fully believe in himself at the next level

I think Ocampo would have taken it.. but these are the types of fights we need.. pulling out for no reason.. I cant think he has sumat better lined up..

Apparently, Abel Sanchez was going to be working in the corner of Alex Saucedo on the same night in California.. thats the reason they pulled out. Because Abel wouldn't have worked his corner..

Ocampo can look scrappy at times but he is effective... That right hand was again his best weapon... He timed it in traffic and applied it with skill. He timed a beautiful counter uppercut for the first KD... Timed another right later for the same result. He just gave Ferman almost no respect going forward and going full offense.

It would've been greta to see the Ponomarev fight instead though.
