Yeh, we're making a big deal about it tbh.. It's a voluntary, he hasn't fought since January this year.. Has been out injured.. He is due his mandatory after this fight.
Boxrec rankings are by no means everything but this is, on their ranking system, the 55th best super middleweight in the world and the 27th best super featherweight getting world title shots.

We talk about a lack of depth at heavyweight. This, as per super middle, is a bigger mismatch than Joshua fighting Joey Abell, Kevin Johnson or Nathan Gorman next.

It's definitely a pathetic voluntary title defense on both parts.

How inactive are we talking here? DeGale has been out for ten months not ten years. He had a nine month gap before he fought Jack.

i dont care if its short notice or whatever its a poo fight. truax was a one round job for dirrell and hasnt beaten anyone.even ossie duran is too good for him to beat

now i get degale was in some grueling fights and has fought some top opponents, you can argue he deserves an easy night, but its still a poo fight that i have no intetest in watching. truax isnt even as good as periban.

Yeah fair enough but I can't help think it's due to fighting under a new promoter / channel. Nobody is trying to over sell or hype it as a massive fight. Just a chance to see some prospects like Dubois plus 2 world titlists have tune up fights before they fight decent opponents next year

If it goes well Selby an Frank, he can make fights between Warrington Selby an Frampton

I'm sure early next year well see degale in a decent fight if not, then we can complain. But after an injury, first fight on bt sports etc. I dont think we can complain too much at a poor opponent

Surely the first fight on a new channel should be a showcase - not against some total no hoper.

Warren was all about 'new era' this year. What have we had? Gervonta Davis - great name. After that? Absolutely rubbish opponents for Flanagan, and now the same if not worse for DeGale and Selby. It's genuinely crazy to think these opponents are world title level.

Degale must want an easy fight after struggling in his most recent fights

Degale wanted an easy fight and that’s what he’s
got. This is a non PPV card at the Copperbox - anybody who was expecting more is just being ridiculous

As pissed as I am that this card will be utterly sh!te, Degale has no choice, and as an extension, neither does Gilberto.

There's no real intriguing big fights out there at the minute apart from each other, and James would be an idiot to jump in with Ramirez after a long lay off. I doubt Ramirez and his camp would want Degale too. Benavidez seems to be tied up, as do Dirrell & Uzcatzgui. So both Ramirez & Degale have no option but to fight someone either unknown & crap, or unknown with some potential. Degale got the crap lad, Ramirez might have picked a tough opponent, I don't know because I've never seen him.

But there will be no excuses if they don't fight each other next year. They will be the only two top SMW's to be available, so just do the fight.

Are we really saying DeGale had no choice beyond the 55th best super middleweight in the world? Can we all just accept a 10 month lay off isn't a massive amount of time. A few comparisons; Pacquiao had eleven months off and fought Bradley. Mayweather twelve and fought Guerrero - Cotto twelve and fought Geale. Khan thirteen and fought Collazo.

So a ten month gap isn't really 'inactivity' and DeGale is still a world champion. The reason this opponent is so poor is because there was no willingness from a promotional POV to go after anyone decent.

Truax is an OK defence for DeGale after surgery and inactivity, Truax got destroyed in a round by Anthony Dirrell but apart from that he's usually pretty durable, it took Jacobs until the 12th to stop him and he went the distance with Jermain Taylor a few years back, unless DeGale can put Truax away early like Dirrell did then I reckon DeGale's gonna have a few tough spells especially if he allows his workrate to slow, I remember thinking DeGale would dominate Medina but he struggled that night and if Truax isn't showing signs of being shot then he'll have success

DeGale is by far the classier boxer though with bags of experience, I thought he just lost the Jack fight but Truax is at least a couple of levels below Jack and always loses when he steps up I see Degale winning a decision about 116-112

I'm in no way, shape or form trying to justify the match-making, as agree a better opponent could and should have been found, but I think it's a bit disingenuous in terms of those comparisons. DeGale was in an absolute war and required surgery afterwards, so you have to factor that in.
